WELCOME Welcome to the Aftermath! c: This is a build-a-clan type of role-play, so there's some definite flexibility with how the plot-line goes. The main focus is on the rogue group and six remaining cats from HazelClan. There's going to be a lot of grief, sorrow, and frustration as the cats are trying to cope with their loss and the coming winter. At the same time, hopefully we can find some hope and determination as well. We don't need to make the whole thread doom and gloom all the time. Will HazelClan be rebuilt? Will the rogues run the clan-cats out? The story is up to us! INDEX i. welcome, index, joining ii. about, rules, history iii. territory, prey & predators, climate iv. traditions, news, plots v. hazelclan, rogue group, wanderers vi. relationships, members, credit

ABOUT HazelClan cats are former marshland cats. They lived in wetlands with lots of high-grasses and mud. Due to this, most felines have some sort of pattern on their coat, that formerly helped them blend in with the bushes and grass. Pure white coats are rare, the brightness of their fur gave them away easily in the marsh and prey and predators could easily see them coming. Many amongst the clan have a genetic mutation of more webbed skin between their toes, which allowed them to swim much more efficiently in the murky water. Their bodies are trained to be lean, mostly, as agility was their most treasured ability. Now that the clan has settled in a new area, there are some adaptations to be made.
- - - The rogue group that resides on the edges of the forest are all former kitty-pets. Their neighborhood was taken over by some incredibly cruel alley-cats, which made even a trip out to their gardens dangerous. So the felines banded together and left home, traveling at least a moon across forested hills until they reached the giant forest they now reside in. The trees and undergrowth grow plentiful and thick and the rogues have been forced to adapt to moving through all the foliage quietly in order to feed themselves. They're cats of all different breeds and builds, their coat colors and patterns are diverse. There really isn't a rhyme or reason to them at all. A few of them do have collars around their necks but these are also the felines who never had bells or tags.
RULES ❀ Forum rules are our rules, always.
❀ Respect is a big thing here. Treat people kindly out of character or you will be removed from the role-play. We're all just here to have fun.
❀ Keep cats realistic. No hot pink coats with rainbow eyes, please.
❀ Let's keep things PG, y'all, or as child-friendly as you can get. You never know how old someone might be.
❀ Literacy isn't too big of a deal for me. As long as you write at least 3 good sentences and it's legible, that's fine with me.
❀ Everyone has a life outside of this forum, I understand that. Please try to be as active as you can, at least twice a week or maybe more for people with higher roles within the clan. Please let me know if you need to go on a break/hiatus. If you're gone without warning for longer than two weeks, I will remove your characters but I'll keep them saved to a draft/google doc if you want to rejoin at a different time! c:
❀ God-modding, spotlighting, and power-playing aren't allowed here. This is a clan where everyone is living out their own stories, each character is a main character in their own right. Don't play other people's characters unless given express permission.
❀ You may not join with a motherless kit unless you have asked the mods beforehand and worked out a solution. Also, apprentices may not have mates or kits.
❀ Living in the wild is dangerous. Many cats are killed, succumb to illness/injury, disappear, run away, etc. Please be open to losing your characters. It keeps things new and interesting. Remember all cats die eventually and rarely of old age.
❀ LGBTQ+ characters are accepted and welcome but remember that these cats might face some opposition from other characters in the rp and usually only for the purpose of drama. We would never allow opposition to be shown OOC.
❀ Most importantly, have fun! We're all here to write together, so don't feel shy about just jumping in! <3
HISTORY It began with a single mouse. To think such a small creature could bring on such devastation. The late elders often told stories of the odd smell that wafted from the rodent - but they were merely tales. If there had been any indication that the prey was unsuitable to eat, surly Owlfoot wouldn't have shared it with his sister that night.
The next day, both warriors were out of commission. Stomach aches and violent fever. Iciclepaw - the medicine cat apprentice at the time - fell next. And he wouldn't be the last. The symptoms changed rapidly over the moons as felines took ill and died. There was no explanation and no herb combination that Galeberry could find that worked as a cure. HazelClan was facing a faceless, scentless enemy that they couldn't fight off with claws and fangs. And they were losing the battle.
