FENRIR AND ALISTAIR There was silence in the tunnel, for a time. The darkness seemed to hound their every step, shadows only chased away by the brilliant fire of Fenrirβs torch. He helped a few other members of the company light their own torches, but made sure to keep the number low. Theyβd need to preserve whatever supplies that had for a long time yet. βIt is an eight-hour hike to the first camp site,β he told the group. He stopped to glance about the company for a moment, before he nodded and continued on. The tunnel seemed to gradually slope down, bringing them deeper and deeper into the heart of the mountain. As far as he could tell, it was a least a two-week journey to the location where the dragons were supposedly seen. Once they reached that area, he had no idea what theyβd find. He was lost in his thoughts for a time, before Kaiva was suddenly next to him.
He eyed her out of the corner of his vision but said nothing immediately.
βIβm sorry your father was too ill to send us off,β she told him, keeping her voice soft. Fenrir stifled the urge to snort in response to that. Ill? Hardly. Instead, he only flicked his right wing in response. There was a strange rasp in her voice when she mentioned the king, but he ignored it, figuring she had her own reasons to be upset with the king. It didnβt matter β he wasnβt interested in her personal opinions right then. He was more concerned about the fact that she was being sort of nice, and wasnβt taking the time to needle him. Had he missed something? He glanced at her again. Was she ill, unlike the king? Before he could consider the matter further, she began speaking again.
βI had a dream once that I met a dragon,β she told him, chuckling slightly. Fenrirβs brow furrowed in confusion. She wanted to engage in small talk? Why? Didnβt she hate him? βIt was a rather strange dream, really. I was in a forest of massive weeping willows. And I happened upon him sleeping at the base of a tree. He was bigger than any creature Iβve seen in life, big enough that his back was higher than my head. And then I approached him, he opened one of his massive eyes. And he growled at me like a cornered wolf... I donβt remember what changed, such is the nature of dreams I suppose, but the last thing I remember is laying down on the grass and seeing his massive black wing enveloping me, like a sudden night descending. But somehow I knew I was safe. It was so vivid I swear I can see him to this day if I close my eyes.β
Fenrir inclined his head in response. βA strange dream indeed,β he told her. He had not had any of the dragon dreams himself, but he vaguely remembered his brother mentioning something about it. Alistair was a gentle soul, however; it was likely heβd read something about the dragons, and that had manifested itself in a dream. He had no answers as to Kaivaβs dream, but that seemed to be their very nature β beyond answer. βI dreamt of the dragons as a child as well.β He did not mention that his dreams of late had been full of nightmares β did not mention that he saw the fall of his kingdom and the death of those he considered friends and family each night in his sleep.
---
Back at the castle, Alistair prepared. He returned to his room to gather his things, pausing to add a few more potions to his stock. They would serve as light sources for a few hours once heated, and could be reused a few times before they become obsolete. Heβd have to use them sparingly before he caught up with Fenrir. His brother would be roaring mad, of course, and would demand that Alistair return home. There were many things that the younger prince deferred to his brother for, and many times that he had followed Fenrirβs orders. He would not follow Fenrirβs orders this time. Once he rechecked that he had everything, he went to the war room to wait.
The wait was agonizing, of course; he kept looking out the window to track the movement of the sun. Once two hours had finally passed, Alistair stood and gathered his things. He looked about the war room, studying the things heβd grown up with. This would perhaps be the last time heβd see any of these things. Still, Alistair could not bring himself to regret his decisions. His desire to keep Shayne safe, nor the dreams that had been haunting him of late, wouldnβt allow it.
He reached the passage, and was delighted to see that Kaiva had upheld her end of the deal. There was no one about, but Alistair imbibed his invisibility potion regardless. It would last for a few hours, perhaps until heβd caught up with Fenrir. He took one of his glow potions and held it over a torch until it was activated, and began to glow a soft blue color. He slipped the potion into his pocket, and pulled the hidden door open. The dark tunnel yawned before him, but there was no sign of Fenrir or the company. Theyβd have made some distance by now, so heβd have to set a swift pace to catch up. He stepped into the mountain, and pulled the door shut behind him.
He took out his glow potion, and held it in one hand. It was a strange sight β a glowing blue orb seemingly floating of its own accord.
Alistair started to whistle a merry tune, and set out after his brother.

KAIVA βA strange dream indeed,β said Fenrir. It was difficult to read his face in the shifting torchlight, but Kaiva sensed the sincerity in his tone of voice. There was no bitterness or annoyance, and for the first time she felt as though they understood each other.
