If Bluestar’s relation to Whitestorm had been more mapped out prior to ADP, I imagine it’s likely she would have made Brightpaw a warrior alongside Cloudtail. (There is also the possibility she would have made Whitestorm deputy if not the Fire prophecy, I imagine. But that’s more side note.)
If Brightpaw was made a warrior with Cloudtail, then who else would have joined Swiftpaw on his mission? The only other apprentices were Thornpaw, Fernpaw, and Ashpaw. To keep with the male-female duo, Fernpaw’s the only choice here.
But considering his attitude in present day, I can see Thornpaw being a potential candidate here. Although I remember very little of his modern aggressive attitude as an apprentice. Although given he was the first apprentice, Firestar made a warrior… Claw may have been more suited. Likely the case would be the same with Swiftpaw dying and Thornpaw being mauled in this scenario. Unless they both end up dead, which would be highly interesting since there would be no injured apprentice to mention the whole, “Pack, Pack, Kill, Kill.”

If Fernpaw had been the one to go with Swiftpaw, I'm not sure that Dustpelt would have had the same positive effect on her regaining back confidence like Cloudtail did with Brightheart. So the possibilty of DustFern and thus their kits is also something to think about here. The other thing about Fernpaw's potential injuries is only a qestion though, if she was mauled and not killed like her companion in this scenario. Or perhaps roles were switched entirely and Swiftpaw is the one to somehow survive here. Ashpaw going with him instead might be yet another way this AU goes. Although he was not only Cloudtail's foster brother but aso implied to be close one book prior, him getting jealous over his brother being named a warrior could have influenced his decision. Despite the fact that neither Fernpaw nor Ashpaw were even old enough at the time to actually receive their warrior names anyways.
So Thornpaw really should have been the only other logical option.

Thornpaw was like the only logical option because Fernpaw and Ashpaw weren't even old enough to become warriors and I can remember that Thornpaw deliberately chose to not go because he thought it was too reckless and dangerous. I'm not sure if I remember correctly though.