After losing her third rushed apprentice, Galeberry began to lose faith in StarClan altogether. She had traveled to the Whispering Willows at least twice every moon, searching for answers from their ancestors but there was always silence. On her last trip, Galeberry finally was able to get in contact with the first leader of HazelClan and he told them to run. Run far away and leave the poisoned marshes. Terrified and bitter, the medicine cat returned to her clan and told them what she'd heard. The sickness was so horrible, so devastating that few cats put up much of a fight.
The journey began at the end of leaf-fall when there was frost and light snow covering the marsh. Dead, rotting animals lay in their wake, so few creatures had been spared. Even as they traveled, the sickness lingered within the group, infecting one cat after another. Slower, now that the prey wasn't touched with plague, but their numbers continued to dwindle. Cities, small towns, long-dead forests, rolling hills, and wide-open fields with large spotted beasts the likes of which the clan had never seen... the dying clan faced it all. And still, HazelClan headed North, away from their home.
Plumstar lost her last life in the middle of new-leaf, and Galeberry followed on the second day of green-leaf. There hadn't been a deputy since a moon after the clan left the marshes. To be frank, it could hardly be called a clan anymore, especially come that next leaf-fall. There were hardly six cats left but they'd finally found a place that held promise. Lavender fields, wide and sprawling with rocks for shelter and fresh streams for water. The remaining cats seemed to be immune to the sickness, a blessing that was far too little, too late.
That brings us up to current times. The future of HazelClan is uncertain and there isn't a lot of faith that StarClan favors them any longer. However, without hope they will not survive.

TERRITORY What remains of HazelClan has settled into a wide, overgrown lavender field. There is an abandoned two-leg cabin on the edge of the field, upon a shallow hill. Other herbs and bushes have encroached on the once orderly rows, providing not only shelter for prey but for the felines as well. Large boulders are strewn throughout the field, some sitting all alone - probably placed there by a two-leg seasons ago - and others huddled in a much more natural outcropping. The largest of these rock formations, and the most protected by far, is where the tattered remains of HazelClan make their camp.
To the west, is a large and lush deciduous forest, that the clan considers loosely as part of their territory - seeing as there is no actual boundaries at this time. There are a group of rogues that make their home in these woods, however, unknown to HazelClan. Wide streams that lead into a large lake to the southwest, flow within, providing both fresh water and places to fish. An abandoned two-leg cabin is where the rogues currently make their camp, hidden deeply in the trees and almost overrun in ivy and brush. The undergrowth is very thick in the forest, so it can be difficult to navigate, even for the rogues who've been living here for a few moons now.
-- quick note ; the clan is still settling in and the rogues haven't been here too long, so the territory is still being discovered! if you have an idea for a new landmark in either area, speak up and we'll discuss as a group, before possibly adding it! we're building this together! c:
❀ Lavender Field Landmarks - High-Rocks ; Specific boulders at the north-eastern edge of the territory that are stacked high and set upon a hill, altogether elevated. A good look-out spot near their hesitantly-placed eastern border and climbing to the top can allow some privacy for conversations. The clan is currently using it as a place to get some space, to be alone and grieve. The rocks get an excellent amount of sunlight and have the potential for a future sunning spot.
- Herb Pond ; Just to the south of the High Rocks, is a small pond that sits alone, abundant with reeds and water-based herbs. The waters are murky and there is evidence that ducks nest here in new-leaf, so there's hope for more prey opportunities. Though the water doesn't taste the best, the cats are using this and the small creek that runs by the abandoned two-leg nest for drinking water. If brave, a feline could attempt to catch a fish here.
- The Old Two-leg Nest ; Further north, at the edge of the lavender field is where the dilapidated old two-leg cabin sits. The wood is rotting in most places and the roof has caved and fallen in, leaving the inside exposed to the elements. Great source of both catmint and cobwebs. Mice are easily caught here but rats are a very real danger. Outside a small creek can be found that yields much clearer water than the Herb Pond.
