And this is why I really think his manga should have been about his own leadership where we get to see what he was thinking at the time instead of just retreading Brokenstar's. All of this "so what was going on with him in TPB anyway" when they could well have shown that, and it would have been much more interesting. I always had the head canon that even with the knowledge of him only having one life kept secret his leadership was questioned and cats suspected that he wasn't truly endorsed by StarClan, and he feared now that his own precedent had shown the Clan could turn against a leader, his Clan would turn on him for losing the territory they had won through their own blood and sacrifice, even if he knew what Brokenstar did to WindClan was a horrible crime. I just think it's a very intriguing scenario that's realistic and has happened throughout history, where the usurping leader, no matter how honorably and justifiably they overthrew the previous leader, feels pressured to abandon their principles to escape the instability of the system that they themselves created.
And we could have had this for a manga instead of what we got, I'm still angry about that...

I definitely wished we could see his reign, but I am really happy with what we got. I always wondered why ShadowClan picked the elder Nightpelt for their new leader, there's no real explanation in TPB. The manga has pushed him up in my rankings by a mile.
I also think regarding the WindClan situation, the manga did show he was not so morally against them being driven out that he wouldn't hunt there, hes shown being happy about the prey it provides. I think he saw it more as an unfortunate past event he could do nothing about, and didn't really consider them coming back being an option. He saw it as a solution to the remaining three Clan's prey problem, and I think the whole "scheming with Crookedstar" thing was moreso them disbelieving that they could even find WindClan (maybe they scattered or don't want to), so they agreed to let ThunderClan go on a "crazy errand" whilst in the meantime enjoying the extra prey.

As I think ThunderClan pointed out, Nightstar had driven out so many ShadowClan warriors that they didn't really have a problem with being overpopulated and prey anymore, which Firestar used to basically think "well, he's just doing it because he's ShadowClan and ShadowClan cats are automatically evil" so he doesn't bother to find an explanation while he is curious about why RiverClan is doing it. But that is Firestar's bias there, most likely it was a political move. Throughout history people have been very unwilling to give up territory they have won in battle and sacrificed many of their own to gain, especially in this case where there are all of the parents whose young children had died for it, even if it is admittedly morally wrong. As well as cases throughout history where leaders who did try to "show weakness" and concede unjustly won gains ended up getting turned against and overthrown by their own people. So I interpret it as Nightstar, knowing he set a precedent that leaders could be overthrown and doesn't have the legitimacy of a normal leader, especially knowing that he only has one life, and cats thinking of him as weak due to his disability, feared (perhaps justifiably) that his Clan would turn against them and he wouldn't be able to hold them together if he conceded territory they had won.
