witch x boy 1x1 Shiningpaw, the RiverClan medicine cat apprentice, and Nightpaw, a warrior apprentice from WindClan, have a chance meeting when Nightpaw falls into the river and Shiningpaw has to fish him out. They continue to speak to each other at Gatherings, and occasionally interact when they run into each other on the border.
Nightpaw's mother had previously died of mysterious circumstances, and he thinks another cat killed her and that WindClan is ignoring it, possibly to protect a clan member. Nightpaw ends up enlisting the help of the only cat he knows who would could help him and keep it secret - Shiningpaw. Through trying to figure out what happened to Nightpaw's mother, the pair of apprentices grow closer.
After the work of trying to solve Nightpaw's mother's death, though, the pair grow apart. Nightpaw is made a warrior (Nightdew), Shiningpaw - now Shiningstone - is turned into a fully-fledged medicine cat, and they both get busy with clan life. They have occasional run-ins at Gatherings, but they're awkward now.
Seasons pass before the two rekindle their friendship again. Shiningstone and Brightwater, the RiverClan medicine cat, are on their way to Mothermouth when they are ambushed by a ShadowClan patrol. By some stroke of luck, Nightpaw is near enough to hear the fight break out and rushes to the RiverClan cats' aid. In the skirmish, he winds up saving Shiningstone's life, but unfortunately Brightwater passes in the attack. Nightpaw helps carry Brightwater's body back to the RiverClan camp, and then offers to escort Shiningstone to Mothermouth. This is the spark that brings the pair back together, and they soon become star-crossed lovers.
Over the moons, Shiningstone has become disenfranchised with being a medicine cat - she loves to care for others and truly feels that she is on the right path, but she sees other cats having kits and starting families and feels a strong sense of longing. She, too, wants kits. She and Nightpaw begin to discuss this, and as their relationship grows and continues, Shiningstone realizes that she is pregnant with Nightpaw's kits. Shiningstone tells Amberpelt, her best friend, about her pregnancy and trusts that he will keep it secret. When it is time, Amberpelt takes her outside of camp to help deliver the kits.
The repercussions of this action are yet to be known, but the leader and the rest of the clan will surely have something to say as Shiningstone and Amberpelt bring the kits back to camp. Will she be punished for her pregnancy? Will the kits be punished? What will happen to her relationship with Nightdew? Only time can tell.

Mouse-brains! Nightpaw thought angrily to himself, his pelt prickling with unease as he gazed down at the river nestled in the gorge. How could his Clan not take any action over the suspicious death of his mother? He felt a hiss rising in his throat as he began to stalk the edge of the gorge, sinking his long claws into the hard earth. His whole Clan was full of hare-brains, but his leader was the worst of all! When he had tried to bring up that a cat didn't just drop dead from one bad rabbit, Falconstar had completely disregarded him and his worries. He was just an apprentice, after all, and an apprentice's duty was to keep their mouths shut.
His tail lashed with thinly concealed rage, a snarl rolling from his tongue as he slammed a paw down into the ground beneath him. "What a bee-brained, stone-headed-" Before he could finish his sentence, the very earth under his paws suddenly gave way. Shock pricked his pelt, and for a moment, Nightpaw felt as if he was floating. There was nothing but air below his paws, but then his vision began to turn, spinning as he plummeted down. Wind rustled his pelt as he let out a loud cry of terror, free-falling for a short horrifying moment before his back slammed against something hard, knocking any remaining breath out of him. Before he could recover, Nightpaw was falling through the air once more as the rock he had fallen on crumbled under his weight. He lashed his claws out for any foothold of earth he could get ahold of, but only felt his claws briefly scrape against something before water enveloped him, as if hungrily devouring him like a fox.
Nightpaw's hindpaws kicked out instinctively as he floundered in the currents; he wasn't a RiverClan cat, he didn't know how to swim. Water roared, filling his mouth and ears, and he could only get the occasional gasp of air before the water pulled him back under. Was he going to die - going to join his mother in StarClan so soon? Fear gripped him like claws in his pelt, dragging him deeper and deeper into the murky darkness that surrounded him and filled his every sense. Nightpaw's heart pounded alongside the screams of the water, and his lungs began to burn as if the water itself was scorching him from the inside. The river pushed and pulled at him, causing him to lose his sense of direction as the gray-black apprentice could do nothing but hope for it to all be over soon.

