L Lawliet wasn't looking out the window. He could have been. There was a window that looked where he needed it to. But he could be seen through windows, so he was standing with his back to a wall, out of sight and using a mirror to watch the door.

The knock made L catch his breath, but he didn't flinch. It just meant the thing he'd been thinking about nonstop since he'd been told it would happen was now happening. He briefly went over the things he'd wanted to keep to himself, but his door was locked, so they were safe. It didn't take Watari long to open the door and greet the guests, though L couldn't hear exactly what he was saying, besides the usual hellos.

L watched the mirror, suddenly glad that he wasn't also reflected in it. He didn't know how he felt about this. Visitors were bad enough, but they were at least exciting...he knew they would leave and things would be normal again. But these people weren't ever going to leave. He saw the other kid, holding the man's hand and looking at Watari. He looked...smaller than L had expected.

L could tell the other kid wasn't listening to the conversation. Or if he was...he was also looking for something else. So he probably knew there was someone else here, then. That probably meant there was no avoiding him. L considered hiding, but he felt that he shouldn't be the one to do that in his own home. He'd been here first, hadn't he? He poked his head out, trying to get a better look at the kid.

L blinked, eyes widening as the kid shifted, clearly seeing him. He was waving...that was friendly, right? He looked...somehow much nicer than L had expected him to. He hadn't even realized he'd had any expectations. He hesitated, trying to decide whether waving would make it harder to stay neutral later, then tentatively raised a hand back.

L didn't know how to navigate this. He had the vague idea that he needed to keep his options open, especially at first, but he wasn't sure that that meant in practice. If he was willing to talk to him now, would that mean he would have to talk to him again later? He was probably overthinking it. The other kid let go of the adult. L's eyes flicked to his hand, then back to his face for a moment, before he gave a tiny nod and ducked behind the wall again.

Was this a bad idea? This felt like a bad idea. But then, so did avoiding him, so there wasn't anything L could do about that. He waited, forgetting to back away from the corner to give the other kid more space when he rounded it. Maybe he wouldn't come, anyway. Maybe he planned to ignore L. Maybe L should - And then, very suddenly, there he was. L's eyes widened, and he was abruptly very aware of his mistake. Orpheus was about an inch from his face.

L blinked, failing to move back, though he was just as surprised as Orpheus was. He should have known that Orpheus would need to turn the corner in order to approach. On some level, he had. But he'd failed to connect that theoretical knowledge with the practical knowledge that he needed to move back. After a moment, he too stepped back, rubbing the back of his neck as he realized Orpheus may have thought he'd done it on purpose. "Hello. I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to trick you," he said finally, lowering his voice slightly more than he usually did so that it would be Orpheus' first impression of him, and therefore how he would think about it later. "My name is L. Watari told me you were going to come here."

L watched, eyes searching as Orpheus took another small step back. He didn’t care how much space was between them, personally, so he didn’t move. He assumed Orpheus would, if Orpheus was uncomfortable. He ducked his head a little, putting his hands in his pockets. It wasn’t that he needed Orpheus to like him…it would probably be easier if he didn’t, actually. If Orpheus ignored him, he’d have an excuse to ignore Orpheus back, and maybe nothing would really have to change at all. But he didn’t quite know what he should say. Or why he’d allowed Orpheus to approach in the first place. He probably should have just stayed hidden. “Watari said you’re going to stay as long as you both wish,” he told him, eyeing the ground, and Orpheus’ shoes. “Is that true?”

Orpheus blinked, frowning just a little bit at the question. He didn’t know if it would be rude to admit that he didn’t want to be there at all, but he wasn’t good at lying. He could just… not mention it… but that felt a little bit dishonest, too. “I’m here as long as Mr. Hermes wishes to stay here,” he said after a moment, deciding that was the truest way he could say that. It wasn’t inaccurate. “I mean… if I really, really hate it here, Mr. Hermes might consider leaving sooner, but… it’s really about him. As long as I’m not suffering tremendously…” he looked down, cheeks flushing red as he realized what he had said. If L were the kind of kid who liked picking at other kids’ weaknesses, Orpheus had just given him the keys to his destruction. He had to hope that L wasn’t the kind of kid who took pleasure in hurting others. Even if he wasn’t… if he didn’t want Orpheus and Hermes there, how far would he go to get rid of them? Suddenly uncomfortable, Orpheus took another small step back. He wanted to be friends with L. He didn’t want the other boy to feel like he had to bully him away. Maybe they’d even get used to each other…

L didn’t know how he felt about this, really. He didn’t want things to change, and he didn’t like the idea having to share everything, even Watari, with someone else. It wasn’t personal - how could he dislike someone personally when he’d never met them - but the truth was, he didn’t want this to happen. Watari had made it clear that he couldn’t stop it, though. He had seemed to imply that both Hermes and Orpheus had control over it, but… He focused on Orpheus suddenly, intense dark eyes very wide as he did. “What if you’re medium suffering?” He asked carefully. He noticed the other kid take another step back, but he didn’t think to connect it with him feeling uncomfortable. People were odd about space sometimes. Was it possible that Orpheus hadn’t wanted this to happen, either? “Do you want to be here?” He added, not blinking.

