are they irresponsible by allowing him to run away and around the lake while fathering a single litter of kits before dying there without neutering him?

I mean, yeah. But like, what cat owner in Warrior Cats ISN'T wildly irresponsible for plot reasons (':
(Although wildly irresponsible cat owners is an unfortunately surprisingly realistic aspect of the series lol)

rusty was 6 months when he joined the clans, and seemed very used to being outside, meaning these owners were alloying a kitten to free roam outside without supervision, without neutering, and then after the kitten vanished and never came back, they got another one that they also proceeded to allow to free roam. disgustingly irresponsible cat owners are realistic but this is a pretty extreme case even by those standards lol.

I must be tired because I can’t understand what op is trying to say. They're saying that Firestar's former owners were pretty stupid to let a kitten run free without spraying him, and then not even make a noticeable effort to get him back.

I agree. People really shouldn't let their pets roam unsupervised. Anything can happen to them. Not to mention cats are a major invasive species and have wrecked havoc on ecosystems.

Completely agreed. I'm even against walking cats outside on a leash. Cats are supposed to be indoor animals 24/7, 365, and must be spayed/neutered as soon as they're able. (Speaking of which, my kitten is about to be spayed in 4 days! ) I'm going to be honest, any person that adopts an animal from an animal shelter, if that animal dies due to circumstances that could have easily been prevented, they should be barred from owning pets. Idk, maybe some sort of mark on their permanent record or something. Any person that lets their cat out without supervision and safety truly doesn't love the animal (I'm just saying, being honest), much like parents who let their kids out on their own before the age of 13+ The risks are far too great, and as pikafuey said, they are a highly invasive species that cause some of the most destruction to native habitats, apart from us humans.

Letting unneutered kittens wander around outside is pretty common in the real world, that's the case with my uncle's cat and I have to wonder how many stray kittens that cat's fathered by now. 😬 So it's stupid but boy it's unfortunately realistic.
But y'know who I'd have to say is the least responsible owner in the series? The people who own Bumble in DotC. A stray (Turtle Tail) wanders into their home so they keep her, unspayed, probably never even took her to a vet for a checkup or I think she would have mentioned it, then they adopted an unneutered tom, like??? Were they trying to get kittens?? The amount of feral cats who end up in homes in this series without getting checked for fleas or worms is horrifying. 😂
