the lore is pretty inconsistent, so it kinda depends. i think the common consensus is that dead cats need alive cats to remember them in order to be in the afterlife areas of starclan, the dark forest, and the tribe of endless hunting (only applies to feathertail i think idk).

If the whole ‘living cat needs to remember’ them is true, I wonder who would be remembering Snowtuft, Mapleshade, and all the other old Dark Forest cats this whole time. Also this would mean Skywatcher saved all of dead SkyClan from vanishing.

What if, and this is a pretty big stretch, the well remembered StarClan cats remember the older/less well remembered cats for the living cats, and when they start to fade, their descendants in StarClan remember them and their memories of their dead and faded ancestors. That probably makes no sense.

Well I think it was in Fading Echoes but it was stated that once a Dark Forest spirit is not remembered by anyone, they just become shining eyes in the darkness filled with hate.

If they're forgotten by everyone, yes they do fade. I imagine that the process is very slow however as Mapleshade was able to stick around for so long.
