I have embarked on the journey to learn pixel art! My reason is that I'd like to code my own game and the classic strategy is to learn pixel art. So I'll just dump my stuff here! I am completely open to tips and critique as I am very new to this and any help is appreciated!
NOTE:
Currently all my 'artworks' (idk they don't feel like artworks haha) are VERY VERY small so I'm just posting screen shots of them zoomed in. But if I were to post it as they are... well... they are like 16x16 pixels so you wouldn't even be able to see them xD
For reference, I'm using Aseprite for everything, using other pixel artworks and real photos as references, and I'm just watching a bunch of youtube beginner tutorials. Having fun so far!
1. Mouse (31st Jan)
I tried to work a little with colour tones to help make it look less flat and pointy. Being a 16x16 canvas there isn't much room for detail but I do enjoy the simplistic look to it!
2. Armadillo (31st Jan)
Similar to the mouse really! Trying different colours and shades to make it feel more dimensional (especially since armadillos have that face armour). Pretty happy with how this turned out!
3. Cat (My OC Jackdawstar!) (31st Jan)
Gonna be honest and say I'm probably too proud of this. I have no idea what I was doing with the whole shading/soft edges scenario going on there but I'm happy with the general shape and structure, given it's my first cat! I actually did this one on a bigger canvas (40x33) but that's because I'm a rule-breaker xD Anyways, thankfully my OC has the simplest colour design and so that wasn't hard!
4. Cat (Attempt 1 and 2) (1st Feb)
So the first cat is attempt 1, second cat is attempt 2 which I did a few hours after 1 because the first one just didn't quite seem right to me. The head was too hunched and it just seemed off (also I did the colour too dark for the character I was recreating lol). I'm not too sure about the pose on this one but I wanted to do something that wasn't front-on. I used a reference for this one but tried to do some of the shading using my own understanding.
5. Mareep (2nd Feb)
Wanted to try and do something a little different! I think it turned out okay given the space is limited! I tried to make the woolly coat look 'fluffy' by adding some shading ^^

5. Duck Sprite (3rd Feb)
I wanted to make a sort of 'original' piece while keeping to 16x16. I was watching some videos about how a talent with pixel art is defining the right amount of detail necessary to get your idea across, which is exactly why you should start with small frames. I wanted to create a kind of 'sprite' similar to how Super Mario was originally a 16x16 sprite, or the original pokemon sprite was 16x16. So here is my little ducky! He is wearing a hat and a scarf and is sitting with his feet facing outwards. My main goal was to make it look like a duck with as little detail as possible xD I think I succeeded! He looks pretty duck-like to me.
6. Duck Spite (3rd Feb)
Same character but side-on this time. Definitely seeming less 'ducky' and more 'maybe duck, maybe chicken' lol, but I think that's just the nature of the animal.
