KAIVA The palace was finally quiet. Even the court musicians had stumbled off to sleep somewhere. Members of the court were drunkenly draped about like baroque statues, wrapped in cloth and hair in disarray. Kaiva suppressed a smile when she passed them, tip-toeing so as not to wake anyone. By then she had changed back into clothes fit for travel (trousers, boots, a warm jacket).
The war room was shrouded in shadow when she arrived. Not a single torch was lit down the corridor where it was positioned, but she was thankful for the security of the dark. Hopefully none of the kingβs spies had seen her sneaking about the palace. It helped that she never once stepped foot in the room Fenrir had set aside for her. The king would have known where to look had she done so. Were she less mischievous minded, she likely would have risen that morning with a prison guard standing over her bed.
Thankfully no one was there when she arrived but the young prince. In the time before dawn came, they quietly discussed their plans.
In what felt like no time at all, the shadows lifted in the window outside, and a gray light faded in.
At the sound of footsteps in the hall, Kaiva and Alistair halted in their scheming. She glanced back at the door, unsure of who would pull it open. But it was Fenrir who stepped into the war room. There were questions in his eyes when they landed on his brother and the phoenix, but they did not reach his lips. Kaiva chewed on the inside of her cheek. He looked tired. Had his father told him about their eventual encounter? Perhaps that explained his silence. Perhaps he was angry with her for the second time.
Kaiva looked at Alistair from across the table, wishing they could speak plainly again. But their time had run out.
Soon the rest of the crew arrived. Bellinor, the ash collectors, blood givers, a few assorted men, and a new woman with healerβs garb. Kaiva raised an eyebrow when the ashen-haired girl greeted the princes. Clearly she knew them well. Shayne, her name was. She heard it first from Fenrirβs mouth, and Kaiva could not help the twinge of jealousy that flared in her chest. But she stifled it, knowing it was foolish.
βShall we?β she asked as soon as everyone was accounted for. She was as anxious to leave, not only to escape Rolnarβs grasp but also so she could execute the plan she had devised with Alistair. Just because they had discussed it did not mean it would go smoothly. In her experience, things often went awry in unexpected ways. Her primary objectives now were to hurry the group along, but also to linger near the back so she could leave the door to the tunnels unlatched.
Feeling impatient, she stood from her chair, slinging her pack over her shoulder. Syd gave her a significant look as if to say, Donβt be impertinent.

[ Aww you guys are lucky! My cat is a grumpy old man who only wants my attention when I'm busy. If I'm laying down on my phone he'll push it out of the way and get up in my face. [ Bell: just vibin' lol #blessed Rem: Kaiva is being set on fire Bell: This ain't about her ]
[ Show of hands, who here is surprised that Bell is the king of magical Australia? ]
-- Bellinor Listenoise >> Antaving
Sagremor had never seen the foreign king truly drunk- their life was lived on the battlefield and didn't allow for such indulgences. This didn't necessarily stop Bellinor from drinking, however. On one memorable occasion he had hastily finished an entire bottle of rum before beating an ambushing Selvan over the head with it. He also preferred the tastes to water, apparently, and Sagremor had learned to hide any and all liquor before meals. Truly, he was quite afraid of what or who such a bombastic person would become when intoxicated. His parents did not take to their copious amounts of wine well, and they were born bluebloods with years of etiquette classes dictating how they should act. The king is already impulsive and violent. Sagremor grew increasingly overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people who gravitated toward his Phoenix, however, so Bell eventually shooed him toward Kaiva. He wasn't very relieved at the prospect of interacting even with someone he knew- of. The brunet chose to remain in his phoenix's much larger shadow so that no one would pay him any mind.
He knew enough about his traveling companions through their interactions with Bell and that was good enough for him. But he received a surprisingly stern, "go play and make friends" Sagremor grumbled about being twenty-two not ten, but nervously approached the banquet table opposite the young Phoenix. He could at least get something to eat, and perhaps he could offer it up to the king in exchange for his continued protection. At the very least, Bell needs something to help balance the wine he's been aggressively sipping.
Sagremor was saved when Kaiva too had enough of the party and disappeared into a side corridor. He intended to return to Bellinor with a plate of food but found the king sweeping someone across the dance floor, so he hovered at the sidelines and awkwardly avoided any attempts to draw him out of hiding.
