It has been stated multiple times that StarClan cats pick up recently dead warriors and guide them to the StarClan hunting grounds. We know it happend because we got a whole scene with Snowfur and Mosskit in one of the field guides, and it was implied Fernshade was going to pick up Russetfur. But why has the Dark Forest a different system? When Mapleshade died, she woke up in the Dark Forest, with a voice welcoming her. It may be because Dark Forest cats are trapped in hell, and StarClan cats can go wherever they like, but I'm not sure if that's canon anymore. Tigerstar was able to watch Brambleclaw becoming deputy and stand beside him. Tigerstar and some others stood in the nursery after Poppyfrost gave birth, etc. Well, I just thought this difference was kinda weird.

I always thought it was because the Dark Forest cats were so terrible that they weren't even deigned the opportunity of seeing their loved ones again.

The afterlife is just very weird now that they complicated it.

I suppose cats going to StarClan receive a guide as a way to ease them into the afterlife without too much trauma. I'd imagine dying is pretty scary, so the presence of a deceased loved one showing them the way to StarClan would make it a more peaceful transition. I guess the lack of a guide to the Dark Forest serves as a punishment for its inhabitants.

I guess the lack of a guide to the Dark Forest serves as a punishment for its inhabitants. That actually explains it very well! It is weird though that Shadowstar did not have a guide, and Thunderstar and Lightning Tail also did not. These three just woke up in StarClan (I may be mistaken in the Thunderstar and Lightning Tail thing. It could have also been that they woke up at the place where they died but as ghosts, and Thunderstar got send back in his body because of his multiple lives, but it has been a while since I read that novella). But we can explain that with them not having invented that I guess. But it's still contradicting with the Gray Wing situation, where he woke up the place he died and still had to walk to StarClan. It's all very confusing.