- The Rabbit Tunnels ; One of the first discoveries in what HazelClan hopes will be their new home, are the holes that appear all over the field. With observation, they were discovered to be a network of rabbit tunnels and burrows, that run underneath the ground. The felines have begun to try and set traps beside these holes, in order to more easily catch rabbits, and there is some talk about trying to dig into a few tunnels to make more shelter or secret passages.
- Bramble Wall ; A thick, intimidating wall of brambles that runs the perimeter of the forest to the west. Though they had originally used this as a pseudo-border in the past, the remaining clan cats have decided to edge farther into the forest - especially with leaf-bare coming. So now it's a barrier they've worked holes into for easier access to the forest.
- Red Orchard ; To the north-west of the lavender field, after a few fox-lengths of grassy clearing, is a small copse of apple trees that have grown tall, clearly left untended for many years. The clan-cats haven't really explored this area yet, only glimpsing the orchard from time to time but the brilliant red color of the leaves in leaf-bare earned the copse it's name. There's potential food there but the reek of the Thunder-Path that lies around it makes the felines wary.
❀ Forest Landmarks
- Abandoned Burrow ; In the western side of the forest, amongst the undergrowth, is a hidden entrance to an abandoned badger den - from what the rogues can tell. They're a bit wary of the lingering scents of the fierce black and white creatures but prey sometimes hides down there. Since it's mostly blocked in, with only one exit and entrance, this can make hunting easier. If a feline is seeking privacy, this is a good place to get away from it all.
- The Lightning Oak ; Up into the north of the forest, the rogues have found a tree that has been split and burned by lightning in two places - almost as though the lightning struck the oak twice - hence it's nickname. Birds are easily caught here, along with smaller rodents. Younger or smaller cats are told to be aware of owls and not to wander in the area alone.
- Winding Path ; An old hiking trail, that's well worn and runs through the northeastern side of the forest, close to the lavender fields. The rogues have found herbs along the path and rabbits are seen most often here. Deer and elk are more common in this area as well and the rogues are cautious of their hooves and antlers.
- The Log Bridge ; There are many streams that run throughout the forest, some leading to Gray Lake and others to the Thunder-River to the south. The biggest of these streams, has a distinct log-bridge made from the trunk of a fallen maple. The tree trunk is wide enough that two cats can walk together side by side but the bark is slick with moss. The rogues have found it challenging to cross, especially after rain, but it's the quickest path to the Lightning Oak. The stream it crosses over is a good supply of fish and even frogs.
- The Thorn Circle ; Aptly named, for it's a small, circular hollow that is enclosed by thistle, rose, and hemlock bushes. The center is a great place for small rodents to hide and quite a few herbs can be found here. The Thorn Circle is located in the east, about seven bear-lengths from the southern edge of the Bramble Wall.
- Gray Lake ; In the southwest of the forest, some of the streams empty into a small, natural lake. The water is normally gray-hued, hence the nickname the rogues have given it. The water gets deep relatively quickly so only good swimmers are recommended to fish here. The shore has lots of long, flat rocks that make great places for felines to sun-bathe. Snakes are more common in the reeds and among the rocks here.
❀ Lavender Field Camp -- The HazelClan refugees are settled into the largest of the natural rocky outcroppings and also the most protected. Near the heart of the lavender fields, sharp, jagged rock peaks rise out of the sea of purple flowers and thick green brush. The circular hollow created by the tallest rocks provides shelter from the elements and some protection from predators. The walls of the hollow, between rock, are made from thick bushes and thickets that grow high. The group is still settling in and sleep mostly piled together for warmth, safety, and comfort. At this time there has been no talk of dens.
❀ Rogue Camp [forest] -- In the abandoned forest two-leg cabin that reminds them of home, the former kitty-pets have made their camp. There are holes in the walls to allow cats in and out, and a lot of the two doors have rotted and fallen over. This lets in a draft that the rogues aren't too adjusted to. There are still some closed rooms, but the doors and hinges are getting weaker every day, so there's a chance that they'll be exposed soon, giving the felines more space and possible shelter from the elements.