Shiningpaw
with [ -- ] location [ The Gorge ]
Shiningpaw had been out gathering herbs by herself for only five minutes, and yet she was already bored beyond belief. Lonely, too! It was one of her first times out of camp with no escort and no mentor. Rowanstar and Brightwater had deemed her far enough in her training - and mature enough - to wander the territory by herself, and she had originally been over the moon about it. Now that she was out wandering the territory alone, though, she felt differently about it. The walk to the gorge was peaceful with no cat talking to her; Shiningpaw was able to listen to the birds chirping and the small creatures scuttling throughout the reeds. If she was hungry, she could’ve stopped and caught something and enjoyed it by herself. Luckily, though, her clan was in a time of plenty and there was no need for that. Still, it was nice to know that she had the freedom to do as she pleased on her lonesome patrol.
Upon reaching the gorge and getting to work searching for herbs, Shiningpaw felt much less at peace than she had on the way there. Brightwater had asked her to gather as many herbs as she could - it didn’t matter what they were, he wanted them. That had sounded great, just as walking the territory alone had sounded great. In practice, however, Shiningpaw was still struggling in recognizing which plants were herbs and which were useless weeds. The silvery she-cat was letting out grunts of frustration as she trudged along the bank, hoping that something would pop out and catch her attention.
StarClan, it seemed, heard her thoughts and decided to punish her for inwardly complaining about boredom, because all of a sudden, Shiningpaw heard the gasping breaths of a cat in the water. Her head snapped up and she scanned the river until she saw the source of the noise - a young tom was soaked to the bone and desperately trying to keep his head above water, but was failing. What on earth?! “You there!” she yowled, hoping to catch the tom’s attention to no avail. “Hey!” The cat just kept on tumbling down the river, and it looked like his body was getting more limp as he went on. Shiningpaw let out a whimper of despair; what was she supposed to?
You are a medicine cat. You are supposed to save others, regardless of who they are or where they are from, she had to remind herself. Shiningpaw scanned the shore around her in hope that some other cats would appear to save the tom, but no one came. She forced herself to take a deep breath before she made a running jump and leaped into the rushing water. Having grown up practically in the water her entire life, Shiningpaw swam with ease through the heavy current and quickly caught up to the tom, who seemed completely unresponsive. Shiningpaw grunted as she took hold of his scruff and dragged him to the sandy bank, all the while thinking how little he weighed. This cat must survive on mice alone!
Shiningpaw reached the bank after a few moments and deposited the tom - whose pelt looked completely black due to being soaked through - where he wouldn’t be swept back into the river. She quickly shook her pelt out before getting to work pumping on the tom’s chest with her front paws. Just as she had said to herself earlier, she was meant to save this cat; it didn’t matter who he was or where he was from. He deserved to live. StarClan, please help me!

