This is really well written, it's just a shame I don't really care about any of the three protagonists
I actually found myself wanting one of them to die in the Dark Forest and was annoyed when they kept getting saved at the last second
Mostly because it would actually be super interesting to see a main series protagonist die in their own POV

Well, goodbye Snowtuft I guess, it was nice having you. But I find it kind of suspicious that he was killed offscreen, like a cardboard background character. I think he may be still alive.

This already looks awesome and I'm so excited for the spoiler thread on ALitM to be posted on here, that is if someone will really get the book early again. Seeing Ashfur's PoV makes me wish for him to get a novella or even an SE so that his dark mindset could be explored in situations which happened in the main books and where he seemed to be doing fine but actually wasn't. So it has now been confirmed that Ashfur indeed never forgave Hollyleaf for killing him which doesn't come as much of a surprise as he already knows how to hold a grudge (against Bramblestar and Squirrelflight).
Also, it looks like Darkstripe survived getting thrown into the Dark Forest river but who knows how long he'll make it after this. My bets are that either Rootspring or Graystripe will kill him in the final battle.
Good on Shadowsight for calling out Ashfur even though it didn't help their escape plan but anyone standing up to him is great to me.
Other than that, I would love to see another fight between Bristlefrost and Mapleshade as it was rather impressive to see her take on such a much older and experienced cat.
Finally, I refuse to believe that Snowtuft is dead. Why would they give him an important role previously only to kill him off so soon? It just doesn't make much sense.

I legit gasped when I saw the POV was Ashfur’s—it’s the perfect choice, and really, I love it! Seeing how he views himself as completely in the right, and even a *victim*? Learning how he got some of his powers? Wading into the depths of his deranged mind? *chef’s kiss* He’s like some mix of Frollo and Emperor Palpatine and I love it.
I live for that shade Shadowsight dumped on Ashfur <3 and RootBristle continues to be adorable <3
“Willowshine’s gaze darkened. “Ashfur broke his neck,” she mewed bleakly. “I’m sorry to say that he’s dead.””
Nope. Nope. NOPE. I don’t believe it. I REFUSE to believe it. That quote on the website was definitely from him, and you do NOT do my boy dirty like this. Show me his dead body or go home.
I *love* what they’re doing with the Dark Forest this arc. Like I already loved how eerie it was in TPoNS, but I think it just got even better here. A place so horrible it amplifies your negative emotions, which in turn twist it, and by extension the other planes it touches? That’s eldritch. The power of friendship, hope, and love defeating that may be corny, but I genuinely think it works. It fits with the “power”, so to speak, of the place, and it contrasts Ashfur’s vengeance, jealousy, and obsession so well.

I just finished reading it and the suspense is KILLING me. Ashfur's crazy POV is great to read and I hope everyone can escape.
The power of hope being able to loosen the vines is so sweet. It's cheesy but I always love it when the plot of included in such a dark, scary, and hopeless place. <//3

Also bristlefrost was awesome in the preview. Her fighting odd mapleshade to save stemleaf, and bringing in hope for the rest of the group was awesome. She's restoring my faith in her as a character.

"When fear reigns supreme, only hope can save the Clans." - From the A Light in the Mist blurb
I get it now!
I know what it means!
The Clans must use hope to break the vines cutting them off from StarClan.

prediction: snowtuft has actually been working with ashfur the whole time Please NO I'll take an off screen death over that I second that. There are other characters which could be used to do some double crossing. Maybe Willowshine is once again possessed and will try to sabotage the Clans efforts of breaking down the barrier cutting off StarClan or something like it.

Seeing Ashfur's pov was delightful. I'm glad they finally showed that, and also explained his powers, the fact that he never changed, and his dealings with the DF cats, very interesting.
Bristlefrost finally kicking it into gear again and saving Rootspring's life was badass. Fighting through a horde of DF cats and your former clanmates even takes some guts.
It was brave for Shadowsight to stand up against Ashfur, but I do feel bad for him now. I'm actually liking his characterization so far in the last two books. A much better improvement over his whiney naive nature in the first four.
Also, yikes, Mapleshade showing yet again how powerful of a threat she can be, never thought I'd see the day she and Ashfur teamed up. I must say, I loved seeing Bristle and Maple also duke it out, it's very entertaining.
I agree with his reasoning, if you're going to be in an interclan relationship, it better be ride or die, not strung along. Choose to either be with your mate, or be with your clan, no lies, no secrets, and no dancing around until you know you'll get caught because of kits.
I'm gonna go with the idea Snowtuft is dead, Willowshine has no reason to lie when she's not under Ashfur's control anymore.
Using hope to cut through the despair that sealed the pool is cheesy but great, there's something heartwrenching about seeing how they haven't given up yet. I like that. Also seeing Leafpool again is so nice.
Ashfur upsetting the balance between StarClan and the Dark Forest is interesting.

What it was and how we came to that after interesting and atmospheric Lost Stars and Silent Thaw. How could people make a plot for this make a plot for very strong super edition about Greystripe and Leopardstar and novels about Tree and Pebbleheart. Light in the Mist, as Place without Stars are unreadable fanfic.

It’s unlikely but I don’t want it to happen I actually wouldn't mind for that to happen if the writing team did a better job at it than with Cinderpelt/heart. But I'm highly doubting for this to really occur. Snowtuft is still out there somewhere.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Ashfur's POV as the prologue. Dude's just totally messed up in the head lol. Also the transition from Ashfur to Rootspring's POV was very smooth.
Rootspring being super pissed at Darkstripe makes me excited that he might be the one to kill him a second time. I wonder if Mapleshade & friends will team up with the living and StarClan according to this book's description, but it's looking to be the opposite so far.
Bristlefrost is finally starting to grow on me. She really just came in and fought off a horde of enemies to save Rootspring. Her using Firestar's trick of going limp to trick Mapleshade was an epic callback!
It's nice that we finally have all three protagonists in one place interacting with each other.
Shadowsight roasting the hell out of Ashfur was the most satisfying thing by far in this arc. He deserved every moment of that.
RIP Snowtuft, if his death was real. I hope this doesn't turn out to be true, but that death screech is undeniable.
So, we finally have a confirmed weakness with Ashfur's elderitch powers. Makes me wonder how this battle is going to go down, if Ashfur has to remain completely still in order to focus his souls' energy. I really hope that the ending isn't a 'Where's Ashfur?' scenario when the battle occurs. It'd be nice to see him throw in a few more fatal punches in the fight before he gets his a** handed to him.
Seeing the other souls still have their consciousness intact is a huge relief. It's saddening to see how scared and helpless they are against Ashfur. On a lighter note, Stemleaf being excited about his kits with Spotfur was pretty cute, and I still really love how they're handing Root and Bristle's relationship.
Leafpool is back! Seeing another StarClan cat for once is a breath of fresh air. Getting a look into how the StarClan cats are being effected by Ashfur' tampering is interesting. If the clan cats break the barrier, I wonder how wholesome that scene would go with StarClan reuniting with them.
I wonder who will volunteer to go into the Dark Forest to help break the barrier. I can see all the living dark forest trainees volunteering since they have experience, Harestar and Tigerstar included. I'd love to see Ivypool and Bristlefrost fight side by side as mother and daughter. I also have a feeling that barrier will be heavily guarded the next time they come back. This book is turning out really good so far, I can't wait for the release! It's right around the corner!!