The Ash Collector hadn't been able to approach the king for quite some time after, and it was with faint anxiety that he finally approached the familiar ringing of bells amidst a gathering of colorful guests.
Well into a dangerous amount of liquor, if the empty wine glasses littering the nearby table are any indication, Bellinor reclines indolently on a chaise lounge and effortlessly captures the attention of all who hear his surprisingly even baritone. As Sagremor draws nearer, he learns that the king is regaling his audience with stories from his homeland. Listeneise is an island kingdom known for the sheer volume of magical creatures that plague it. Few people immigrate from such a place with the goal of finding a home in the battle-locked Selva or Traeterra, so he is an oddity and thus his tales are wonderfully exotic.
He is notably better at telling stories when drunk, as he tends to use a childish amount of onomatopoeia when recounting his quests to Sagremor while sober. 'It was like whoosh! You see? And I had to kerthunk it to slow the wings!' Was not very illuminating-
But here Bellinor's speech is laconic and his gestures elegant. Bar the time he had stolen someone's roast pheasant legs and held them to his face to illustrate just how large the fangs of his Cavernscrape Spider are. When inquired as to how he tamed such a beast, he took a dramatic sip of wine before speaking in the tone of one imparting vital wisdom;
"No creature, whether it be an eel, griffin, or monstrous spider, is immune to scritchies." The person idly braiding his hair nodded sagely- aren't they meant to be serving wine?!
"Remarkably, many beasts share the same weak spot; it doesn't take much effort to find." He tilts his head and raises his empty glass. A baron obligingly refills it and blushes when Bell thanks him with a smile.
"Muffin Lace is quite docile once I can reach behind her seventh eye," he continues, and without openly acknowledging Sagremor, moves his legs aside to give him space to sit. The Ash Collector startles when golden eyes flicker toward him. He finds a mischievous glint there, and draws closer if only to be in a better position to halt whatever nonsense is brewing.
Once he has finished sharing the best ways to love a spider into submission, Bellinor takes on a hushed tone. "In truth, I have forged an alliance with your royalty with the intention of continuing my research."
He thrives on the subsequent flurry of excited murmurs. "Irregardless of the degree of dragon in their blood, I wish to see whether or not this law of nature holds true~"
Sagremor shoots the nearby crown prince an anxious look-
~*~*~ Bellinor is surprisingly amongst the last people to arrive. Sagremor immediately goes to corner him, fussing over his damp disheveled hair and the puce stain on his cheek that requires a stern scrubbing to banish.
"You didn't bathe?!"
"I did! These lip stains are comprised of unnaturally strong dyes." He protested, smothering a yawn with his fist.
"Where were you? Whose clothes are you wearing?!"
"Ah." Bellinor pauses, "I am afraid that I do not know the answer to either of those questions." He is wearing his ostentatious coat and boots but his vest has been replaced by something pink and frilly. There are scorches in the striped pants he wears and...infuriatingly, all of his bells are accounted for.
"Where are your rank pins, at least?"
"I may have swallowed one, but the rest are-" He waves a hand. This is not an acceptable answer. Bell sees it in Sagremor's increasingly aggravated expression and rushes to reassure him. "I have spares!"
"This is a bad omen." The brunet mutters darkly, "you'll die in unfamiliar clothing and decay in a place that no one can find."
"Stop placing curses on me!" Bellinor laughs, discreetly moving away from a window to avoid the assault of sunlight on his aching eyes. Sagremor's assault is accepted readily. The king can cope with lack of sleep and hangover migraines but something about the sunlight and brightness in general is something even he finds difficult to stand.
He finds a suitable distraction in Kaiva's uncharacteristically shifty behavior. Sagremor chases after the king with a comb as he approaches her, a ready smile brightening his previously lax features. "How was your night, then~? I heard you were caught in a sudden storm~"
They don't have much more time to interact before Fenrir and another ashen-haired acquaintance of his enters the crowded room. Bell smiles at them both and earns a surprised look from his Ash Collector, who realizes that he's less effusive when recovering from a night of partying. The king catches his eye and pulls a face.

