I haven't read warriors in a while, but I thought she was fine. Very sweet character, and I liked Root x Bristle from what I remember.

I always found her to be boring and yawn-worthy, although the end of ALIM made me like her more. The way she sacrificed herself to save Rootspring and defeat Ashfur was heartbreaking. It made her character shine.

She is the perfect example for a warrior. She didnt only care for her own clan and friends, she cared for all the clans and sacrificed her existence for some cats she didnt even know. / saved her cousin from getting erased, knowing it would happen to her instead.
Shes brave and intelligent + an excellent fighter (literally knocked multiple DF cats down with one swipe and could assert herself against Mapleshade) making her overall a badass character. Definitely my favorite cat/character for eternity.

I was rather neutral on her for a while due to the way a lot of her supposed characterization from the first book was kind of shoved aside for her romance with Rootspring in the following ones. But then ALitM brought the Bristlefrost from Lost Stars back and I now really like her and wish things could have been different for her from the start. She will be dearly missed and her sacrifice was a heartbreaking but still also incredibly selfless thing for her to do.

I like Bristlefrost. I found it refreshing that she didn't have any powers and found her spying to be really fascinating to read. The way she died made me like her even more because it was so brave, like the true warrior she'd always wanted to be.

She’s your typical generic goodie-two-shoes type character. She has some likable traits and qualities. She’s courageous, optimistic, fairly intelligent with overall generic aspirations of becoming a great warrior, and serving her clan that’s she’s fiercely loyal too. Outside of Lost Stars she’s mostly just a Camera to give us view to what’s transpiring inside Thunderclan, and give us everyone else’s reactions to the whole ordeal, or being Rootsprings love interest. There’s nothing really memorable or outside of the ordinary that she’s accomplished or done otherwise that really couldn’t of been done by anyone else. And her backstory and relationships/Friendships are very rushed and poorly developed, that she fails to ground herself as an great or memorable character in my eyes. Overall I’m neutral bordering on dislike, since while she has some likable and admirable personality traits and character qualities, she lacks much needed tangible sustenance and depth to truly make her outshine the many others among her character stereotype. She’s not Great nor horrible, just mediocre imho.

Arguably my favorite protagonist. She's got decent characterization, and ALitM was the perfect, if tragic, end to her arc. Bonus points for an actually unique forbidden romance.

I've always felt Hollyleaf was one of their best characters, along with Dovewing & Ivypool, and Squirrelflight... not a huge fan of her, but she's certainly a decent character.

She was so young to die though. I love that they brought back Bristlefrost's Lost Stars personality though for the finale of The Broken Code.

She's one of my top five favorite characters: kind, badass, compassionate, brave. I love how she helped get the Dark Forest cats on her side and I love (however sad) how she sacrificed her entire existence for every warrior and Clan. And props to her and Rootspring for having a good, mature forbidden relationship.

not gonna be a broken record on her again, but to summarize: worst protagonist ever. her development was rushed (especially with the rootspring romance that came out of nowhere and took up the remainder of her character). her ceasing to exist at the end is the best thing that could have happened to her. good ridance.