❀ Neutral Landmarks (landmarks that exist just outside the main territory but are still important)
- The Thunder-River ; To the south of both territories is a wide river. The current is fast moving and the water is deep, which is already off-putting. Swimming against the current isn't an easy task and unless a skilled swimmer, felines are likely to drown. There are aquatic two-leg monsters that zip by from time to time. The Thunder-River is something the felines usually avoid altogether if they can help it.
- The Thunder-Path ; On the other end of the spectrum, to the north of both territories, is a long thunder-path. Monsters pass by more often than not, which can make for tricky passing. Rats and bad smelling water are common here, but so is a large supply of dandelion and yarrow.
- ( future ) Moon Grove ; Our future spot to communicate with our ancestors. A small grove of trees that smell like fresh dew at all times and reflect moonlight brilliantly, until their leaves appear white and their trunks silver-hued. Water drips between their roots, and the drops look like stars when light reflects off of them.

TRADITIONS Apprentice Competitions - One of the first traditions to be instilled within HazelClan, during Dovestar's reign. When there are many apprentices at once, mentors will have competitions as opportunities to have their apprentices use their training and to show off their teaching to other mentors. Winners of these competitions can get a few days off from chores or if the apprentice is near the end of their apprenticeship, it can mean an early warrior ceremony - skipping any official assessments. These competitions can include mock-battle, hunting, climbing, tracking, and races.
Communion with Ancestors - The newest of the traditions, set in place by Graystar. As a cat who trained as both a warrior and a medicine cat, he was deeply spiritual and tried to instill that faith deeper within the clan. All cats, when first apprenticed, are expected to share tongues with StarClan. The medicine cats often try to use this to find their next apprentice. By having each apprentice meet with StarClan, they could see who had the best aptitude. It is a way to not only test the young cat's aptitude for spirituality but to receive early advice and encouragement from their ancestors and strengthen their belief in the code.
Queen's Claim - When kits are born, queens are expected to either state who the father is or claim a "queens silence". Should silence be claimed, no cat is permitted to pester the queen about the father or spread rumors/gossip. This stems from a time during Swiftstar's reign, when a parental dispute and vicious rumors caused the death of a queen and her kits, unjustly. Punishments for violations of a queen's right to silence usually involve being put on apprentice duties.
Test of Resolve - On the rare occasion that an outsider was allowed to join the clan in the past, they would be put through tests to make sure they are dedicated. This included being put on a patrol with a clanmate who would suggest breaking the code in some way (passed by the outsider refusing to do so), having them patrol the border alone under the secret watch of a warrior to make sure they complete their duties properly, and communion with StarClan.

PLOTS ❀ Main Plot - As leaf-bare approaches, the surviving HazelClan cats are struggling to settle into their home, which is still relatively new to them. Prey is much more difficult to attain and the clan-cats are terrified of any sickness that might befall. Partly out of trauma from the plague that wiped out the rest of their clan but also because their medicine cats are long dead and there is little herb knowledge within the group. In desperation, HazelClan tries to journey deeper into the forest, searching for prey or even potential medicine. What they find is a rogue group that's already settled in the forest. How will the two groups - both struggling for survival - get along or will the fear of starvation and illness cause a war?
❀ Minor Plots
- Loss of Faith ; As former clan cats, their belief in StarClan is vital to their way of life. However, after the devastation the group has faced, the remaining six are really struggling to hold onto that faith in their ancestors. Why would StarClan wipe out almost their whole clan and run them out of their former marsh territory? It's definitely going to be a struggle to rebuild that strong belief system within a formerly spiritual clan.
- Rising Tensions ; The rogues are struggling for a sense of normalcy. There is no clear leader amongst the group and that's causing a lot of in-fighting. Someone needs to step up to the plate but none of the cats can agree on the best leader for them.
