Was Fire x Cinder ever hinted at in the canon books? I always hear that it was but I can't ever think of any specific scenes where it was.

I don’t remember which book, but there was a very brief scene where Sandstorm and Cinderpelt both wanted to talk to Fireheart.
I think Fireheart was talking to Cinderpelt (maybe Cinderpaw?) and Sandstorm walks into the den and wanted to have fresh kill with Fireheart.
Fireheart noticed there was tension between the she cats, and I think Sandstorm was a little passive aggressive, but Fireheart didn’t realize it was because they both had a crush on him.
Other than that, I don’t remember if there were any other hints of Cinderpelt’s crush in TPB.

cinderpaw/pelt had a one sided crush on him in the first arc. fireheart is never implied to see her that way at all. cinderpelt and sandstorm did have a vague jealous spat in front of fireheart once i think? and fireheart was super oblivious to it

I think Cinderpelt’s actions in original arc can be interepted as completely platonic, former apprentice and mentor bond. But I think there is a part in The New Prophecy where Cinderpelt alludes to her true feelings, making it canon? I don’t remember, I dislike this ship a lot. Edit: it would have to be a scene in Twilight, where she confronts Leafpool about Crowfeather.

cinderpelt had a one-sided crush on him, presumably because he was her closest friend and also suggested to be quite handsome

Didn't understand until I read about it online either.
Anyway, the last time it was referred to in canon was in River of Fire, when Cinderpelt comes to Alderheart and explicitly tells him about it.

It was hinted at a bit in the first arc, to the point where it's implied that Sandstorm might've known.
This continues even after the first arc, too, like when Cinderpelt attacks Leafpool after the latter says that Cinderpelt will never understand her. Much later on when Cinderheart says that Cinderpelt had once been in love with a cat she couldn't have. And then of course, it gets outright confirmed in-universe in RoF. Honestly, Cinderpelt's love for Firestar always felt incredibly unnecessary.
