This might be a stupid question, but I just started thinking about it. How did ShadowClan manage to beat WindClan and chase them from their homes, if they were doing so badly? It says that apart from Brokenstar and a few of his best warriors (Blackfoot and Clawface) that ShadowClan isn’t doing very good. They eat crowfood and have barely trained kittens for warriors. Also several of them got exiled which is less cats to fight for you. So how did they manage to beat WindClan in these conditions?? I know WindClan is skinny but it just doesn’t make sense to me that (presumably) healthy, full grown cats can be beaten like this. Especially when all it takes to take over ShadowClan is: Yellowfang (elderly), Ashfur (elderly), Nightpelt (elderly), Dawncloud, Whitestorm, Darkstripe, Willowpelt, Firepaw, and Graypaw.
I know realistically it’s because Erin Hunter wanted it to happen but I just wanted to talk about this. Also please don’t think I’m hating on these books because I really loved it. Also please no spoilers for Yellowfang’s book.

The field guides actually have that as a story. To abridge, ShadowClan by the time we see them in ITW isn't nearly as exhausted as the attack on WindClan. Couple that with how ShadowClan attacked, in the middle of the night with full intention of killing every cat they could find, which isn't exactly good for WindClan being attacked in their camp with vulnerable kits, and WindClan simply had too much to lose by staying and fighting.

We see the fight in Blackstar's novella. Brokenstar and Blackfoot tricked Tallstar and Deadfoot into leaving the camp for a parlay when in reality, Shadowclan was attacking the leaderless camp. Brokenstar then pinned down Tallstar and threatened to blind him if he didn't leave, and it was noted that while Tallstar was keeping a cool voice, his scent was full of panic. Fear and deception defeated Windclan rather than being beaten outright on the field.

I think ShadowClan also had the advantage because they had no hesitation to break the warrior code and kill WindClan warriors, who probably still were trying to inflict non-fatal blows at least until they realised what was happening. It wasn't a fair fight in the slightest.