- [ ideas are always welcome, please feel free to plot with us! c: ]

Aaaand I think that's everything sorted! c: We're open!
Hollowpaw with open the herb pond @ Tag
The water was ice cold to the touch, it's murky depths closing around the tom's dense fur as he dove bellow the surface. His ears ached instantly from the low temperature and his eyes stung as he forced them open, catching the faintest flash of silver. Even in mid-morning, the sun's weak rays barely penetrated the pond water, an unideal condition for fishing. Hollowpaw had experienced the worst luck this morning as he set out to find prey and he refused to return to their pseudo-camp without something. Even if that meant freezing his whiskers off.
So instead of returning to the surface, Hollowpaw swam down further, his large paws propelling him through the water a bit clumsily. The clan had left their marsh home when he was but a kit and there had been little chance for swimming lessons as they traveled. Normally a HazelClan cat of his age would have been a pro at gliding through the water - but then again, most cats his age hadn't been forced to leave their home. His claws grazed the slick scales of a fish and he struggled to lunch at the prey, ending up with a mouthful of poor tasting water. His lungs were beginning to burn, he'd been under too long. With supreme reluctance the gray-brown and white tabby surfaced.
Instantly the cool breeze touched his face and his eyes watered helplessly. With quick movements, the tom was able to swim back to the edge of the pond and haul himself up among the tall grass, his fur clinging to his build. Tremors that he couldn't subdue wrecked havoc on his body as he padded away from the water a few steps, his tail lashing behind him. His amber eyes were narrowed and he let out a shuddering growl, resisting the urge to scream curses at the sky. Hollowpaw would not return to the group without prey, that wasn't an option. The other five were probably just as hungry as he was and he didn't want them to suffer.
"F-fox-d-dung!" he snarled, or attempted to through his shivering. He whipped back around furiously and eyed the frigid water. There had to be other fish. Which meant he had to go back into the pond... Wonderful.
Zorro with open in camp @ Tag
Even his thick, fluffy fur couldn't block out the chill of the draft that made its way through the dilapidated twoleg nest. His long black tail swept the rotting wooden floor behind him as Zorro uncurled himself from the circle position he'd chosen to sleep in. Dull, watery light fell across the main room, where he'd settled last night after a successful hunt with Valentine. It had been an interesting exercise in patience - getting the lazier tom to engage and go out into the freezing night. In the end, the two of them had brought home a few pieces each to add to the pile and Zorro had taken the success.
His mouth opened in a wide, pink yawn before the tom hauled himself to his paws. A bit of anxiety had begun to fester in his gut, an inner voice warning him that he slept too long. Zorro cast a glance at the spot where they normally keep their prey, relaxing when he saw it still appeared at least half-full. An impressive feat for the nearness to winter - the tom had to admit, especially with over half of the group still trying to get used to wild food.
Taking a step towards the center of the room, the tom became aware of the constant ache in his left shoulder. The gruesome scars that lingered there could still be seen through the patch of fur that had just begun to grow back. Alley-cats. After nearly three moons his wound still troubled him, an annoyance that tried desperately to ignore. If he limped a bit in the evening after a long day on his paws - well, that was to be expected. Lotus was surely trying his best to help and Zorro didn't mind humoring the other rogue's fascination with herbs. After all, what could it hurt?
Jellybean with open the lightning oak @ Tag
There was no real rhyme or reason to the way Jellybean slid through the undergrowth, her paws trampling the damp grass and defrosting ferns with reckless abandon. It was safe to say that the molly's mind had drifted off, centered around daydreams of sunny window spots and warm blankets. Anything but this insistent cold. As a former house-cat, this would be her first winter out in the wild. The thought was more than a little terrifying. How did stray cats do it? The siamese molly couldn't fathom sleeping in the snow or trying to find prey. Already the forest grew slower, providing less and less successful hunting opportunities. Jellybean had never been starving before.
