From when super editions became a thing until AVOS, they were written as supplemental stories to expand on the Warriors lore. They would usually focus on important characters from previous arcs who are no longer around, and would serve as a way to give us a look at what their lives were like prior to TPB. But during the AVOS run, the super editions were written to build upon the current narrative being told in the arc. Both Hawkwing's Journey and Tigerheart's Shadow were very important to the plot of AVOS, so they stood out from the previous SEs that stood on their own.
I think it's a really cool idea because it presents a different perspective on the ongoing plot with different characters. But on the other hand, it creates a problem similar to the MCU in which fans have more material to keep up with in order to follow the plot of the main series without becoming confused. From a business standpoint it's smart because it forces readers to purchase more books, but from a casual reader's perspective it can be frustrating. I also like the one-off SEs focusing on older characters, I think they can be very cool. Luckily it seems we are getting a mix of both types now.
Which format do you guys prefer? This can also be extended to novellas too.

I really do like the tie ins. But they are pretty annoying if you’re in the position where you have to buy the book. I always thought the SEs are expensive. I don’t have to worry about it since I read all of my books from the library, lucky me!

I honestly prefer those SEs and Novellas who have an independent story since this also means other fans or even newer ones will not have to read every book in the arc. Especially if the book takes place during events from the past.
This can also be applied to Graphic Novels. I love that any modern ones until now are set during TPB or TNP. A Shadow in RiverClan and Winds of Change are both excellent in giving a more fleshed out perspective and development on Feathertail and Mudclaw. I'm very sure that the new release of Exile from ShadowClan will do the same for Nightpelt/star and his fellow ShadowClan companions.

I greatly prefer independent SE’s. I despise that some super editions become required reading, especially in the middle of a series. Reading has to be brought to a screeching halt because now I have to read around 400 or so pages of a character separate from the main cast. If the required reading SE’s/tie-ins were like Hawkwing’s Journey where it explains something prior to the beginning of the first book of a series or just after that first book. I’d be far less critical, it’s the books like TS and GV that are thrown in the middle or near the end of the series that greatly irritate me. SQH, despite its flaws does introduce the Sisters very well. But I feel the explanation for readers who didn’t know about SQH or the Sisters prior ends up falling a bit flat on its face. Plus the tie-ins are annoying in a different fashion as I need to momentary stop reading and figure out when to read the tie-in to have further context.

I think the biggest reason I prefer tie ins to an independent story is tie ins usually mean less retcons (which I despise) and less rehashing a story we already know about. Also tie ins progress the overall plot, like Hawkwing’s Journey, Tigerheart’s Shadow, and Squirrelflight’s hope.

I honestly like both, because with tie-ins you can see a different character's perspective on the story and get some extra scenes with them, and with independent stories, you can learn more about a previously unknown or mysterious character. I'm not sure which one I prefer.

Independent books. I like the stray group in Tigerheart's Shadow and Larksong in Squirrelflight's Hope, but by god sitting through those two was an awful experience

Independent books, they have a lot more to cover and there's less likely to be repeats and dragged-on storylines.

I think I prefer independent ones rather than tie ins. As someone who can read though a 300 book in a day but for some reason struggles to finish a 500 page one in two weeks? Yeah independent has always been better for me. I was very engaged in FSQ but BP felt very sluggish to me for some reason, maybe because I already knew what was coming by the end and how everything would turn out so I was less engaged to begin with.