Every time that Nightpaw managed to claw his way to the surface, the waters dragged him back down like weights wrapped around his hindpaws. His strength ebbed from his muscles, and he felt like he was trapped in a river of snot instead of water. He felt sluggish and slow, and soon was unable to lift his head above the water at all. The coldness of the water and the terror swirling in his mind sapped the remains of his strength, and he allowed the river to carry him along in his frigid embrace.
He dimly felt something snag his scruff - he couldn't tell what, or who it was, unable to hear or see in the depths. Was it a cat from StarClan, coming to take him? Nightpaw couldn't fight back even if he wanted to; his body ignoring his commands. He was dragged unceremoniously from the waters, being deposited onto the ground like fresh-kill. He tried to fill his lungs with precious air, but could only choke on the water that still filled his lungs. He wasn't ready to go to StarClan just yet, willing his body to cough up the water so that he could take in a breath of air. I still have something left to do here!
Soft paws began to pump at his chest, causing Nightpaw's body to convulse. He coughed harshly as the water was forced out of his lungs, and he turned his muzzle away from the other cat's face as he retched. Nightpaw gasped for air as soon as he was able to, taking in gulping breaths as he pushed the other cat away. He had almost died - and his body was keenly aware of that fact. He shivered violently as he expelled the last of the river from his mouth, swiping a paw over his mouth to wipe away any remaining water. Nightpaw was chilled to the bone, but embarrassment still pricked his pelt at the thought of having to be saved like a helpless kit in the nursery.
A fishy scent not unlike the river touched his tongue, and he fixed his blue-and-yellow gaze onto the source of the smell; his savior. She was a small, spotted silver she-cat; and very definitely RiverClan. His pelt bristled at the presence of a cat from another Clan, though he forced his fur to lie flat after a moment. Being so vulnerable in front of an unfamiliar cat left him deeply uneasy, but Nightpaw knew that showing hostility just because she was from another Clan would be mouse-brained. The spotted apprentice had saved his life, when she could've simply left him to drown. He, after all, was WindClan, and not her problem. It took an honorable cat to risk their life for another cat, especially one that was not their own, and he could respect that. And it seemed that recently, WindClan was lacking cats with this particular quality.
Nightpaw narrowed his eyes at her as he racked his brain, trying to remember what this she-cat's name was. He knew that she was a medicine cat apprentice, having recalled seeing her with the RiverClan medicine cat, Brightwater, and the other medicine cats at past gatherings. Nightpaw didn't make it a habit to interact with apprentices from the other Clans, medicine cat or not, much preferring to keep to himself. He had never understood why Rabbitpaw and Sparkpaw were so interested in sharing gossip with the other apprentices, though a part of him wished that he had at least paid enough attention to know what her name was.
"Thank you," he croaked after a long period of silence, wrapping his tail over his soaked paws as he lowered his gaze. He knew that he must seem like a hare-brain to her, a WindClan cat drowning in the river that bordered their Clans territory. The way he fell into the gorge to begin with was featherbrained. Stomping around on weak earth, throwing a tantrum like the fool he was. Nightpaw felt shame heat his pelt, though he kept his comments to himself. Staring at the ground beneath his paws, however, made him realize something. He wasn't on WindClan territory, and now that he wasn't floundering in the water, he wasn't on the border, either. Nightpaw lifted his head and looked around him, twitching an ear as he took in his surroundings.
He was on RiverClan territory now, on the sandy bank next to the river. WindClan territory was on the opposite side across the river, and he could see the broken cliff that he had fell from. To get back to the moors, he would have to climb the long face of rock, or go the long way around through RiverClan territory and use the Twoleg bridge. Nightpaw wanted to hiss at both ideas; climbing after the tumble that he took would be near impossible, while going through RiverClan territory was just as unappealing. And he wasn't alone, either. He shot the she-cat next to him a quick glance, before turning his gaze back to his wet paws. Surely a RiverClan cat wouldn't let him just stroll through their territory. Even one that had just pulled his useless tail out of the raging waters of the gorge.

As the tom slowly came back to consciousness, thoughts raced through Shiningpaw's mind. What was she supposed to do next? What was she supposed to check after a cat regained consciousness after a traumatic event? Shock, that's right, she was supposed to check for shock. And he appeared to be shivering, no doubt from the cold river water soaking through his pelt. She needed to lick his fur backwards like he was a kit to warm him up. That was most important in terms of saving his life, so Shiningpaw quickly set to doing that. After a few minutes of making sure he was beginning to warm up, she bombarded him with questions.
"Who are the current leaders of the clans? What season are we in? Who is your mentor? What is your name?" The questions were the ones that Brightwater had told her to ask a cat in shock, but she probably shouldn't have asked them all one after another without giving the tom time to respond. Shiningpaw took a deep breath and shook her head; she was obviously extremely flustered. "I'm sorry. I'm Shiningpaw of RiverClan, and I'm the medicine cat apprentice. What is your name and where are you from?" By how lean his body was, Shiningpaw would guess that he came from the moors of WindClan.

