I really don't know where this belongs since there's no Misc. board so I chose here to post. I have some questions about the meaning of the characters' name meaning. Because I'm from Taiwan and read translated version (though I can also buy the original English versions), since an English word can have various of meanings, the translated version may misunderstand and translate the wrong meaning than the original one. Here are some samples I can think of, that our translation may not match the original English meanings. Name | Translation of meanings in Taiwanese books
| Possible alternate meanings in original English books
| Ash
| Remains after things burn out
| Ash tree
| Bark
| Dog barking
| Tree bark
| Fallow
| N/A
| N/A
| Mole
| An underground-living creature
| A nevus
| Sage
| Wise
| A plant species Salvia japonica
| Scourge
| A whip
| Disaster / Punishment
| Sorrel
| A plant as herb
| A red-brown color
|
For "fallow" I really don't know how to describe its translated meaning. "Fallow land is not planted with crops", but I don't think that's the meaning in Warriors. Would somebody discuss what do you think about the exact meaning of these names in the series? Please?

I believe 'fallow' is just mud or dirt.
Ash also could mean the remains of things after burning OR the tree! It can be a bit confusing. We don't even know if the character Ashfur is named after the tree or burned material! Sorrel also can mean both color and plant, so the cat can be named sorrel- for its fur or after the herb!
Also, mole- has the same meaning for us, a little rodent who lives underground!

If I looked up 'define fallow' on google, it says that fallow refers to a piece of uncultivated or plowed land, which could mean just some mud or dirt that has not been touched. This would probably be used by WindClan or RiverClan more commonly in the old territories, as they were near farmland and would probably know what this word meant. (In Crookedstar's promise, Fallowtail was a character in RiverClan.)

When you wait for soil to re-grow its nutrients, you don't plant stuff. You leave it "fallow".

I always thought Fallow referred to the deer- fallow deer. Good to know there's an alternative interpretation.

^Me too! Fallow deer are a pale colour, which means that Fallowtail could've had a pale tail.