FENRIR Fenrir watched as the last members of the company wandered into the war room. Bellinor was last β and at the sight of him Fenrir raised a single eyebrow. The manβs attire wasβ¦ interesting, to say the least. Still, he did not say anything, choosing to turn and check through his belongings one last time. Once theyβd departed, there would be no turning back. Anything that was forgotten would be left behind. Fenrirβs hand brushed against a polished metal disc in his pack, and his fingers reflexively closed around it. He knew what it was without removing it. He exhaled, and forced his hand to relax, releasing the object. Heβd almost left it behind, but found that the thought of not having some piece of his mother, even if it was an old, faded portrait held within a locket, was too much to bear. Heβd stowed it away where it would be safe. Distantly, he heard Bellinor talking to Shayne. He heard her quip something about the foreign kingβs attire in her usual dry, sarcastic tone.
βShall we?β Kaiva said, and Fenrir blinked, his momentary reverie broken.
βIn a moment,β Fenrir replied. He flicked a glance to his brother, gaze questioning.
βThe king has taken ill, and regrets that he is unable to send you off with good tidings,β Alistair told his elder brother. He offered a slight brow. βHe sends me in his stead, and hopes that you will forgive any insult. He will be there to welcome you home.β
Fenrir inclined his head in response. His brow furrowed slightly, and his jaw clenched, but he had no other outward sign of distress at Alistiarβs words. Internally, however, he was roiling with pain and sorrow and anger. His father knew how dangerous this mission was β knew that everything Fenrir did, and would do, was to ensure the safety and prosperity of their kingdom and yetβ¦ and yet he could not even be bothered to wish his son a farewell. Taken ill? Hardly. More likely heβd had far too much drink last night, and didnβt feel like rousing this morn.
βIs everyone prepared?β he asked, although he already knew the answer. They would not have shown were they unprepared. Kaiva stood from her chair and shouldered her pack. Fenrir did the same, and gestured that everyone should follow him. He led the way to the secret entrance in silence, with the rest of his company trailing behind him. His brother, Alistair, walked alongside and slightly behind him, deferring to Fenrir as the Crown Prince. It was like a funeral procession, moving through the castle. Finally, they reached their destination. Fenrir stood before the door, silent.
It was an unassuming thing, for the most part; only someone who knew what they were looking for would be able to find it. There was barely any seam in the wall to denote any change in structure. Fenrir stepped forward, and pressed his right hand against one of the stones of the wall. He applied pressure, and the stone slid inward with a grinding sound. There was a series of clicking noises, before finally the door began to move. It pulled inward, and then moved aside, revealing a dark tunnel beyond. He turned to face the rest of his company. βBefore us lies the path that will take us into the heart of the mountain,β he began. βI do not know what we will find when we reach it, nor what else may be lurking in the shadows. There are far worse things than trolls in the deep places of the earth.β He met the gaze of each member in turn. βFor those who travel with me, no oath or bond is laid to go further than you wish.β
He turned, and grabbed a lit torch from the wall. When he moved towards the door, he glanced at his brother.
Alistair spread his wings slightly, and spoke so that his voice resonated with authority. βIn the name of King Rolnar, Lord and Sovereign of Traeterra, I bid thee farewell upon this journey. Hold to your purpose, my friends, and know that the blessings of this kingdom go with you. May the gods light your way.β
With that, Fenrir stepped into the tunnel, and was shortly swallowed by the darkness. Only the glow of his torch chased the shadows away. βLet us begin,β he said. βA long journey lay before us.β
He did not see as Alistair caught Kaivaβs eye; something brief passed between the two. The youngest prince watched as each member of the company, including both of his siblings, entered the darkness of the mountain.

KAIVA Kaiva stifled a laugh at Bellinorβs question. βA storm?β she asked, momentarily confused. And then she remembered it had been her excuse for her drowned-cat look from the previous night. In a quick attempt to cover her tracks she added, βAhh, yes. Darn weather. So unpredictable.β Then she shook her head, rolling her eyes in mock irritation. She would not yet tell him what had happened at the party. Frank as she normally was, even Kaiva knew some things were best kept secret.