Nightpaw stared at her as if the she-cat had grown two heads, caught off guard and not quite comprehending the series of words she had just flung at him. His ears twitched with both confusion and amusement as she paused to repeat her words in a more understandable manner, and he listened close to her much clearer words.
Her name was Shiningpaw. A niggling feeling in his head told him that he had heard the she-cat's name before, though he very much doubted that he would've been able to recall it on his own. Nightpaw gave his ruffled chest fur a few quick licks before responding in kind. "My name is Nightpaw," he mewed gruffly, dipping his head as he spoke. "I'm an apprentice of WindClan."
His voice was still raw and his muscles still ached from the assault of the water, but he tried to hold himself up with some pride to reflect the dignity of a WindClan cat. I must look like a twice-drowned kit, Nightpaw thought dryly to himself.

Shiningpaw had never heard of him before, but she nodded anyway as Nightpaw recited his name and clan. She felt proud that she had guessed his clan correctly; it was possibly a useless skill, that she was good at identifying which clan a cat was from, but it was a skill nonetheless. “Well, Nightpaw, if you don’t mind, I would like to make sure you’re in a good enough state to get around. Let me ask you the questions I did before but… slower.” She felt her ears heat up with embarrassment.
Before continuing her line of questioning, Shiningpaw gave Nightpaw’s pelt a few more licks in the wrong direction. He still wasn’t completely dry and the air was still a tad cold, even though it was new-leaf. “Who are the current leaders of the four clans?” When he answered that correctly, she nodded and asked the other questions for the second time. He answered them all correctly and Shiningpaw took that as a sign that he wasn’t too traumatized from his impromptu swim in the river, and that he would be fine to get up and walk around.
“Okay, Nightpaw. I need to take you back to the RiverClan camp to be checked out by our medicine cat, Brightwater. I don’t know enough to give you a proper lookover, and I can’t just leave you out here by yourself, so it’s best if he sees to you.”

Nightpaw's eyes widened in shock at her suggestion, and the fur along his back rose. "We can't do that," he meowed slowly, trying to keep any hint of annoyance out of his tone. He caught himself instinctively about to add a quick 'you bee-brain', but swallowed the insult back, not wanting to offend the cat who had just saved his pelt. "If I can get back to my territory, neither of our Clan leaders have to know. I'll have Shadefall look over me." Nightpaw purposefully left out the fact that the WindClan medicine cat probably wasn't too well versed on treating cats who had almost drowned, but the thought of going into RiverClan camp made him uneasy.
He pointed in the direction of the Twoleg bridge with his tail, though despite his hesitance at being marched into RiverClan camp, knew that the walk back to his Clan's territory would not be easy. Nightpaw still felt very weak, and the winds of the moor would only make the chill he felt through his fur and against his skin even worse. Falconstar will have my head if he finds out I trespassed on RiverClan territory, he thought with a long sigh. But would it be worth it, not souring both ties between WindClan and RiverClan and his relationship with his mentor further if he ended up catching sick and dying before he could uncover what had really happened to his mother?
Nightpaw let out a frustrated growl as he kneaded the ground with his paws, nearly forgetting that the silver apprentice was at his side. The feeling of having his cold pelt mussed caused his growl to taper off, and he turned his gaze onto her with a quizzical look as she lapped at his dark fur. Realizing that she was trying to keep him from freezing his tail off, he simply gave her a grateful nod of his head and remained silent. He wasn't sure what to say to Shiningpaw - she didn't have to help him, and taking him into camp could get her a lashing from her mentor and Clan leader as well. She wouldn't be at fault if he went back to WindClan territory now and caught cold, although Nightpaw wasn't certain if the spotted she-cat would see it that way. She seemed to be a very empathetic, and noble, cat.

