Something that kinda bothers me when talking about minor ships like BlossomThorn is how often it is stated that 'it came out of nowhere'. The reason this bothers me, is because it is a minor ship. These cats are background characters.
With that in mind, it is only reasonable they don't have fleshed out relationships. With BlossomThorn, there were a few hints in OotS, and 'suddenly' they were together, but that is not a bad thing (and don't mention the age gap, this thread is not about that). People like to say it is, but really, we are obviously not going to get a lot of scenes of these cats together. We are not going to get the same build-up BrambleSquirrel had in TNP, because those guys are main characters. It doesn't come out of nowhere. We just don't see a lot of it on screen. This would only be a problem if the relationship involved atleast one main character.

i think part of the reason it felt out of no where is because of the age gap. readers are more likely to expect background characters to get with former peers or otherwise cats closer to them in age, so it’s against expectation when a very young cat gets with a character most readers were expecting to join the elders soon.
doesn’t mean its a bad couple, or (as you said) they require build-up to be a legitimate pairing. although i think readers do appreciate hints regarding background character matches, even if they arent the focus.

Despite romance in the series being pretty big and really popular amongst the fandom, warriors honestly isn't very good at writing it, minor or major. I've recently reread the new prophecy because the first time i read these books i was maybe around eight years old, so i had little recollection of the books that wasn't otherwise "the clans move territories" and it was so difficult for me to gather the squirrel×bramble and crow×leaf romances, because neither of these pov characters ever thought affectionately about their love interests? brambleclaw never once thought admirably about squirrelpaw and the only impression I got that they were interested in one another was through stormfurs pov, which was.. upsetting? And when we moved to stormfurs perspective i immediately understood that he liked her, it was established and explained in the chapters, stormfur liked squirrelpaw because she was smart and confident, whereas brambleclaw always seemed to detest these qualities of squirrelpaw which i understand was supposed to propose an enemies to lovers romance but his annoyance with her was never really diluted. i only understood that the books were leaning toward a squirrel×bramble romance when stormfur would think about how unfair it was that he was being hypocritical of feathertail and crowpaw as well as him being upset that brambleclaw would be a better suitor for squirrelpaw, that he would be a better mate for her. he also references that squirrelpaw and brambleclaw sleep side by side at night. what makes the relationship fall flat in my opinion is that all of the evidence the books have for squirrelpaw and brambleclaw liking one another is delivered through an outside source, which is really strange. squirrelpaw and brambleclaw had no intimate or endearing thoughts about the other which made any chemistry they ideally should've had fizzle out.
crowfeather and leafpool were a lot more bizarre but it'd be such a huge paragraph to cover it all and i cant find the strength within me to write it all😭

The Romances in general in this series come out of the blue, or at least have the impression of such, despite being reinforced by the writers that their perfect for the other. As jujiaanne has already stated above. The romances in this series is poorly written most of the time, rarely are they shown as either suitor being affectionate or compassionate towards the other, or any other type of development or chemistry establishment. There’s hardly ever much build-up or explaining their feelings or how they began to feel them or how it deepened into an intimate connection, it’s usually a much more streamlined, abridged process that cuts out the entire “courting process” that’d make it feel more genuine, instead they just immediately transition from friends to Mates. But alas I’m certainly not here for the romance, would of quit ages ago if I was. I hardly even pay attention to shipping in Warriors. I could count on both hands the number of non-canon ships I’ll adamantly support. ThornclawxBlossom is out of nowhere since there actually is interaction between them, being fellow DF trainees, and being friends in general, with zero romantic implications ever given. And Victoria said Thornclaw was the type to never settle down and have a mate and Kit’s, which is why he’s never shown having any interest in one. As how it’s a bit of a “WTH” moment when He has one immediately afterwards in AVoS, since it essentially rewrites his character in some ways.