They followed behind the procession of dragon hunters. Kaiva intentionally allowed everyone else to filter out of the room before she exited. Over the heads of the various soldiers, ash collectors, and blood donors, she could see Fenrir and Alistair up ahead. She wished to speak to be alone with both of them, each for entirely different reasons. But there was nothing to be done for the time being. First they must depart.
When they reached the door (which Kaiva could not see by nature of being short and at the back of the group), Fenrir gave his final words. βBefore us lies the path that will take us into the heart of the mountain. I do not know what we will find when we reach it, nor what else may be lurking in the shadows. There are far worse things than trolls in the deep places of the earth. For those who travel with me, no oath or bond is laid to go further than you wish.β
The group was still. For a moment there was no sound but for that of breathing, and the soft clinking of armor as bodies shifted restlessly. None among them would turn back. After all, he had chosen them in part for their bravery and their willingness to embark on such a mission despite its risk. At the back of the pack, Kaiva stood with her arms crossed and eyebrow cocked. She smiled at Fenrir when his gaze happened to skim past her, and then he was turning into the darkness.
One by one they stepped after him. Each figure was swallowed by black, vanishing down into the tunnel staircase. Alistair stood by the door to wish them well on the journey. When all had disappeared and it was Kaivaβs turn to take the plunge, she shot a significant glance toward the young prince. βGoodbye,β she whispered sarcastically, and she grabbed the edge of the door. The gray morning light of the castle disappeared as she pulled it nearly closed behind her. As instructed, she stopped pulling just before it would have latched, leaving it slightly ajar.
And then she followed the rest of the group down the stairs, features neutral (well, she did look somewhat mischievous, but that was nothing out of the ordinary for the Phoenix).
It took several seconds for her eyes to adjust to the darkness, and she nearly stumbled on the stairs. The scent on the air was distinctly cave-like: rocks, spring water, dust, and drafts. Up ahead, Fenrirβs torch was the only thing that lit their path into the depths of the mountains.
Kaiva decided it would be best to abandon her station at the back of the group. That way, when Alistair rejoined them and the hunt for his accomplices ensued, no one would remember her lurking suspiciously behind.
βPardon,β she murmured as she slipped past Syd, Bellinor, Nelmia, and a number of others whose name she did not know. A tall, dark-haired woman eyed her but did not protest as she slid by. Thankfully Kaiva was small, and she glided through the group like a trout swimming downstream. And then Kaiva reached the crowned prince, whose bright torch cast orange and red shadows all down the descending stairs.
βIβm sorry your father was too ill to send us off,β she said to him softly. The sentiment was genuine. She had seen the hurt in his eyes when Alistair announced the reason for his absence. She chewed on the inside of her cheek, trying to suppress her own urge to tell him more than he was prepared to hear. Thankfully his mind seemed to be on other things, and if he heard the rasp in her voice when she mentioned Rolnar, he did not show it.
She changed the subject, sensing it was a sore spot and not wanting to push him. βI had a dream once that I met a dragon,β she stated with a half-laugh. βIt was a rather strange dream, really. I was in a forest of massive weeping willows. And I happened upon him sleeping at the base of a tree. He was bigger than any creature Iβve seen in life, big enough that his back was higher than my head. And then I approached him, he opened one of his massive eyes. And he growled at me like a cornered wolf... I donβt remember what changed, such is the nature of dreams I suppose, but the last thing I remember is laying down on the grass and seeing his massive black wing enveloping me, like a sudden night descending. But somehow I knew I was safe. It was so vivid I swear I can see him to this day if I close my eyes.β
She paused sheepishly as she realized hers was the only voice that echoed down the long chamber. She glanced back at the dark-haired woman, knowing she had overheard her monologue. And then she looked back at Fenrir, wishing she could read his thoughts.