Shiningpaw didn’t want to call Nightpaw a mouse-brain, but, well, he was certainly acting like one! The cat had just half-drowned and would have died if Shiningpaw weren’t there to save him, and now he wanted to waltz back to his own territory like nothing had happened? Like he was absolutely fine? Not on Shiningpaw’s watch. “Absolutely not,” she stated resolutely. She wasn’t normally stubborn, but she could be when it was required of her. “Nightpaw, you almost died. You certainly would have if I hadn’t been there to drag you out of the river and get the water out of your lungs. I am taking you back to the RiverClan camp, whether you like it or not.
“And,” she continued with a stern, threatening look on her face (or her best attempt at it), “if you try to find your way home by yourself, I can go back to camp and get a patrol of warriors out here faster than you can cross the border. So, really, it’s your choice: the easy way, with me, or the hard way, with warriors.” The silver she-cat flicked her ears and looked Nightpaw in the eyes, begging him to make the right decision.

He growled in frustration at the she-cat's words, his claws flexing in the ground. Call a patrol on him! She was being fish-brained. Did she really think she held enough authority in her Clan to convince a group of warriors to go after a WindClan cat? Nightpaw let his annoyance simmer for a few heartbeats before letting out an exasperated sigh, shaking his dark head back and forth. There was no point in arguing with Shiningpaw, the stubborn furball. They would accomplish nothing, standing here and bickering.
"Fine. Lets go." Nightpaw sighed, rising to his paws. His pelt was still wet to the touch, though it was starting to dry in the cool newleaf air. RiverClan territory was foreign to him, and as he gazed towards Riverclan territory. It was similar to WindClan territory in that it wasn't as tree-heavy, and was open to the sky and Silverpelt. He vastly preferred it to ThunderClan, or even ShadowClan territory. He couldn't understand how those cats could live in those trees, not being feel their warrior ancestors looking down on them as their slept. To rise with the dawn, and feel the open air on their pelts; instead surrounded constantly by lurking shadows. Even so, his paws pricked with apprehension at the thought of going deep into the water-loving Clan's territory.

Shiningpaw
with [ Nightpaw, Brightwater ] location [ RiverClan camp ]
Shiningpaw nodded succinctly, content that Nightpaw had agreed (even though it was begrudgingly). "Let's get on then." Shiningpaw nudged the still-soaked apprentice up to his feet and pressed her pelt against his in an attempt to get him warmer. She traversed carefully through her clan's territory, making sure to avoid bodies of water whenever possible. They did, however, have to cross over one stream to get into camp, but it was shallow enough that it only got their paws wet.
Upon entering the camp, heads swiveled to stare at Shiningpaw and the foreign cat she'd brought into the heart of the territory. She felt herself shrinking back a bit, especially when Rowanstar jumped down from the Sunning Rock to stare her down. "What is this, Shiningpaw? Why have you brought a-" the cream-colored she-cat paused to scent the air "-a WindClan cat into our territory?" Rowanstar assessed Nightpaw and saw that he was soaked and chilled, but she still waited for Shiningpaw's explanation. Brightwater did so as well, after exiting from his den to stand beside his leader.
"I-I..." Shiningpaw couldn't seem to get the words out of her mouth. Whispers began to fly around camp, but were silenced as she finally found her voice. She had to remind herself that she had done nothing less and nothing more than what the Warrior Code and Medicine Cat Code asked of her. "I saved this cat's life. His name is Nightpaw and, yes, he is from WindClan. He was in his territory when a cliff next to the Gorge collapsed underneath him. I pulled him out of the river moments before he would have drowned and died." Brightwater's eyes seemed to light up at that, as if he was showing his apprentice his pride and support without saying anything. "I decided to bring him back to camp because, well... I don't know enough to properly assess him and I didn't want to send him back into WindClan territory just to collapse on the way home."
Rowanstar flicked her gaze between the two apprentices and then turned to Brightwater. "Well, this is in your paws now. Deal with Shiningpaw as you see fit; this is medicine cat business, and I have no control over how you choose to enforce or abide by your code. When it is time to send Nightpaw home, let me know and I will assemble an escort party." Brightwater nodded in understanding and motioned for Shiningpaw and Nightpaw to follow him to the medicine cat's den.
"Fell into the water, eh? Felt like taking a swim?"