“Medium suffering?” Orpheus asked, eyes widening a little bit. He wasn’t sure if that was a threat, but from the genuine way L was looking at him… he found he didn’t believe it was. It was just an honest question. Or maybe that was just Orpheus being idealistic. If that was the case… it didn’t matter. He wasn’t going to stop being idealistic just because his new housemate turned out to be mean. That would be like letting a bully win, and that was the last thing Orpheus wanted to do. He was going to remain hopeful. He was going to retain his belief in humanity. “I guess… as long as I’m not actively in danger, and as long as it won’t really hurt me in the long run, then… Mr. Hermes believes that I can push through it. So if I’m medium suffering, then I guess I just have to stay here and try to do my best not to let it get to me. If Mr. Hermes believes that being here is for the best… then he’s probably right.” Which wasn’t to say that Orpheus never questioned Mr. Hermes, it just meant that he had accepted he didn’t really get a say in this. “Honestly?” Orpheus asked, frowning a bit as he searched L’s expression. “I liked where I lived before. I liked when it was just me and Mr. Hermes. But… we move around a lot. I guess… I don’t really want to be here. Sorry.”

L listened, taking that in. He understood, he thought…Watari had implied the same thing. L may not have liked this, but as long as it wasn’t bad for him, he was supposed to deal with it anyway. He didn’t think it made Watari or Hermes cruel. He just resented being pushed into things he hadn’t said he wanted to do. Maybe Orpheus did, too. He actually felt a little bit better about the kid, knowing that he hadn’t wanted this, either. It made it less his fault that L’s space was being invaded. “Why are you saying sorry to me?” He asked, blinking a little as the words registered. He had asked. If he hadn’t wanted to know, he wouldn’t have done that. He didn’t see why he would be offended by the answer. “I don’t really want you to be here, either,” he added, relaxing a tiny bit. “You or Mr. Hermes. But Watari said that you’re our guests and it’s my job as a host not to make you uncomfortable on purpose or try to make you go away on purpose.”

Orpheus blushed a little, staring at the ground for a moment before he looked back up at L. “I guess… I’m apologizing because me not wanting to be here has nothing to do with you. And I don’t want you to think it does. I don’t… really know anything about you, and you seem nice enough already. Actually… if you don’t mind me saying… I think you’re one of the only reasons I’m kind of excited to be here. I’ve never really known any other kids my age, so I’ve never really had friends, and if we don’t hate each other, even if neither of us likes what’s happening… maybe…” he trailed off, face reddening more. He wouldn’t take back what he said. He didn’t regret it, even if he was coming on a little too strong at first. “Are… you going to do what Mr. Watari says?” Orpheus asked after a moment, eyes widening. “I mean… I guess I’d probably prefer it if you didn’t do anything to make me want to leave on purpose, but… if we really, really don’t like each other, or if this is really, really bad for either you or me and Mr. Hermes and Mr. Watari don’t believe us… then you could try to make me leave on purpose. Cause that would be proof that it’s not working.”

L blinked, though the explanation made sense to him. It was more a clarification than an apology, then. That fit in his head better, anyway. “I didn’t think it was because of me,” he told him. “But that means that I should say that it’s also not because of you.” His eyes widened a little as Orpheus continued. He didn’t doubt that Orpheus meant it. He also didn’t mind it, because as far as he was concerned, it was just Orpheus saying what he thought, and that was what L was doing, too. “I don’t have any friends, either,” he told him. “If we don’t hate each other…then it would be okay if we spent time together. Is that what you meant?” He hesitated a long moment, searching Orpheus’ gaze. “I haven’t decided yet,” he said finally, looking down again. “But if you hate it here, and I want you to go away, then we could work together to make you and Mr. Hermes leave. Also it’s just Watari, not Mr. Watari.”

“Oh,” Orpheus replied, brows raising for a moment in pleased surprise. He hadn’t wanted to make L think he didn’t like him. He didn’t know him, and he hadn’t actually been told anything, so there was no way to dislike him. Besides, it took a lot to get Orpheus to dislike a person. They had to be a really bad person to make it happen. Orpheus couldn’t actually think of a single person he disliked, and he had met plenty of people. Of course most of the people he knew were just acquaintances, so they hadn’t had a chance to do anything that Orpheus could dislike them for, but the point still stood. He didn’t think L was going to do anything worthy of actually disliking him. “Yes, that’s what I meant,” he whispered, voice fragile. He didn’t want to ruin whatever was forming between him and L. He wasn’t naïve enough to believe that it was already friendship, but at the very least… they were allies in this. If L really wanted Orpheus gone, then chances were that Orpheus wasn’t going to want to spend time with L either. “It should be a mutual decision, though. Either way. We shouldn’t spend lots of time together if only one of us likes the other. And you shouldn’t have to try to get rid of me if only one of us really wants this to end.”

