Rainpaw
with [ Cedarfrost ] location [ the medicine cat den ]
Any other cat might not have caught the sweet, woody smell under the near-overwhelming scent of lavender in the den, but Rainpaw did, and that meant she was in trouble. Lying before her, taking her last breaths, was Dewspring - a once beautiful silver she-cat, and one of the elders. She struggled with contracting white-cough and green-cough whenever the diseases passed around camp, and her last bought of the more serious version had been just a few moons ago. Her lungs were never in good condition, after taking near-constant battering from the illnesses, but they hadn't been so terrible that she was close to death. No, Cedarfrost - the medicine cat of LynxClan and Rainpaw's mentor - had brought Dewspring to that point with the deathberries that Rainpaw smelled. Cedarfrost sat next to Dewspring, his head angled down toward her to watch her dying moments, but Rainpaw was certain that he had seen her. How could he not have?
"What...," she breathed before taking a gulp of air and trying to muster her courage, "what happened, Cedarfrost? What did you do? I may not be that far along in my training, but I can smell the deathberries!" Her words came out in a hushed, urgent whisper and she rushed forward to check on the elderly she-cat. She was rasping at that point, a death rattle close to sounding off in her chest. "Cedarfrost, we have to do something! We have to induce vomiting, or... I don't know! We have to do something!"

Cedarfrost accompanied by Rainpaw | medicine cat's den | ⭐ 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍-𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 Poor, poor Dewspring. Continuously ill with white cough and green cough, she never stood a chance in old age to make it this far. She had weak, frail lungs that wouldn't have lasted another season anyways. Cedarfrost knew that well yet Rainpaw did not. She would learn in good time, there was no doubt about that. He knew the smell in the den was horrific, that of demise and deathberries. Their scent was putrid although Cedarfrost had yet to notice it. In the meantime, he could hear his apprentice whispering and silently losing control of herself. And yet, he was silent as he watched Dewspring hold on to her last breaths. Soon, she would pass away naturally-- but with Rainpaw going in to a tizzy, he needed to control the situation. "Shh, Rainpaw. It will be okay," he meowed, doing his best to console her. "Dewspring had severe lung pain. She told me she couldn't breathe. I turned to grab her something to help with it... and before I knew it, she had shoved deathberries down her throat."
He looked at Rainpaw wistfully before his eyes fell back down to Dewspring. Poor she-cat, he thought. It's too bad, but it had to be done. She's in a better place now. "If we want to save her... which won't happen, we need yarrow to induce vomiting," he whispered. "Then, I will give her some willow bark to try and stop it. Unfortunately, she may be gone by then... but at least we tried, right, Rainpaw? We tried. Now, try to find the herbs, quickly."
He flicked his tail towards the herb storage, hoping that Rainpaw had the storage memorized by now. If she didn't, it wouldn't matter. Dewspring was well on her way to StarClan by now. He had more important things to worry about, especially Rainpaw. Hopefully she would shut her maw and ignore the unlucky death of the silver furred elder lying before them. image source - Unsplash & ImgBB

Rainpaw
with [ Cedarfrost ] location [ the medicine cat den ]
Rainpaw let out a small whimper of fright and despair as Cedarfrost attempted to calm her. She'd been his apprentice for nearly five moons now, but this was her first time seeing a cat pass into the paws of StarClan. LynxClan had been thriving in the recent moons, and few cats had gotten sick; those that did recovered well due to the amount of resources available to the clan in their plentiful leaf-green season. Now that they were all headed into leaf-fall, though, Rainpaw was scared of seeing the cats she cared about die. Dewspring seemed likely to be the first to go.
"I..." she started, unable to finish her sentence. Without saying anything further, Rainpaw scampered off to find the necessary herbs. She thought she had worked fast enough to get them, especially since she had memorized the storage system already, but by the time she returned, Dewspring's body was lifeless. Her flanks no longer rose and fell as she inhaled and exhaled. She was gone. "Cedarfrost, I'm sorry! I thought I had gotten the herbs quick enough! If I had just worked faster, Dewspring would have made it... I'm so sorry! Please don't tell Squallstar!"

Cedarfrost accompanied by Rainpaw | medicine cat's den | ⭐ 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍-𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 Cedarfrost's copper eyes bore into Dewspring's lifeless body. He had watched her breath turn shallow and her eyes shut swiftly as if she had no more strength left in her. He knew Rainpaw had no chance of grabbing the herbs in time. Not because she was bad at her job-- she was quite good at it, but because he had planned Dewspring's death well.
Leaf-fall would be difficult for LynxClan and he knew that. Not because of his actions, but because of the season itself. It would wear and tear them down, like it always did when living in the mountains. Death would follow the sicknesses that would be upon them. They would be ones he couldn't control. Ones that Rainpaw had no chance in helping with either. At least the first one was over. He sighed with a light tremble when he whipped around to hear and see Rainpaw with the herb. You're one lucky cat, Cedarfrost, he thought. She's clueless for now.
"Rainpaw!" he meowed with a sorrowful tone. "No, please, don't blame yourself. There was nothing we could do. She was too far gone... I don't think the herbs would have saved her. It would have only extended her life a bit more, but maybe... Maybe StarClan thought it was her time."
The ginger-brown tom glanced at Dewspring briefl before padding over to Rainpaw. He rested his sleek tail-tip on her shoulder, doing his best to comfort his apprentice. "I'm not going to tell her a thing. I promise you that, Rainpaw. My job, as your mentor, is to protect you," he whispered gingerly. "But we have to tell Squallstar together. Are you ready to go now?" image source - Unsplash & ImgBB