So lost in her own head, the molly nearly stumbled directly into a tree that sat in her path. Those round bluish gray eyes of hers widened almost comically, peering at her surroundings desperately for some sort of familiar landmark. She couldn't get lost out here, the forest was so big! Beginning to feel a bit frantic, Jellybean rushed to her right, mouth open to catch any indication of her own scent trail. As she pushed through some browning bushes, her attention was drawn to the splintered tree just off to the left. The Lightning Oak! A sigh of relief escaped her maw as she trailed over to sit amongst the odd tree's roots, trying to catch her breath and settle her racing heart.
Pixie with open Location @ Tag
The harsh, acrid scent of the thunder-path lie heavy in the air. She could just see the gruesome gray stone path from her hiding place amongst the ferns. Her stomach gave an uncomfortable twist, trying not to remember the prone body of her mother. Pixie hated thunder-paths - they'd taken away Clover quicker than the young molly could blink. Bright green eyes slid to the forest beyond the asphalt, curiosity tugging at her paws. To try and cross or not to cross, that was the question.

Ashbellyw/ Hollowpaw at the herb pondlittle blu ♥Ashbelly listened as Hollowpaw made his fruitless attempts at fishing- they had followed the tom here and heard him splashing about, and then his angry curse. It was rather obvious what was happening. While many HazelClan cats might be able to snag something by themself, the apprentice had never had the chance to be trained properly, and so Ashbelly stood, carefully approaching. Back in HazelClan’s old territory, outsiders and new kits took a while to figure out that Ashbelly couldn’t see them. They knew every pawstep of land better than the hairs in their own pelt, and had become adept at navigating without sight. Here, though, it was more obvious from the way their tail slipped about, their whiskers twitching and jaws parting to taste the air, their ears pricked and swiveling. It was wholly unfamiliar land, and without Nightflower to help guide them, Ashbelly felt even more anxious. ”Mind if I join?” Ashbelly was careful not to phrase it as an offer for help. The last thing Hollowpaw needed was for their confidence to be trod on. But another paw would certainly make this easier for them, even if it was just showing Hollowpaw an easier technique. The less time the apprentice spent in the cold water, the better. Lotusw/ Zorro at camplittle blu ♥“Still aching?” Lotus had been getting in some morning stretches and meditation when he had seen Zorro get up, and it was fairly obvious that his wound was still bothering him. Lotus had done his best so far with the wound, and Zorro had been surprisingly patient with the rather experimental treatments, but the results were rather limited so far. Still, he refused to give up. “I found some burnet the other day. I recall Lily saying it was good for strength, though I’m not exactly sure he told me what context to use it in.” Lotus continued, a confused look crossing his face. Lily had taught him a lot in the short time they were together, but it was hard to retain so much information so quickly- and that wasn’t even mentioning that most of the things herbs he was taught were water-based, not the kind that grew in the forest- so he was left guessing quite a bit. “You should stay off that, though. If you keep pushing yourself, it’s going to open back up.”

Hollowpaw with Ashbelly the herb pond @ cable So caught up in his frustration, Hollowpaw didn't notice Ashbelly's approach until the blind warrior was merely a few paw-steps away. His large head jerked to the side, watching as the older feline carefully approached. A pang of grief settled in his chest as he watched their wary movements, those black ears twitching and tail twitching. "Hey," he greeted, as a subtle aid to help his clan-mate locate him better. Hollowpaw resisted the urge to place his tail upon Ashbelly's shoulders, unsure how his assistance would be received. Especially since the last cat to guide the warrior so had been their mate and the sorrow was still fresh. Plus, he was still soaked through to the bone and his wet tail would probably not be welcome.
At their suggestion, his amber gaze settled back on the murky pond water, claws scraping at the damp ground beneath his paws. His foolish pride urged him to reject Ashbelly, worried about the older cat noticing how absolutely useless at fishing he was. At the end of the day, the group needed more prey though, which meant that more paws might be useful. Plus, the black and gray feline might even be able to show him a better technique. "Yeah, sure. I was attempting to fish. The water is freezing though, fair warning," he replied finally, trying to inject some humor into the situation. Hollowpaw dutifully shuffled over to the water's edge, peering down into the gloom. He really did not want to go back in the greenish-brown water. His pelt felt so heavy that the tom half-believed he would sink right to the bottom.
