Because of how Vicky wrote her story, what do you think about her now? Do you think it could have been done better, or is it okay to you?

While I like stories being told from a villain's perspective, Mapleshade's Vengeance was just really poorly executed to me. Villain stories are supposed to explain why a villain acts the way they act and/or go into more depth into their ulterior motives. They aren't supposed to make the villain look like a victim while everyone else is just portrayed as a jerk.
The Rise of Scourge and even Tigerclaw's Fury were proper villain stories because it's clear these cats aren't meant to be sympathized with, no matter their past or motives, and neither stories have that many characters that are jerks. It even says right in the introduction of TRoS that nothing should excuse Scourge's actions. The same should apply to Mapleshade.
Another perfect example of this would be in a prequel novel to The Lunar Chronicles series, Fairest. In it, you see the struggles of the woman who's going to end up becoming the main villain and how she ended up becoming such a cruel person. Even I felt a bit sorry for her when a flashback of her childhood is shown, but it's clear that her past shouldn't excuse her actions. Now, I understand that MV has an entirely different plot and genre, but it still has a poorly executed story. Again, it's not a proper villain story. I get this is what Vicky was probably trying to go for, but she ended up failing horribly at it.
As a writer myself, MV could've been so much better and there really is very little middle ground between making a sympathetic antagonist and a villain. The Erins did this really well with some other antagonists, so it really is a shame how they turned Mapleshade's background into a really poorly written one. I'd be fine if Mapleshade still felt as though the world were against her or was still driven by petty revenge, but not if nearly everyone around her is being portrayed as a jerk, if that makes sense.
I'd even be okay with Mapleshade being an unreliable narrator and this would be very believable given how delusional she is, but this doesn't seem to be the case at all for MV. And to be honest, I have no problems with sympathetic or tragic villains depending on the writing, but the problem here is that the story seemed to be trying too hard to make Mapleshade into one to the point where it almost seems like her actions are supposed to be justified when they really shouldn't be.
I liked the concept of MV, I liked getting into Mapleshade's mind, but what I didn't like was how both were executed.

I don't think Mapleshade herself was poorly written- but heck, basically everyone and everything else was.
I hate when authors try to make a character look better by making other characters look worse. It's extremely lazy, and my number 1 pet peeve.
It also reminds me of a not-so-fond memory of someone attacking me for hating Onestar, and all they said was "Hey Firestar was worse!" every single time xD they didn't even have any good things to say about Onestar at all.
I don't play that game.
