Finally finished ALITM. So that’s done and eventually I’ll get River.
(Recovering from Covid has been great. :/)
Anyway, to my thoughts and opinions on things and this’ll probably be pretty scattered. So we’ve learned Maggottail, Snowtuft, and I think Houndleap(?) are all ShadowClan cats. Was terrified Sparrowfeather would die, gotta keep the only other she-cat in the DF alive. (Kinda hoping she’s a SkyClan cat since she doesn’t fit WindClan. But she’s probably another TC DF warrior.)
I also really liked Silverhawk’s reasoning for being in the DF since it wasn’t inherently selfish for himself, he was just tired of his kit being deputy and wanted them to succeed their leader already. And his mate’s all faded away.
With how everyone spoke, I expected Bristlefrost to die really late but she’s dead before Chapter 20, so that was surprising. As pleased as I am for offing the TC POV, so close to killing off my least favorite again. (Shadowsight)
Another thing that seemed a bit blown out of proportion from outside looking in, is Feathertail and Silverstream. I had expected both of them to be very nasty but nope. Just a few glares and I think Feathertail was more vocally upset than Silverstream. So I won’t chalk this as an out of character moment for either of them. It’s one thing to be watching over your mate/boyfriend with another person and being happy for them when you can’t do anything. It’s another knowing and actively living with the relationship in your face for eternity/till eventually you’re forgotten and faded away. So, I imagine the initial jealousy will potentially fade with time for both of the silver tabbies as they adjust. (Feathertail at least has somewhere else to hide out to get away from CrowXLeaf.)
Speaking of that, the drama I wanted: Mistystar and Blackclaw. I don’t care about relationships we’ve seen before, Mistystar was right there. We could have seen her kits again, her mom and dad, siblings, Blackclaw drama, Leopardstar, etc. But nope, disappointing.
Also really wish, Rootspring would have stopped sulking and interacted with Pebbleshine. I’m a sucker for grandparent grandchild moments and it was ignored.
I also do wish Gray Wing had been replaced by another founder as people who hadn’t read DOTC won’t know who he is, but the founders are easy to recognize.
(There isn’t even some level of description for Gray Wing’s significance, he’s just kinda there, like the reader is supposed to know who he is. At least Skystar is called SkyClan’s founder.)
I think Windstar or Thunderstar would have been a better replacement to clap back on Skystar’s desire for border rule being high up.
Also I may have been reading too much into it but it seemed like Skystar was one of the judges for Ashfur’s trial, which makes a lot of sense in hindsight.
Skystar: Yeah, he tried to kill some kids. We’ve all done that before but he’s atoned.
Gray Wing: Only you have had the desire to do that…
Skystar: I’m right, you’re wrong. I’m letting the speckled boy in.
Rushtooth seemed very eager to kill Redtail which makes me think he’s either had Redtail as an enemy or someone with Redtail’s appearance was important in his past.
I also really don’t like the re-ordering of the code. Since from Code of the Clans, they’re not in an order of importance. They’re in an order of creation which are two entirely different things. The honoring prey is just to stop kits from playing with fresh-kill and getting snatched by birds, it’s not of higher importance than another rule. It’s just in its place because that’s when it was created.
Also didn’t really care for the title stuff at the end, since it felt very unnecessary.
