I never understood how the writers could justify having a gathering where 2 leaders say “I have nothing to report” and then 2 give a one sentence update and then everyone goes home. It takes a while for the clans to walk to either Fourtrees or the island, yet sometimes they only stay for what seems like a minute or two. What’s the point? How can a month go by and you decide to say nothing and then just leave?

Bad execution but good for worldbuilding enthusiasts like me. The Warriors universe leaves a lot to be desired in writing but its a good blueprint to expand in my headcanons
I like to think of gatherings more like a cultural exchange where the news sharing is the closing event. The apprentices could have like games or small contests, the medicine cats could trade herbs or and have like a consultation thing for sick cats from other clans, there could be a storytelling sessions and mini marketplaces to trade trinkets like pretty rocks or feathers for nests

Thing is, I liked how the first arc handled gatherings. We got to see more of the cats interacting before the leaders speak, and you'd have medicine cats sharing info and elders talking together. It seems the books tend to skip right over that to get to the news sharing, unless there's a reason to show the cats interacting beforehand.

I still love all gathering scenes (lots of other fans think they are boring for some reason) but do miss the days when cats interacted for several pages with each other before and after the leaders shared news. Good times.

The elders thing specifically is specifically an off-handed mention in ITW that never actually materializes in any other book, or indeed even in ITW itself. It should be taken as an example of ITW's early writing being a little weird, like Yellowfang apparently planning to murder and eat Firepaw and the onomatopoeia interjections. ITW in many ways is a Warriors-prototype without a lot of the worldbuilding ironed out.

Massive agree, they feel like filler when they have so much potential for other characters to interact and stuff. Great world building but it’s starved for more dramatic moments

Yeah, it feels like the only time the idea of Gatherings really gets explored is when they're used as set dressing for some big plot reveal. Considering how much emphasis being chosen to go to a Gathering seems to carry, I'd like to see more characters making the most of the only real peaceful time they get to spend around other clans.

I agree, seeing more scenes of characters just hanging out at Gatherings would be pretty cool.