L disliked plenty of the people he’d met in his life. It seemed to be easier to make enemies than friends, as a rule…though he didn’t have many of those, either. He didn’t like most of Watari’s friends, but he didn’t really know anyone his own age, and he kept to himself. People would have to seek him out for him to notice them enough to dislike them. Of course, being sought out was also a reason for him to dislike someone. He gave a small nod. If he didn’t hate spending time with Orpheus, he didn’t have any reason to avoid it. It was still unnerving this…change. It meant he wouldn’t be able to do what he normally did, and it meant he didn’t know what was going to happen, and he didn’t like that. But Orpheus seemed mostly separate from that, somehow. “I agree,” he replied, eyes serious as he stared back at Orpheus. “And that means we should always tell each other the truth. Sometimes people lie to each other to stop them from feeling bad, and you can’t do that. Okay? And then if you don’t want to leave then I promise I won’t try to make you.”

Orpheus had a feeling that most of the people he had met were good people. Hermes met with a lot of people. Mostly people that were travelling, or people that had a destination and had gotten lost. Often those people were confused, but they had good stories. Orpheus had made a game out of turning their stories into songs. Of course… they had all left by the time the songs were done. Orpheus had dreams sometimes about finding the people whose stories he had taken inspiration from. He dreamed of playing their song and seeing the way their expressions changed. He dreamed that they told him he had captured the emotions perfectly, or that they offered adjustments that weren’t terribly difficult to make. It had never happened for real, but Orpheus believed it might, one day. “I’m a really bad liar,” Orpheus admitted, cheeks turning pink. “I think even if I tried to lie to you to make you feel better, you’d be able to tell. Mr. Hermes can tell. I’m sure most other people can, too. Mr. Wa… uh… Watari can probably tell, too. He’s an adult. They’re good at reading things. But anyway, I promise I won’t try to make you feel better by lying.”

L couldn’t imagine moving around as much as Watari had told him Mr. Hermes and Orpheus did. He liked knowing where he was going to be and what was going to happen. He didn’t think he’d have liked it if his home kept being a different place all the time. But Orpheus didn’t seem like he’d hated it. Maybe he wasn’t going to stay here, either. Maybe this was just temporary the way all the other places had been. He decided to be careful not to think this was going to be forever, in case it wasn’t. “Oh,” he said, eyes widening a little in surprise as Orpheus spoke. He stared at him for a moment, choosing how to respond. “That’s okay,” he said at last, and gave a small nod. “I can lie really well, but Watari always knows because he’s psychic. That’s probably why Mr. Hermes can tell, too.”

Orpheus blinked, a tiny smile touching his lips as he looked at L. The two of them were already getting along better than Orpheus had feared. He had heard that kids could be mean sometimes, and he didn’t want to find out that L was mean the first time he met him. He didn’t want to end up having to live with someone who turned out to be mean. L seemed… well, Orpheus couldn’t say for sure if he was nice, but he could tell already that he wasn’t mean. Which was a better start than he had allowed himself to consider. Although Orpheus was rarely a pessimist, he hadn’t allowed himself to be too hopeful this time. This was possibly a permanent change, and Orpheus had no way of knowing if other kids his age would like him at all. Adults often said he was precocious, which felt like slang for ‘not likely to get along with other kids his age.’ “I think Mr. Hermes can tell with me just cause I’m really bad at it. But maybe he’s psychic, too. I… don’t know. I guess we’ll find out if you ever lie to Mr. Hermes and he figures it out.”

L had been told that this would happen beforehand, so he’d been able to think about what it might be like for a while. He had tried to get Watari to tell him what Orpheus would be like, especially, but Watari had seemed resistant to the questions. His answers had always been too vague to be much use. He’d said it was because he didn’t really know Orpheus, but L didn’t think that was it. If he didn’t know Orpheus, he wouldn’t have invited him to live here. He had wanted to hack into Hermes’ email, but he hadn’t been able to get enough information to find it. Which meant he was mostly flying blind, here. Orpheus seemed…almost nice, though. He wasn’t as loud and overbearing as L had expected him to be. He even seemed to understand that this might not work, and if it didn’t, they’d need to do something about it. Perhaps he could be an ally, then, even if they didn’t get along. “I’ll try later,” he decided, turning the idea over in his head. He’d need to think of a good lie first anyway, and for now, he wanted to focus on Orpheus. “After they’re done talking. I want to know where Watari is going to tell you to put your stuff, anyway.”