Rainpaw
with [ Cedarfrost ] location [ LynxClan camp ]
Rainpaw flattened her ears at the prospect of admitting what had happened to Squallstar. Granted, they were going to be hiding the full truth, but still. Rainpaw hadn't yet grown used to speaking with the leader of the clan on such casual terms. Throughout Rainpaw's kithood, Squallstar had seemed to be some huge, imposing, impenetrable, indominable figure (even though she was her aunt). Viewing her as anything else was hard for Rainpaw to accept.
"I..." she started off shakily. "I understand. I'm ready." Rainpaw gulped and nodded her head once in finality, before following Cedarfrost out of the den. Once out in the center of camp, the silver she-cat felt as if all eyes were firmly planted on her. Did the cats know what happened? Could they smell the death on her fur? Could they see the guilt on her eyes? It was all too much for Rainpaw, and she was about to turn tail and flee.

Cedarfrost accompanied by Rainpaw | lynxclan camp -> squallstar's den | ⭐ 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍-𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 Cedarfrost wasn't too anxious about lying to Squallstar. It would be done time and time again, so he knew it was something he needed to adjust to and quickly at that. If he didn't, he feared his plans would go awry. The medicine cat glanced at Rainpaw, glad to hear she was ready. However, he was skeptical of her response but there was nothing he could do about that now. "Good. Let's see if we can find Squallstar. I'm sure she will understand the situation," he responded before padding alongside Rainpaw.
The ginger-brown tom's eyes scanned the camp clearing carefully. There wasn't much activity right now besides some cats sitting outside the dens. It was a bit too early for the entire clan to roam about anyways. Cedarfrost hadn't spot Squallstar in the clearing, so he turned to Rainpaw slowly. "She must be in her den right now," he mewed, flicking his tail in the direction of the leader's den. "Follow me. Hopefully she's alone for this."
The medicine cat began leading the way to the leader's den, padding at an relaxed pace. He wasn't concerned about Dewspring's death. It was natural and it was here time to meet StarClan. There was nothing he or Rainpaw could do about it.
Once the pair reached Squallstar's den, the tom glanced at Rainpaw briefly. He touched his tail to her shoulder before allowing it to fall back and behind his hind legs. "Squallstar? Are you in your den?" he meowed, loud enough so the she-cat could hear. image source - Unsplash & ImgBB

Rainpaw
with [ Cedarfrost ] location [ LynxClan camp ]
Rainpaw felt like she was shrinking as she and Cedarfrost neared Squallstar's den. In fact, she almost was; in her anxiousness, she was hunching down and had her tail close to her body. To any cat looking at her, it would appear as if she was uncomfortable or morose... which she was. She was also terrified and timorous about confronting Squallstar with the news of Dewspring's death, and for two reasons: one, she had barely spoken to Squallstar, and two, she felt as if Dewspring's death was on her paws. It is, she thought with a barely audible whimper.
When she heard the silver leader's paw steps heading towards them, she almost turned tail and fled, but that would have made her look even more guilty. So, begrudgingly and with a horrible tremor, she stayed beside her mentor. "I'm here, Cedarfrost," Squallstar said in greeting. "Hello, Rainpaw. Why don't you two come in? I was just finishing up my meal."`

Cedarfrost accompanied by Rainpaw & Squallstar | leader's den | ⭐ 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍-𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 "Of course," Cedarfrost mewed diligently. "Come, Rainpaw. I don't think Squallstar will bite; she's your aunt after all."
The medicine cat padded into the den without a single thought. He wasn't worried about Squallstar as he saw her more of a lenient leader compared to those of the other clans. Plus, what would Squallstar do about Dewspring being dead? Beg her to be brought back from the dead which was entirely impossible? To him, there was no win for the LynxClan leader here. It was all his.
Once inside the den, Cedarfrost glanced around. It hadn't changed much since his last visit here which was a while ago. Not that it mattered, of course. Blinking, he looked to make sure Rainpaw was at his side. His apprentice wasn't going to get out of this, even if she wanted to. This was their news to bring to Squallstar. There wasn't much else they could do about it anyways. "Squallstar, Rainpaw and I wanted to bring forward some news," he meowed, gaze flickering to Rainpaw, then Squallstar. "It's about Dewspring."
He let silence hang in the den, waiting for a reaction and response from Squallstar. He was sure she wouldn't suspect a thing from him or Rainpaw. It was just a natural death. image source - Unsplash & ImgBB