βI dreamt of the dragons as a child as well,β he stated. This comment was not directed at her, but forward into the dark. She sensed a nostalgia in his tone, the weight of words left unsaid. He had more to say on the subject of dragons and dreams, that much she could tell. Perhaps a more reserved person would have left it at that. But Kaiva rarely left things unspoken, and she was genuinely curious about his answer. Even she knew that dreams gave great insight. What would Fenrirβs reveal about him?
βWhat do you dream of now?β she asked quietly, not wanting the others to overhear. She glanced over at him, studying the planes of his face. He was a mysterious man indeed. One who held his cards closely to his chest. She wondered again how he had changed from that gangly boy into the man that walked beside her now. She did not feel much different from how she had ever been, even as a child. Though she had grown (though not impressively, she would note), she was much the same. Feisty, outspoken to a fault, determined to create as much trouble for herself as humanly possible. Fenrir was the opposite as she remembered him. Though he had been boyish and awkward in their first encounter, there had been a fire in his eyes as well. They had fought like young lions still unaware of their growing claws. And when she beat him, he seethed with anger.
What fire had burned in him then had soothed or perhaps transformed altogether. Even when she had raged against him on the battlefield, he had handled her with ease. It was puzzling indeed. Perhaps the flame of his soul had eased into a slow-burning type of flame, the type that does not crack and dance but which burns hotter than any other, ready to burst to life if properly provoked. Or perhaps he was not fire at all. Perhaps he was water, cool and deep and dark.
βThese days I mostly dream of dying,β she said nonchalantly. Then, with a laugh, βNo matter how many times you burn to death, thereβs no getting used to it! Sometimes I sit up in bed feeling like my skin is on fββ
Her voice broke off. Something had sounded in the deep. She felt it vibrating under her feet as much as she heard it softly in her eyes, a quiet shaking of the earth. βWhat was that?β she asked softly. Only then did she take note of their surroundings. They had descended very far now, far enough that she could sense the immense weight of the mountains above them. The once smooth, sculpted walls of the staircase had opened up into an organic, twisting cavern.
βFenrir,β she whispered, βwhat awaits us down here?β

Orion
Orion's life had been relatively strange. Surprisingly, not much happened. Sure, there was a war, but not a lot happened to him and only him. Orion didn't like that feeling. The feeling of not being in the spotlight.
Was Orion constantly in the spotlight? Of course not. There were so many people around him that had achieved more than him. That's one of the reasons Orion liked the idea of going on a mission to hunt for dragons. Actual dragons!
"You sound like a five-year-old," That's what Orion's mother, or really anyone around him that had spent two minutes with him would say. Despite being nearly thirty now, Orion had the dreams of a little kid. Dreams of hunting dragons, slaying monsters, saving the world. Being a Soldier of Ash gave Orion hope that maybe one day, just one day, he could do all of that. He could slay monsters. He could hunt dragons. He, himself, could save the world.
Now, in the moment, Orion was heading down into the depths of the mountains to find a real dragon.
As Orion walked, straying a little behind the group, but not far enough to not see them or where they were going.
He kept his eyes on the blazing flame of his torch. The bright crimson flames flickered, radiating heat onto Orion's skin. Thanks to this torch, Orion could see. And what a nightmare it would be if Orion couldn't see while he was down here. As much as he hated to admit it, Orion didn't like the dark. You could even say he was scared of it. That sounded stupid. Someone his age being afraid of a little darkness. What a joke. Maybe that was what Orion was, a joke. Now he was taking it too far. Maybe he should just stop thinking about it.
Orion glanced around and saw Helkie. The olive-skinned woman was a blood donor. Orion figured that Helkie was there in case one of them... died. Orion cringed at the thought of death.
He strayed closer to Helkie, but wasn't sure whether to strike up a conversation or just keep moving.
He knew that surely talking to Helkie would be easier than talking to literally anyone else on the trip. All of nobility or higher power. Helkie, from what Orion knew, which, for the record, was very little, had a rather normal life compared to everyone else who was on the mission.
