Many fans hate Ashfur for hurting Squirrelflight. He threatened to hurt her family, and to tell the truth about the three. I like him as a villain, but that's about it, really. But I know some people really love Ashfur. Why is that?

He’s so…realistic, with his incel behavior and obsession over Squirrelflight. And I love how he adds mystery to the series, such as his subtle transformation from a loyal and brave cat to an evil loser, having to wait nearly an arc to learn that he was Hawkfrost’s accomplice and ofc the whole who is the imposter thing. His tactics are rather unique and secretive and he is fun to read about!
Ashfur allows us to see how emotional/psychological trauma can impact an individual. Ashfur’s story begins when he witnesses a traumatic event at a very young age, with the death of his mom, and I enjoy pondering whether that loosened a screw in his head early on and sent him on the trajectory toward moral decline and eventually evil, signs already showing not long after that event under Graystripe’s leadership, his arrogance and outspokenness being apparent. Then, seasons later, the possibility that losing Squirrelflight, the cat he claimed to care about the most, could have further acted as a catalyst towards his eventual madness makes him an even more interesting character. Then we have the fact that he lost Squirrelflight to Brambleclaw, the son of his mom’s murderer, another possible factor towards his madness. Then Squirrelflight and Bramblestar have kits, which may have made him even more jealous ten-fold; it’s fun to speculate if and how these many emotionally traumatic events impacted his psychology and mental state. But then died. Fortunately, the authors realized he had more to offer with his complex characterization. And his actions in TBC, during which the impact of his life events is fully apparent, only makes him more fun to study. I love analyzing and theorizing complex characters, and Ashfur allows me to do all that!

What Spinestar said. I may not like Ashfur as a cat, but man, he is a good and interesting character. There are two kinds of characters to like: ones that we agree with or relate to or just like because of their personality and actions, and ones that are complex and intriguing to think about and study, even if they're not good guys.

Pretty much what Spinestar said. I love complex characters and Ashfur is definitely complex. He is my favorite villain. Hopefully in his next life (I believe cats get reincarnated after they fade) he will finally find peace.