Rainpaw
with [ Cedarfrost, Squallstar ] location [ LynxClan leader's den ]
Yes, Squallstar was her aunt, but she was also... well, she was Squallstar! She was the leader of one of the four clans, and she was formidable. She had watched her mother and father get into a few petty squabbles and even then she was formidable. So, it wasn't completely illogical of Rainpaw to be afraid of her aunt. She tried not to let it show too much, as Squallstar was acting quite warm to her, but her eyes were still wide and the fur on her shoulders was raised. The leader didn't seem to notice, though; she was too focused on Cedarfrost's words, tone, and expression.
"Oh, no," the silver leader murmured, immediately understanding what her medicine cat meant. "That is..." A saddened sigh escaped Squallstar and she hung her head low. "Dewspring was an excellent warrior and one of the best clanmates a cat could ask for. I hope she walks peacefully with StarClan now. She will be sorely missed." The leader's head remained low for a minute before she seemed to remember her niece was there, and then she fixed her green gaze on Rainpaw.
"Rainpaw, this must be rough for you. This is the first clanmate to pass since you became Cedarfrost's apprentice. How are you holding up?"
Rainpaw shook as Squallstar addressed her. "I... I- it's tough..." She didn't know what else she could say without incriminating herself, but Squallstar seemed to have bought it.
"I understand. And especially Dewspring..." She sighed again. "Well, Cedarfrost, would you take care of preparing her body and a few clanmates for her burial? Rainpaw, you can go off and spend time with Timberstep. You don't need to be a part of this process yet. Not this young."

Cedarfrost accompanied by Rainpaw & Squallstare | squallstar's den | ⭐ 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍-𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 "Her achievements as a warrior will not go unsaid. She deserves to be remembered properly," Cedarfrost mewed, holding his head low momentarily. He could remember enough about Dewspring although he had been an apprentice when she was already into her warrior years. "I hope that she is at peace while she walks with StarClan."
The medicine cat sat quietly as Rainpaw and Squallstar conversed, giving a sorrowful look when Rainpaw was asked about her first clanmate passing. He knew Rainpaw couldn't say much more than she had unless she wanted to risk her apprenticeship. He was lucky that his apprentice stuck to her word.
Blinking, the tom silently thanked Squallstar for sending Rainpaw away. It was best he prepare Dewspring for burial alone, without her around. "Squallstar's right, Rainpaw," he mewed, flicking his tail towards the leader. "Go off with Timberstep. Everything will be okay. I can take care of the next process on my own."
He thought about carrying Dewspring's body out into the clearing. He was strong, but definitely not strong enough to do it alone. He turned to Squallstar as the question lingered on his tongue. ""I have a question for you, Squallstar," he meowed, glancing at Rainpaw briefly as if it meant it was fine for her to leave the den. "It will only take a moment."

Rainpaw
with [ Cedarfrost, Squallstar ] location [ LynxClan camp ]
Rainpaw was more than glad to leave the leader's den, and so she practically turned tail and fled as soon as her aunt and mentor both gave her permission to. However, as she was leaving, she realized she had some misgivings about doing so - what if Squallstar and Cedarfrost were discussing her? What if Cedarfrost was going to tell their leader how it was Rainpaw's fault that Dewspring died? She realized - after a few moments of hesitating in the tunnel to and from the leader's den - that she had no control over the situation; it was in StarClan's paws now, and if she was recalled from being a medicine cat apprentice, there was nothing she could do to change that. So, with her head hanging low, she left the den and plodded off to find her father.
Squallstar watched as her young niece left and could see the tension she was carrying in her shoulders. This death was going to hit her hard; Squallstar would have to tell Timberstep to watch after her closely, as well as Cedarfrost. With a sigh, she faced the medicine cat once again with a pleasant but sad smile. "What is it, Cedarfrost?"

Cedarfrost accompanied by Squallstar | leader’s den | ⭐ 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍-𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 Noticing Squallstar’s sad smile, Cedarfrost offered a comforting one. He had planned out his next steps carefully in his head. Hopefully Rainpaw would spend enough time with her father that things would go uninterrupted. ”I will need some help moving Dewspring’s body once I finish preparing her for burial,” he began. ”May I borrow a warrior or two for that? I can help carry her, but not all on my own.”
Although the medicine cat wanted a specific warrior to help him out, he wasn’t going to mention Dreadsong. It felt wrong to begin with, seeing that she had a life as a warrior. She even had a family of her own. It wasn’t his right to ask for her specifically and it might even make him look suspicious. He didn’t need unnecessary attention drawn to him after Dewspring’s not-so-fortunate death.
Coming out of his daze, the ginger-brown tabby glanced at Squallstar. ”If all the warriors are busy and already doing their duties, it’s fine. I just wanted to ask,” he finally mewed. image source - Unsplash & ImgBB
