Why didn't Brambleclaw and Firestar make an effort to figure out who the traitor was who Hawkfrost told them about before he died? It would have been pretty easy to question Birchpaw about why he led Firestar to the fox trap, and he would tell them that his mentor did it (who was also there at the scene). This should have led to them being very suspicious of both Birchpaw and Ashfur (though considering the possibility of Birchpaw leading Firestar there by accident and another cat being the traitor), but in canon they just seem to do nothing with the knowledge that there is a traitor and treat the obvious suspects completely normally.

Probably because they don't consider Hawkfrost a trustworthy source of information

Probably because they don't consider Hawkfrost a trustworthy source of information ashfur was the one who sent birchpaw to get firestar , so like why didn't they trace it back to ashfur that way? since ashfur was still a good warrior back then, is it fine to assume firestar and brambleclaw wouldnt suspect him?

Probably Plus Ashfur could have spun it as him being tricked by Hawkfrost...who also manipulated Mudclaw. Ashfur is just not a reasonable suspect at that time. People think he can be kind of a jerk, but his murderous intentions aren't obvious until like...the fire scene