But still, Orion didn't start a conversation, rather, he just stayed within talking distance from the dark-haired blood donor. In the moment, Orion focused on the pattern of his footsteps as he walked farther and farther from the light of the sun. (Mmm short post, at least I wrote something lol. I have no clue how y'all make your posts align so tight together so this looks messy haha. I'll do something for Ivory later)

(So I reposted Maewen and I got everyone else up that is being used! Nelmia is complaining as usual XD) NelmiaThe ball had been more or less uneventful for the princess, of course she'd danced and drank, just had a good time but nothing exciting had happened. Outside of Kavia coming into the hall leaving a trail of water behind her. Though she hadn't had much time to think on it, not that she cared too much by that time she'd had a few two many glasses of wine. She'd retired early that night as well. She was not a morning person in the least so she removed her fancy clothing and slept.
When dawn came she was as grumpy as ever. Her hair was a mess, she'd fallen asleep in last night's makeup and it had taken her a bit to get ready. Wearing more basic clothing than before, her clothing consisted of black pants with a dark gray high-necked dress over the top, with sleeves that covered her arms and light leather armor over the top. Of course, everything looked high quality, sure they were going on some dragon mission where they'd be fighting but she had to look good still. Speaking of, her servants had tamed her hair down a bit, getting it into a few braids and pinning it up and out of her way. She made her way down to where they were meeting. It was dark and cold. Nelmia already hated it.
She followed along silently for the most part, really no one was talking, minus her brother and the phoenix he'd brought along. What was going on with them, last time she'd seen Kavia she'd hated her brother. He'd felt the same as well, she was always beating him after all. Hurt the poor things pride way too often, now here they were like they'd been friends that whole time. Fenrir hadn't mentioned her since then either really, so what the hell was going on with that? Her arms folded, she was pouting a little even, she and Fenrir had never really been that close, after all, she was kind of mean to him, but he'd always been the favorite so what else was she meant to do. She was never allowed to do the same things as him, until now at least, she'd had to beg father to let her go too. So here she was almost stomping down the tunnel arms folded across her chest with a small huff.
It was cold, it was dark, her brother was once again the perfect one and she'd tuned out most of the war meeting when he'd been talking. She did that a lot, maybe that was why they weren't close. Oh well. Nelmia sighed, this was going to be boring if no one but those two were talking, they were in a long tunnel so it didn't seem like they really needed to keep a look out right? Whatever she didn't want to talk to anyone anyway. She just wanted to prove that she was more than some stuck-up princess. Of course, that wasn't really what she was giving off right now, was it? She had wanted to go on this quest, fought to go even but she was making it look like she didn't want to be here.
ArasThe man perked up almost instantly when Isolabella thanked him, he flashed her a big grin. "No need to thank me. We are all getting through this war together." Aras nodded once. It was nice to hear her have a bit of a lighter tone, she was always so gloomy he'd noticed. Her distaste for plants made him laugh, "I do enjoy plants, honestly I like more more than people sometimes. They are boring and I think that is the fun of it. Give you something to focus on, believe it or not plants are great listeners. Even helps them grow." The man shrugged his shoulders. "They never judge you or say anything mean about what you tell them. Well I guess they don't ever say anything at all. But its peaceful, calming even to sit out in the sun with my plants." The man ate some more food, at the rate he was eating he'd be done in no time.
That was the magic of plants for him, they kept his hands busy and thus kept his mind busy. He didn't know what sort of home lives a lot of the people her had but he only had himself. Aras had almost always been on his own, he was one of many siblings but he'd gotten left behind during a raid on their village. He was maybe ten at the time but he'd made it out alive, his family gone and he had no idea where to look for them. So he'd left the village and plants had become his best friend, then when the time came he'd joined the military, it was the only thing he could do to pay the bills. Now here he was fighting a war he ddin't really care about, a concept he never understood, but at least there was nice people he could talk to.
MaewenNow the quickness to avoid Les' question was slightly concerning but she'd be fine, right? Either way, once she drank that potion it would be too late. Well, she seemed to have decent luck so what was the harm. Her brother's voice scolded her in her head, she should be more careful with her life. She shouldn't be so reckless, don't run into that group of Selvan soldiers. As usual, she paid him no mind and did as she saw fit. Plus, they wouldn't try to kill them, there weren't a whole lot of phoenixes so they wouldn't want to lose two right?
