โOh,โ Orpheus replied, although he didnโt actually understand at all. He had heard of binary, though he didnโt actually know what it was beyond some sort of mythical computer language. The fact that there were other languages that you had to use in order to communicate with the computer which used computer languageโฆ it was confusing. It didnโt fit in his head the same way music did. Binary, with all its ones and zeroes, had a certain element of rhythm, which Orpheus thought he could understand if he paid it enough attention for long enough. It was similar enough to music that he could see himself trying it. Other programming languages seemedโฆ well, he didnโt know anything about them, but they seemed complicated. โYouโre really smart,โ he said after a moment, giving L a small smile. He meant it as a compliment, of course, but he was also just telling the truth how he saw it. L understood a lot of complicated things that Orpheus didnโt understand, and he talked about it so casually that Orpheus wasnโt certain he really knew how smart he was. โMusic is like that, too,โ he added, giving a small shrug. โI meanโฆ you have to use certain notes to make a chord, and if you donโt use the right one then it sounds wrong and sometimes it can even make you feel it physically, but in a bad way. And all you have to do is figure out which note is wrong and then you can make it better again.โ

L had never thought of binary as musical before. Computers made sense to him in a way a lot of other things didnโt, so teaching himself programming hadnโt been difficult enough for him to look for ways to make it easier. It had been funโฆalways having something new to find, knowing exactly how to keep from getting bored each day. He almost missed it. Of course, it had also been tedious to learn it. Hacking was far more exciting, and you could only really do that once you mastered the language itself. โI know,โ he told him, leaning back from the vent a little to see him better. โI have a really high IQ, one of the highest Watari has ever seen. Thatโs why I am.โ He wasnโt meaning to brag. He was proud of his IQ, but so far, Orpheus seemed nice. He didnโt want to set himself apart from him. He almost thought it might be nice to be his friend. He listened attentively as the other kid spoke, eyes widening a little at the mention of music. โReally? I didnโt know that. I know about bad sounds that make you feel wrong. But I didnโt know that could happen in music by accident.โ

Orpheus gave a small smile as L talked. He didnโt know exactly what an IQ was, only that it was something that made some people really smart. It made sense that Lโs IQ was high, because he was smart. Orpheus had a feeling his own would be significantly lower. He wasnโt sure he cared - he had plenty to be proud of without considering if he was smart enough. He was smart enough to learn music, and smart enough to make Mr. Hermes proud, and that was enough for him. The vent and the conversation below completely forgotten, Orpheus leaned forward so he could hear L better and be heard without having to raise his voice and get them discovered. โWhat kinds of things do you have to know to have a high IQ?โ Orpheus asked, tilting his head. โI meanโฆ there are things you need to know and skills you need to have to be good at a musical instrument, but itโs all stuff you can learn. I think itโs probably not quite so easy to learn how to have a high IQ. Itโs something you just have or you donโt have, right?โ Orpheus shook the thought off, putting his attention on Lโs other question. โHave you ever listened to a song and it made you sad? Itโs because of how the chords work together. And if they donโt work together in the right way, you get the wrong sort of emotion and then the song doesnโt tell the story you mean it to.โ

L was too focused on Orpheus now to think about eavesdropping. It might have been interesting to try and figure out how the two adults knew each other, but the other kid seemed even more interesting, if not more so. Even though it was quickly becoming clear that the two of them were very different people. โWellโฆitโs a little bit more complicated than that,โ he replied thoughtfully, tilting his head a little as he considered the question. โPeople naturally have higher or lower IQs, which is why thereโs an average range. So if you justโฆmade everyone take the test, they would get a lot of different scores. But sometimes different tests give you different answers or you get a score thatโs in the middle or it changes when you get olderโฆI guess you could cheat on the test, too. I thought about it, but Watari made me promise not to twice.โ He made a face for a second, then shook his head a little to clear it again. โI never really thought about how that works,โ he admitted, his voice a little softer as they moved into less familiar territory. โItโs justโฆsounds, but not. How do you tell what emotion you're going to make someone feel? Do chords ever make different people feel different things?โ