HELIKE As of late, Helikeβs life had been like the slow, repetitive turning of a wheel. She arose each morning in the palace barracks (which were mostly empty because of the war; only a few soldiers such as herself were stationed permanently in the capital). Then she had breakfast in the mess hall (the choices were either fried eggs and bacon or porridge and jam). Then she went about her tasks of the day, which mostly involved patrolling the battlements, trying not to doze off at her station in the kingβs throne-room, and joking around with the others of her station. It had been months since her services as a blood donor were even necessary. Only two phoenixes lived in the capital, and they behaved more as socialites than warriors. Sometimes she trained by sparring with the other soldiers. Or shooting arrows at the hay-stuffed dummies outside the stables. For the most part, she felt rather useless. It was necessary, of course, that some of those trained in combat remained in the capital to protect the royal family should there be an attack by the Selvans. But the warfront was far from the dragon city. At times, Helike envied her compatriots who spent their days fighting for their country. The wounded returned with outrageous stories of the ice storms created by the Selvan sorcerers or of the brutal sieges in the remaining fortresses. Other days, she was glad for the time she could spend reclining in a chair at the top of the barracks and breathing in the southern sun. She knew she was fortunate. That did not quite take the sting off the boredom of the daily routine and the guilt of not contributing. It was for this reason, her features perked up at the rumors of the crowned princeβs return to the capital. Word of Fenrirβs arrival spread through the barracks like wildfire. By the time she was off her morning shift in the throneroom, the men were tossing around phrases like βroyal hunting partyβ and βquest into the mountains.β By the afternoon, sheβd received orders from her captain to stand guard at the palace walls for the send-off party. Word was, Fenrir was assembling a crew to take into the tunnels. The purpose of the mission was difficult to uncover (some claimed it was related to selvan magic, others believed it was an eccentric goose-chase schemed up by the royal family). That night, she stood watch while the palace was alight with music and the bright colors of nobility. She could hear the revelry drift down to her quiet station beside the castle walls. The moon was the round face of a familiar friend, one who chose to keep her company rather than attend the party. But she was not alone for long. When the night was still young, she heard the sound of footsteps approaching. It was her captain, a pleasant man by the name of Jasson. He came to join her in the moonlight, leaning his back against the wall to mimic her posture. He was a friend of sorts, as all the soldiers at the capital were. βItβs a beautiful night,β he had said. She agreed with a low hum, and tipped her head back to look at the stars. βIβm not sure if youβre entirely happy here.β This time his words caught her off-guard, and she looked over at the captain, brow furrowed. She did not know how to respond. It seemed like a loaded statement, but it was said in a conversational tone. Sensing her confusion, Jasson continued, βIβve told Fenrir you will leave with his crew tomorrow morning. As youβve heard, Iβm sure, he is taking a small party into the mountains on a secret mission. Word is theyβre looking for dragons.βHe paused, attempting to read Helikeβs face, but clearly failing. βAnyway, they needed a blood donor. Apparently there are several Phoenixes going along, and not enough blood should they fall in battle. I proposed you join them, not just because I think youβll be useful, but because I think youβre bored here. I can see the need for adventure in your eyes. Though youβre pretty good at hiding it.β----------- And that was how Helike found herself descending into the depths of the earth, with nothing but a torch to guide the way. The events had felt like a blur, as pivotal moments often feel. Just a day prior she had been catnapping on the palace walls, and now she was off to hunt a mythical creature with a motley crew. As they set off, Helike kept mostly to herself. She could tell that several among them were figures of importance. Two of the royal children led the charge into the tunnels. Then there was Bellinor, a real king and a legendary warrior, as well as his son. And there was Kaiva, the βProdigyβ whose mentor had turned the tides of the war decades ago. Thankfully the blood donor was not easily intimidated. She had spent the last years in the presence of the king and all of the royal court. As a fly on the wall at the palace, she knew people of fame and fortune were just as human as she was, sometimes comically so. So she reserved the right to judge all of them for whatever flaws would soon come to light. In the meantime, she was focused on not slipping on the cracked steps that led them down, down, down.

[ ohh I'm not sure how I got it mixed up, but I thought that Ash Collectors also donated blood! I might make Rem a Blood Donor instead, or create another one- or leave it as a space for someone else to create a Blood Donor for him? He's the type to have 'personal' attendants so it'd be someone that he's already familiar with. Sagremor was kept alive because he was meant to have the perfect match to Bell's blood.
Also, I'll see if I can get something up tomorrow? ^^; We're having an inspection at my workplace so I've been tired getting things ready and such. If not Wednesday then Thursday 'cause they'll most likely be finished by then...
I think my post for Bell will more be a response and acknowledgment of where he's at...I'd have to really dig to find something for Mokh because I lost his arc ;;; ]
