How old do you think barley is since he appeared in several books before into the wild including yellowfang’s secret I personally hc that he’s in his late teens early 20s but what do you guys think?

He's quite old, considering he was fully grown when he met Ravenpaw. My guess is fourteen to sixteen.
People joke about Mistystar's age, but I think Purdy also lived a super long time. He was described as elderly in Midnight, so I'm guessing that means he was at least eight years old when he met the Clan cats. He died about seven years later, putting his estimated age at about fifteen or older.

In Ravenpaw’s Farewell, he mentions that he’s two leafbares older than Ravenpaw, so however many years that is. Assuming that's accurate, and the events timeline on the wiki is as well, let's step through this (because I'm too unfocused to mentally log everything). Ravenpaw is one greenleaf before Firestar's birth. Leaf-bare starts the year. So, he's either 2 or 3 years depending on how you define "year before." The start of River puts us at year 13 after Firestar's birth according to the same listing. Therefore, Barley's either 15 or 16 years old. Worth noting is that, using the same resource, Mistystar was 14 when she died. All of that is based off of the wiki and this comment, so take it with a grain of salt. If there's a problem with this figure, anyone's free to correct me. |

In Ravenpaw’s Farewell, he mentions that he’s two leafbares older than Ravenpaw, so however many years that is. Ravenpaw was likely born in leaf-fall (as he seems to be a fairly new apprentice when Firepaw joins in newleaf). So two leaf-bares probably means about two years older. Although I think Barley is a victim of the inconsistent timeline. He shows up as a young cat in YS, however, Tigerclaw is still a kit or apprentice, which means there's no BloodClan yet for him to flee (if you go by Pinestar's Choice, Scourge isn't even born yet). In TPB he's described as a young tom. Ravenpaw described Barley as getting old in Ravenpaw's Path #3. So who really knows his age... EDIT: The YS timeline also means he is several years older than Mistystar. |

Not sure how old Barley was as the series began but considering him still being alive during Graystripe's Vow (both the Then/Now parts) and getting referred to as ancient by the narrative, I'm thinking he might be almost twenty in cat years. All I hope is that he died peacefully not long after Graystripe left or even when he died himself so that Barley can be together with Ravenpaw again.

I think tribbleofdoom's animations made me think Barley was middle aged in TPB initially, but in rereads I've noted that he's described as much younger albeit still an adult.
It would also line up with BloodClan's timeline. He was born when BloodClan was already clearly well established in Twolegplace. This means he's substantially younger than Scourge, and Scourge is younger than Tigerstar by about a couple moons, who himself isn't considered old in canon. Wiki says he's about 6.5 years at his time of death. TPB takes place in the span of roughly two years, and Ravenpaw is already at least 6 moons old in ITW - as Dustpelt's sibling, it's likely he's slightly older than Firestar and Graystripe. In Ravenpaw's Farewell its stated that Barley is "two leafbares older" than Ravenpaw.
All in all, that checks out to Barley being slightly over 2.5 years old in ITW. He would be approx 2 year younger than Mistystar, who herself is about 2 years younger than Tigerstar (Bluestar is pregnant with her when he's a young warrior). The wiki calculated that Mistystar is 15 years in old in ASC: River.
So in conclusion, Barley is probably around 13 years old as of A Starless Clan. Old, but not unheard of, and he has the more cushy life of a barn cat.
Edit: As for his appearance in YS, I'd have to just consider it as a continuity error as it completely contradicts an otherwise pretty consistent timeline. I'll headcanon it as another barn cat.