Nightpaw let the silver she-cat guide his pawsteps, and gave an involuntary shiver at the feeling of her fur pressed against his. It had been a long time since he felt the close touch of another cat; his prickly personality usually drove other cats away from him. Normally he would snap and hiss at the uncomfortable proximity, but he was much too exhausted to do much to acknowledge the physical presence. And truthfully, it wasn't as uncomfortable as it normally was, but he attributed the lack of discomfort to his fatigue.
The tom hesitated at the side of the stream, his paws prickling with apprehension at the idea of touching another body of water, even if it was only a small, snaking stream, as opposed to a raging river. At Shiningpaw's insistence, however, he dipped one of his forepaws into the water, his ears flattening against his head at the cold contact of water before crossing the stream with the other apprentice beside him.
Immediately upon entering camp, he felt the eyes of multiple cats turn to bore into him. Nightpaw's fur bristled along his spine, and he met Rowanstar's challenging gaze with a lift of his chin. There was a small, wriggling fear in the back of his mind that the RiverClan cats might attack him, but he tried to hide any uncertainty by holding himself with confidence and meeting their leader's icy gaze with his own. After a moment of a mutual stare-off, he turned to face a new cat; a blue-gray tom with eyes the color of the sky in Newleaf. Brightwater, his mind helpfully supplied, and Nightpaw gave the medicine cat a curt nod of acknowledgement.
As he followed the other tom into his den, the medicine cat's words caused an irritated growl to build in his throat. "You heard your apprentice," Nightpaw grumbled, the tip of his tail twitching. "The gorge crumbled under my paws. WindClan cats don't just go for evening swims." Mouse-brain, he added grumpily as he was reminded of the chill of his coat caused by his recent dip, though Nightpaw did not speak these words out loud. It would do him no good to insult a cat who could very well finish what the river started. Nightpaw flexed his claws in the pliant, wet earth beneath him, apprehension still written on his face. He didn't trust any of these cats, and wished that he was back in WindClan territory, on the familiar moors.
He then thought of Falconstar, and wondered if his mentor was worried about his disappearance, or if he was too pre-occupied with his duties as leader to notice. Or maybe... He simply didn't care where Nightpaw was. His pelt somehow grew colder at the thought, and despite being surrounded by Shiningpaw and her mentor, Nightpaw suddenly felt very alone. The fire challenging flame of pride and indignation that he had shown both Rowanstar and Brightwater petered out, and Nightpaw settled down in the medicine cat's den in silence, wrapping his long tail around his paws.

