Crookedstar's Promise acts like he is to be one of the greatest leaders the forest has seen. Now that we got some inside RC action in Leopardstar's Honor, what do you think? Is he really a great leader?

To be honest I think he was a good leader until he lost everyone. Willowshine, Oakheart, and Silverstream dying had a massive toll on him mentally.
And then bad things kept happening to his Clan, and more cats died. I think him wanting peace over war was very valid given what he was going through. He didn't want to lose more cats.
Not to mention I think it's safe to believe that he still thought it was all his fault everyone died, thanks to Mapleshade.

I still like him and like him best out of RiverClan leaderships.

I think he was fine. I think he stumbled some, but his clan went through a lot during his time as leader. I think it's realistic that he sometimes struggles and doubts himself, and is honestly in line with what we know about character. It's also clear he can pull himself together when his clan really needs him

Crookedstar was mostly fine at being leader. Then again no one is perfect (except Firestar, just kidding but not really).
He still did a way better job than his successor though.

I wouldn't call him a really great leader, but he was a good, strong, loyal leader. And honestly, compared to a lot of the leaders we tend to get in Warriors, I'll take it. I definitely like Crookedstar.

I'll just say it, the guy's a snake in the grass and I have always said that. It always struck me as a little suspicious how he seemed to just vacillate between political positions in the original series, always seeming shifty and untrustworthy. Of course, at the time, one could have justified it as masterful political manipulation, with Crookedstar playing all sides against each other to make sure Riverclan comes out on top.
Then comes LH, and we realize that he had absolutely no clue what he was doing and was so unimpressive that it honestly makes a ton of sense why Leopardstar turned out the way she did. Don't get me wrong, I think morally she's clearly worse and everything, but goodness me Crookedstar never fails to do something inept in this book. His "peace" with Shadowclan is an absolute joke, where he rolls over and shows his belly for Brokenstar while his clan is starving instead of defending his hunting grounds. The worst part is that we know full well that Brokenstar was a weak leader, so he can't even claim he was defending his clan from facing a strong enemy. All he was doing was supporting Shadowclan parasiting off of his land. It then gets even worse when he decides to support war against Windclan basically because Nightstar told him to.
You know how a lot of people disagree with the books' portrayal of Rowanstar as a catastrophically bad leader who led his clan into the dumps through general ineptitude? I'd argue essentially that portrayal is what LH sells, of Crookedstar being wildly out of touch and too indecisive to lead effectively, and by consequence inspiring a far worse monster of a leader in Leopardstar due to destroying Riverclan's stability and social fabric. At the same time, wow do I feel sympathetic for him. Dude suffered a lot and I don't think he really did anything with ill intent. He just...wasn't very good at it. One can sympathize with his moral position and ideals while also feeling that his execution as such of it was poor.
Anyway, cool character, bad leadership tenure.

Crookedstar is a great guy but by the end, his ability to lead was just falling apart. I can sympathize why, however.

I think you have a really good point that I didn't consider. He was a good guy, but definitely wasn't a strong leader - or at the very least, not the leader his SE made it seem like he should become. I don't think he was a bad leader necessarily - I do genuinely think he always did what he believed to be best for his Clan - but ultimately I see your point and agree. When it comes down to it, he was never really cut out to be a leader - he didn't tend to lean into leadership at all during his days as a warrior, and if it weren't for Mapleshade convincing him that he'd be the greatest leader ever, I don't think he ever would've maintained his interest in leadership.