Honestly, I think she's one of the better-written protagonists. Not necessarily up there with Gray Wing, Jayfeather, and Ivypool, but obviously not as bad and inconsistent as Dovewing, Squirrelflight, and Lionblaze.
I'd personally put her at a middle ground, leaning too much more likable, alongside Violetshine.
She's pretty consistent throughout the series. She's a loyal, strong, and admirable character, that was always shown to be selfless and put her clan and others before herself. She's willing to risk her life to help anyone in need, but that's also one of the reasons she was taken advantage of, showing that she's not perfect either. I don't think she's just the stereotypical goodie-two shoes either, she's shown to be sassy, jealous, and get annoyed. She has flaws that are obvious enough, but ones that don't ruin her character, and become her only trait, like for example Shadowsight.
Speaking of which, I think compared to the other two protagonists, she's definitely more of a breath of fresh air. She was more down to Earth, realistic, and put in very high tension situations that made her story interesting. She didn't need some prophecy, she didn't need some special powers, she didn't need a character crutch, she was just her. And I liked that a lot. I think powers and prophecies in this series have become so oversaturated at this point, that it doesn't feel special anymore, and it's not as exciting. So when none of that was attached to Bristlefrost's character, I was glad.
She also had a lot of familial/kin interactions, which I honestly appreciated as well. It gave her siblings some proper spotlight and personality, while also showing the dynamic between her and her parents too. I do wish there was more, but it was definitely satisfying, honestly, the only other person that one-up that was Root and Tree, because of the development of their relationship. But the raw amount of emotion and anguish her family felt after the events of TBC shows just how close they were and how much they loved her imo.
Her arc with Ashfur was, in my opinion, one of the most interesting povs at the time. Sure we get something similar later on with Shadowsight, but it's not as entertaining, and honestly felt unnecessary. We get to see how Bristlefrost is trying to cope with her jealousy and sadness, pushing it away, and trying to focus on her loyalty to her clan. Ashfur takes advantage of her, and uses her to spy on her own clanmates, and even though at first she thought what she was doing was right, morally she felt guilty. It was a classic moral vs law situation, and I love those types of internal conflicts with characters. Because it forced her to actually think and follow what she believed was the right choice while struggling to survive the consequences of her actions. I found her mental state to be fun to dissect and analyze. From her numbness over Stemleaf's death to her clinging to Spotfur out of guilt, to her strained perspective on the code and her clanmates, and then having to deal with the wake of it falling apart.
When it comes to her romance, I don't think it's as bad as people claim it is. She and Rootspring had actual moments together, and time spent on screen. Going from associates to friends, and then eventually Rootspring confessing to her to which she returns. Out of 6 books, they had 4 prior to that leading to that moment, which imo is plenty of time, especially when her crush on Stemleaf was obviously a thing back before the first book even started, and he rejected her early on. So plenty of time for her to move on. Was it perfect? No. But it was definitely one of the healthiest outcomes of a forbidden romance.
Considering horrible forbidden romances like LeafCrow and DoveTiger have set the standard so low, it was a relief to see Root and Bristle not be irresponsible with their feelings. They didn't immediately jump into a relationship, start seeing one another in secret, get pregnant, run away together, or lie to their clanmates about their loyalties. They actually discussed their feelings properly, their future, gave it actual thought, and made decisions based on their loyalties and love for one another and their clan. In the end, I love that Bristlefrost decided to stay with ThunderClan, while Rootspring was willing to move clans to be with her, which is honestly an incredible outcome tbh. I know people tend to dislike Bristlefrost because of her romance arc with Rootspring, but honestly, it really isn't that bad and was done way better than past forbidden relationships.
As for her time in the Dark Forest, I think that was one of the few highlights I liked about the last two books. I think one thing that made me happy was that her romance arc didn't completely consume and ruin her character. She remained consistent from what I saw, and her development was well done. I admired how hard she fought, her fighting skills were incredible, for her to fight against a horde of DF cats and spirits, and even hold her own against Mapleshade of all cats, is impressive. She risked her life several times to save and protect those she cared about but also showed compassion and enlightenment to wayward DF cats that in return helped her.
Her actions at the very end were also incredibly heroic. Again, I liked that Bristlefrost, in a sense, felt so relatable, realistic, down to earth, and understandable. She was a young warrior with hopes and dreams, one that loved, lost, and loved again. One that wanted to do what was right, even if it went against what she was taught. One that wouldn't hesitate to help others, even if they lashed out at her. She wanted to do what she believed in her heart was the right thing to do, but still, she wasn't some emotionless robot or follower. She took action. She had emotions. She could still bleed, she wasn't invincible or had powers, or a foreseen prophecy to help her. She was her own person.
She sacrificed herself to save Shadowsight. Knowing full well she may not survive. She bravely threw herself at Ashfur, and plunged them both into the waters of the Dark Forest. She could have swum back up to save herself, to where she knew everyone would be waiting for her. But instead, she chose to drag Ashfur down with her to ensure their safety. She not only saved Shadowsight, but she also saved her family, her friends, and all of the clans.
Despite being surrounded by the cold dark deaths, in her last moments she was able to see the life she could have had. The life she wanted. And despite everything she felt nothing but warmth. She died happy in her last moments before ceasing to exist anymore.
I'm both happy and sad about the outcome. I thought she died so young and so soon, and she was an enjoyable character to have around. I felt other characters deserved to die before her honestly and to have her future ripped from her was very tragic. However, at the end of the day, she will always be remembered as a hero, who saved everyone, and she left behind an incredible legacy in the hearts of all the cats she saved.
Everyone mounted and honored her. Especially Rootspring, who I know will continue to love her while he walks the forest, and even into his own afterlife. It's a very bittersweet ending, but probably one of the most well-done conclusions for a main character since Gray Wing.
So with that, I personally think that Bristlefrost is definitely well deserving as one of the better-written characters, and honestly one of my favorites. I'd put her right below Gray Wing and Ivypool, but above Violetshine in my book.
