is bumblestripe character assassination? discuss I wouldn’t say his character has been assassinated. Moreover he’s become colder and bitter due to his failed romance. I’d say there’s more of characters being Flanderized and becoming written more one-dimensional with 1 or 2 personality traits becoming much more frequent and exaggerated with their other traits being more or less not used much. And many characters just kinda being jumbled together within a certain personality stereotype that makes them just blend together, instead of at least being somewhat distinguishable and individualized between them, besides the current protagonist. So I’d say characters have just become more watered down and diluted, which dependent on opinion could be considered character assassination. While it does carry conceptual similarities, it’s not exactly character reinvention, moreover just becoming much more one-dimensional, and having 1 certain characteristic being expressed in exaggerated amounts for a period, then routinely shifting between them as the plot demands. They’ve definitely become more stilted to acting in favor of what progresses the plot, rather it’s logical r nonsensical, I’ll say that much.

Hmm...if I had to pick a character I guess Yellowfang is the best example? I've never seen people go from loving a character so much to hating her after she died, but I guess that's what StarClan does to a cat.

I'd say Tigerheart/star is a good example.
His personality in recent books is COMPLETELY different than early OOTS/PoT

I'd say Tigerheart/star is a good example. His personality in recent books is COMPLETELY different than early OOTS/PoT How so? In the second half of AVOS and TBC, he is written as short tempered, arrogant, basically a total shit head. He has become so unlikable compared to PoT/OOTS him, where he is shown to be playful, mischievous, kind, etc. A total 180 of his earlier character.

RAVENPAW IN REDTAIL'S DEBT

RAVENPAW IN REDTAIL'S DEBT I actually thought that was kind of cool, the idea that he became a lot more subdued after actually seeing the blood and gore in his face. It's easy to talk big when you haven't ever seen a fight before, less so after the deputy of Riverclan threatens to kill you and you see your mentor murdering your own deputy.

Yeah, but the reason Ravenpaw was apprenticed to Tigerclaw was because of his nervousness. I don't remember which, but Bluestar mentioned it in either Into the Wild or Bluestar's Prophecy

is bumblestripe character assassination? discuss I don't think so, imo. Just because a character has nice traits, dosen't mean they can't show bad ones. If a background character with no personality beforehand is only shown to be "supportive" and "kind" before they are added bad traits there's no character assasination. They just have been given bad traits and involved in a love drama. But because they were literally nothing beforehand, his character was never ruined.

I agree (and personally I don't think Bumblestripe's character was ruined), but people don't seem to want to apply this logic to other characters like Finleap for example. I don't know how many times I've seen people claim that he was ruined.

They just have been given bad traits and involved in a love drama. But because they were literally nothing beforehand, his character was never ruined. i can see that. on the other hand, though, we did see what Bumblestripe was like previously when he felt rejected and unfairly treated by Dovewing in the past, and he was shown to be pretty consistently respectful of her decisions (albeit blunt). so i can also see why it's weird that he seems to do the opposite at times in later AVoS/TBC. like in one book, he is sincerely glad she is happy with tigerheart (if saddened), and in the next book he's absolutely horrible to her for it. IIRC, i'm pretty sure that Kate Cary was on record as hating Bumblestripe and preferring Tigerheart, and she wrote all the books where he was portrayed more negatively (Raging Storm, Silent Thaw, Darkness Within). After Vicky left, Cherith wrote the books where he's portrayed neutrally/positively, namely BrS, ROF, and Shattered Sky. So it might not be a matter of character assassination, per se, but I think Kate's bias against Bumblestripe's character definitely plays into how he's written in her books. it makes his characterization inconsistent and confusing. EDIT: also, a general clarification for everyone -- a lot of people use the term "character assassination" to mean "ruined", but the two aren't synonymous. the former refers to anytime a character's personality seems to abruptly change without observable growth, whether it makes them better or worse characters.