Shiningpaw
with [ Nightpaw, Brightwater ] location [ RiverClan camp ]
Brightwater was protective of his apprentice - she was the future medicine cat of RiverClan, after all - and as such, didn't like the way Nightpaw spoke about her as if she wasn't there. Nor did Brightwater like the burning glares he had sent at his apprentice, himself, and Rowanstar or the tone the foreign apprentice had taken with him. If he had been from RiverClan, Brightwater would have reprimanded him sharply and schooled him on the proper way to act around one's betters - but that was the issue. He wasn't from RiverClan; he was a WindClan cat, and so it was no business of Brightwater's to school him unless he did something grievous. Damn the Medicine Cat Code. If it weren't for the Code, Shiningpaw could have left the half-dead tom to drown. In reality, though, Brightwater wouldn't wish that upon any cat - he was just annoyed.
"Nightpaw," Brightwater started as he went to gather the herbs he required, signaling for Shiningpaw to follow him. "You'd do good to remember you are in RiverClan camp, surrounded by RiverClan warriors, with no idea how to return home. We could easily keep you captive until your attitude improves." It was a harsh tease, one meant to slightly improve the overall mood as well as to put the WindClan apprentice in his place.
"Now, Shiningpaw..." Brightwater instructed his apprentice as to how to further help a drowned cat, and had to continually resist the urge to call Nightpaw a fish out of water. When they were finished, Nightpaw looked to be on the mend, good enough to begin the journey home, and Shiningpaw's spirits seemed to have improved. "I'll go let Rowanstar know that you're ready to go home, Nightpaw. Shiningpaw, gather up some travelling herbs for him. The warriors who escort him won't need them, but he definitely will; he's still not completely healed, and won't be for a few sunrises. I'll make sure to tell that to Shadefall tomorrow night at the Half-Moon Meeting." With that, the blue-gray tom left the medicine den to go speak with Rowanstar.
Shiningpaw - now that she was in her clan's camped and had received praise from Brightwater for saving Nightpaw's life, as well as for helping him further take care of Nightpaw - looked much more confident than she had mere hours ago when she and Nightpaw had first met. Her head was held high and she seemed as calm as a leaf-green breeze. "You really should be thanking me and Brightwater," she said in a matter-of-fact tone. "If it wasn't for the both of us, you wouldn't be able to go home. You'd be with StarClan instead."

The fur along Nightpaw's back began to bristle, and his ears flattened at the blue-gray tom's words. Keep him prisoner? He bit back a retort, though a low growl rumbled from his throat as he flexed his claws in the soft ground. He wouldn't be able to fight past the whole of RiverClan by himself, but also knew that the enemy clan had no reason to actually keep him here. He had fallen into RiverClan territory on accident; and being irritated wasn't against the Warrior Code. Besides, he thought with a shiver of uncertainty, some cat would come looking for me.
Nightpaw kept his head low as the medicine cat continued to work, staring at his paws as if they held a secret to share. When Brightwater padded out of the den, he lifted his muzzle to shoot his retreating form a suspicious look before turning his head sharply at Shiningpaw's preening words. His odd-colored eyes narrowed in annoyance, and his long, drying tail wrapped around his paws tightly. "I didn't ask for any cat to save me," he muttered under his breath, mostly to himself, then he shook his head. If he had joined StarClan, he wouldn't have to had put up with the RiverClan cats -- but who would investigate the unusual circumstances behind Heatherwhisker's death, if not him? Nightpaw supposed he did feel grateful to the two RiverClan cats for saving him from a young death, though their prideful attitudes caused him to hold his tongue in expressing said sentiment.
The thought of his mother, however, made him keenly aware of the stone that had been rolling around in his stomach since her death, and of its weight trying to pull him down to the ground. It was hard to accept that she was gone; his bright, warm-hearted and loving mother. Cats had always teased him over the stark duality of their personalities, and Nightpaw had always rolled his eyes and scoffed. How he had taken her fussing and cheerfulness for granted. Nightpaw would never see her again, and he closed his eyes in silent grief and hoped that she was watching over him and guiding his paws from StarClan. He took some solace in the idea that she would never be hungry, cold, or in pain again, but the knowledge that she could still be here, with him, chilled him to the bone.
After a long and quiet moment, he opened his eyes and turned his gaze onto the other apprentice. He had lost faith in the ability of WindClan's medicine cat after the passing of his mother, but... Shiningpaw wasn't the WindClan medicine cat. And unlike Rabbitpaw, she most likely wasn't close enough with Shadefall to share idle gossip with him. Nightpaw's ears perked up at this realization, and he leaned towards her with new-found energy. His earlier surliness faded away like morning dew, and a youthful spark lit his eyes now. "Can you tell me about all the berries you know about?" The gray-black tom blurted, before suddenly remembering himself. He gave his chest a quick, embarrassed lick, then added a quiet "please".

with [ Nightpaw ] location [ RiverClan medicine cat den ]
Shiningpaw wasn't sure of how to take Nightpaw's sudden changes in demeanor. She was left to fidget awkwardly as she tried to think of what was causing the young tom's emotions to fluctuate so rapidly. Well, being in "enemy" territory with a bunch of strange cats could do it, I suppose... But why is he asking about herbs? "Why are you asking about herbs?" Clearly, Shiningpaw still hadn't mastered the art of not immediately saying whatever she was thinking. The silver she-cat narrowed her eyes in slight suspicion. What use did a warrior apprentice have for knowledge of berries? "I can give you my knowledge on berries, but why?" she said after realizing Nightpaw had actually said "please".

