Inexplicably, his stomach sank with disappointment when he saw the grand throne room was empty. No queen, no members of her court or any advisors. Stupid, he thought. Why should he be disappointed to find the queen was indeed missing? This is what youโve wanted, a voice in his head prompted, but it did not sound like his own. Not like this. This is too good to be true.
He still believed it was too early to know anything, but the events that were unfolding may yet have been a blessing in disguise, and he kept that in mind, even as he was thinking of other places to check: the gardens, the sleeping quartersโฆ though it was more likely than not that the guards had already searched everywhere by now. So he turned to Amzen with a sort of trepidation as he listened to her, in a rare moment of cautiousness on his part.
His future queen was thinking the same thing. This is it. He couldnโt deny the spark of excitement. If this was it, then the wait was over. Damn the reason why, or the consequences that may follow, it was Amzenโs time. He didnโt care if it was a bit premature and cold-hearted of him to assume the worst of Helette. Of course she must have left the reef. It was the only explanation. But had she left before the festivities of the night, to avoid facing her people, or was there some nefarious scheme behind it all?
The queen had made questionable choices in the past. It wouldnโt surprise him if she chose to be a coward. Xanbar was still lost in thought when the large doors reopened. The wrasse who entered held a thin shale slab.
โWhat, has she gone alone? Did you see her?โ Xan asked. It was so reckless, especially for Helette, he almost admired it.
โThat is all I know. A serving girl found the note beneath the bath in the queenโs washroom and gave it to me.โ The steward held the note out to Amzen and bowed when he was dismissed, leaving them in a room that suddenly, to Xan, felt as though the oxygen had been sucked out of. Their hopes had been dashed, just like that. Disgust reared its ugly head.
โHow could she do that? Just leave. I donโt understand.โ The room was dark, but Xan could feel Amzen, still as a statue beside him. He started pacing. โThis is maddening. Sheโs left another mess for you to clean up.โ As usual, Amzen would have to make a statement of some kind, to reassure the people that everything was under control. She couldnโt tell the whole truth. Helette was the eye of a storm, and the reef was at her oblivious mercy.
He stopped pacing. โWeโll have to make sure sheโs okay, wonโt we?โ It was the last thing he wanted to do, but Amzen had something of a soft spot for her predecessor. And, begrudgingly, he knew it was the right thing to do, tempting though it was to stage a coup in Helette's absence and cross their fingers that she never came back.