Zorro with Lotus in camp @ cable Silky black ears perked right up at the sound of Lotus' voice, his light green gaze flashing over to settle on the slightly older tom. He couldn't suppress the heavy sigh as he nodded his head in affirmation, his pelt prickling with embarrassment at being caught showing such weakness. Zorro, even from a young age, had always been the type to face problems head-on and to try and shoulder the weight of the world. So, the fact that he needed help was a bitter thorn in his side that just kept digging in.
Still, Lotus had been an integral part of their group so far, his (limited) knowledge of herbs useful. Zorro found that he didn't mind the idea of being the lilac tom's guinea pig if it meant that he'd be more effective at healing others in the future. "Burnet, huh? Spirits know I could use some strength," he commented, shifting his weight so that his left forepaw was lifted off the ground. Perhaps Lotus was right... The one day of rest he'd taken after they arrived at the forest had done his shoulder some good. He just worried about the upcoming winter and all lives that he felt depended on him. Not officially of course.
Those light green eyes nearly rolled at the thought of the current arguments over leadership within the group. To be honest, Zorro had never considered the role for himself but after a few nominations from the group, he didn't want to let anyone down. Whether he led them or a squirrel did, someone needed to take charge and keep things organized - that was for sure. "I know you're right, there's just so much to do. Staying idle all day might just kill me," Zorro admitted with a dull laugh, shaking his head at himself. ( Sorry about the delay, Thistle! c: )

(its fine!) Ashbellyw/ Hollowpaw at herb pondlittle blu ♥Ashbelly’s ears swiveled towards Hollowpaw as he spoke, their steps moving into a more consfident stride as the ground smoothed out beneath their paws. They felt appreciative for the assistance, but immediately squashed the thought down when it brought Nightflower to mind. “You have a lot of fur,” Ashbelly said, thinking of all the times they’ve brushed past each other, “And it’s fluffy, not sleek. So it’ll weigh you down. You’re not going to be able to out-swim a fish. You’d have better luck waiting at the shore to hook them.” They padded around the pond until they found a shady spot where reeds had crooked over the water- immediately noticeable from how much cooler it felt- sitting down demonstratively. “The reeds will hide my shadow, so as long as I’m not leaning over the water, they won’t realize I’m here. You can pick them out when they’re close to the edge of the water.” Ashbelly curled their tail around their hind paws, keeping their front right splayed out, just before the water. The water was more shallow near the shore, and as the fish fought for space, they made small splashes. Ashbelly shot a paw out at the sound, feeling their claws hook into scales. They could tell it was a small one from the weight, hardly enough to feed even a young apprentice, but anything was welcome right now, and at least it served to demonstrate. They killed it quickly, before returning their attention to Hollowpaw. “Fishing is harder for me, since fish don’t make much noise until they bunch together. You’ll probably do better, since you can see them. They scatter when you catch one, but as long as you avoid hunching over where they can see you, they’ll come back quickly. They’re not terrible bright.” Lotusw/ Zorro at camplittle blu ♥“You’re the most eager cat here to choke down whatever plants I put in front of you.” Lotus sighed, shaking his head, but there was an amused look on his face. “Cats are going to think you’re eager to shuffle off this mortal coil.” After a brief moment of silence, he spoke again. ”You need to trust them more. You can’t carry us all on your shoulders. Most of us can hunt on our own. With a little more organization, I’m sure other cats could feed the entire group while you take the rest you need. Because I’ll tell you, Zorro, you keep going the way you are, you’re not going to be alive to help them soon enough.” Lotus snorted as he finished, watching the other tom through narrowed eyes. As long as Lotus had known Zorro, the rogue had always been working like somebody had set his tail on fire- running out to catch prey, returning, then back out to find more. Always willing to be the one fighting if it came down to it, and the last to run away. He needed to relax, before they were left without their most popular option for leader.