Nightpaw paused, his impulsiveness leaving him no chance to come up with a reasonable excuse for such a request. "I lost a cat who meant a great deal to me- She fell gravely ill after consuming a poisonous berry." He admitted, trying to remain vague about how extensive his personal connection ran. A cat from an enemy clan didn't need to know how deep his grief was. His ears flattened against his head as he continued, though he tried to keep any bitterness from seeping into his voice.
"Shadefall is very.. Particular about his herb stores." The tip of his tail twitched from side to side, betraying his irritation. "And very secretive about what he does. I understand if you don't want to show a cat from an enemy clan your own stores," he meowed, dipping his head and hoping he came off as polite. "I just really, really need to know which berry killed this cat. So I can prevent any more cats from making the same mistake." Nightpaw lifted his head and gazed into Shiningpaw's eyes with determination. And to find out if Shadefall had a paw to play in all this, he added silently. Unchewed berries don't just appear in the belly of fresh-kill.

Shiningpaw
with [ Nightpaw ] location [ RiverClan medicine cat den ]
Shiningpaw was very much still suspicious of Nightpaw, but when he put it like that... and with the look in his eyes... Ugh. She couldn't imagine being in his position, if a cat in RiverClan accidentally ingested some poisonous berries and died because of it. He was just trying to protect his clanmates and do what he could for them. The thought that they already had a medicine cat to do that didn't really cross her mind; she just felt sympathetic towards the poor tom. Even after having such a close encounter with death that day, he was still looking to help his clan. So, Shiningpaw let out a small sigh and begrudgingly said, "Sure."
The silver she-cat stretched her head to make sure no cat was coming towards the medicine cat den, and then motioned for Nightpaw to follow her to the herb store. She pointed out all of the lethal herbs they had - which was quite a lot; they kept them on hand so that they could teach clanmates what to stay away from - including deathberries, foxglove seeds, holly berries, nightshade, and hemlock. She explained to Nightpaw all of the different effects, how quickly a cat would pass after ingesting each herb, and what signs to look out for. "I hope that wasn't too much information all at once," she muttered when she realized she had been rambling, her ears turning hot with embarassment.

Nightpaw dipped his head and followed her without another word, his ears swiveling at the sound of their paws padding over the floor of the den. As the herbs came into view, Nightpaw could only identify a few of the common herbs, such as catnip and borage. He listened keenly as Shiningpaw pointed out various berries, and their pelts momentarily brushed as he moved past her to sniff each berry curiously. He tried to compare their scents to the faded memories of his past, though his mind drew up blanks. It was almost like a word on the tip of his tongue, a feeling that was both familiar yet dimmed by the passage of time.
After a long, thoughtful moment, Nightpaw stepped back to Shiningpaw's side. "No, thank you for the information." He replied and turned to face her as he gratefully flicked his tail. "This was all very helpful, and I can only imagine how much work you medicine cats carry in your paws." Nightpaw added, hints of gratitude and respect were evident in his quiet mew. He gave the berries one last, long look before giving Shiningpaw a small nod to indicate that his investigation was finished.
His exhausted limbs began to ache from so much standing, and he sat down to relieve some of the strain in his hindpaws. Shiningpaw had been instructed to gather some traveling herbs for him, which meant he had some time to rest his weary paws. His muscles complained at the thought of trekking the long way back to the WindClan camp, but at the same time, he was ready to be back in the comfort of familiar territory. Nightpaw watched the other apprentice work, though remained silent. He had never really been one for small-talk with his own clanmates; he was unsure of how to approach idle conversations.