Regardless, here she went. She had watched as Les choked on the mixture, wonderful. Down it went. Her face instantly scrunched up as she held it in her mouth for a moment. She really didn't want to swallow it, the flavor was horrid. Tasted like herbs, metal, and acid. Maewen forced it down and shook her whole body after. The look of disgust remained on her face as she turned to Pelter. Another shiver went through her body, "You guys couldn't have made it taste any better?" The woman made another face, she could feel it, gross. "I know it probably isn't high on priorities but that was fowl, I'll be washing that taste out of my mouth for weeks." She looked at Les, "For that alone, we deserve a hot bath." The girl shivered once more, fighting the urge to move around any more than she needed to. After all, she didn't know if she'd be bursting into flames if she did. So careful was the plan at least till they got to the outer part of the camp. As reckless as she was she didn't want to take out the whole camp.
It was then that a familiar voice called out for her, and he sounded mad. She cringed again. Calar.
"MAEWEN!" He yelled as he came into the tent, uninvited. But he'd talked to some of the men outside and they'd told him where they'd seen her go. "Why didn't you tell me you were up again! I had to find out by finding you and the blanket missing you dense fool!" Calar paused when he noticed it was more than just her there. "Hello." He dipped his head a bit to all of them and continued to match right up to her. "I swear if you don't start listening when I-"
"Good to see you too brother just in time actually! We need someone to help set up more targets and make sure people don't bother us while we do a little experiment!" Maewen brought her arm around her brother, as best she could he was a large man, slapping him on the shoulder. Confusion ran across his face, "What you think we'd come to this tent for fun? We've got to test out some extending thing. What was it? Oh right some mixture to extend the use of our powers somehow." She grinned at the burly bearded man.
"Well wait now I didn't come t-"
"Great! You're on the team come on you big stuffed bear we've got testing to do!" Maewen shoved her brother out of the room they were in. "Well come on times wastin' I want to get this over with and get in a nice warm bath." With that, she was out the door, not that she knew where they were going. All she knew it outside had fresh air, and they were going out there anyway. After being drowned with the flavor and scent of herbs she was more excited for the bite of the frosty air than anything. Calar was grumbling about being roped into whatever this was, Maewen had a way of doing that to him. But it wasn't like he ever let her go alone, he could have left or said he was busy with something else, but he never did. [/quote]

Ivory Ivory had left the cabin a few hours ago, so much for relaxing, duty called. She was heading up in the mountains, trailing behind her fellow archaeologist, Keltius, along with a few others. Frost pierced Ivory, the archaeologist shivered and shook her head. She wasn't shaking her head at anything in particular. It was something she did when she was cold.
Walking up a cliff was tiring. Ivory dragged herself upwards. It was even harder to see due to the obscured surroundings. Everything was covered in snow and ice. Ivory was disconnected, not knowing what to do. The dark-haired woman found herself to be odd among her peers. Maybe it was her age. Keltius was a full ten years older than her, after all. It didn't mean Ivory didn't work hard, but she hadn't discovered anything groundbreaking that'd surprise the world, no no, not at all. Ivory found herself trailing behind everyone else. She could barely see Keltius in the blur of frost. She clutched onto the brown scarf that was blowing behind her, nearly falling off of her neck. Even with gloves on, her fingers still felt stiff and numb. Despite being raised in Selva her whole life, Ivory had never been one for snow or anything cold in general. She preferred the warmth of a blazing fire, burning bright red. There weren't seasons here, though, just winter, everlasting cold. Most of the people she had met in Selva were just as cold as the weather in their homeland. Ivory herself included. "It'd be nice to have some heat in this barren land for once," Ivory mumbled to herself with a low grumble. "I would kill for some warmth around here," She knew no one would hear her. That was fine. She didn't want anyone to listen to her. It was her way of getting her feelings out, just saying her thoughts out loud. Everything was quiet for a moment. She could hear Keltius speak. He had said something along the lines of "over here" or something like that. Ivory peered upwards towards the archaeologist, blocking the snow with her gloved hand. She quickened her pace, hoping to catch up with Keltius, maybe he had found something that could help them, and by them, she meant Selva as a whole. She slipped up on the iced rocks, nearly hurting herself. She managed to get a tight grip on the rocks before she managed to climb up, a few snowflakes pelting her face. At least it's not hailing. She thought, trying to keep her gloomy mood more positive.
Ivory heard Keltius exclaim softly. So soft she wasn't even sure if she had heard him right or if it was her own imagination. She dashed to where Keltius was standing, stopping a few lengths behind him.
"Keltius?" Ivory looked over at the man. "What's going on?" Ivory's heart pounded. She wasn't sure why this was making her anxious. It wasn't like Keltius had just found something that could kill them all, right? Ivory stood there in the cold, waiting for an answer. (How do you make your posts so neat ;-; this is just me rambling haha)
