[ Brownie Yeah with merfolk going on, anything goes! I envision the world being quite vast and diverse so I'm totally open to all kinds of creatures and people inhabiting it. I love the idea of Rawn being a half goliath! Go for it! And hit me with your race/religion/culture ideas too as they come! Kell is human and comes from probably a neighboring region but I haven't planned anything outside of that. ]
[ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ sounds good haha no pressure! And do you enjoy doing character forms? If you like doing them for the sake of developing characters, I'm totally down. Obviously I'm cool with just jumping in too if you don't like doing them. Speaking of which, I need to figure out what I'm doing with my character. She doesn't have a name yet! lol ]

KELL Brownie { Country: Miyera , Region: Ashust Bluffs , Town: Sterack Outpost }
Angel-eyes was in need of rest. So was he, but he tried to ignore the ache in his limbs and back. There was little chance of finding a feather pillow in those parts. Besides, his mission was not yet complete.
Perhaps his appearance was convincing enough that no one gave him a second glance. He supposed he could pass for a monster hunter himself. He was not dressed to fight, but he had a sword on his back. And his build was no different from any other manโs. In fact he was taller than most. But his hands were the hands of a farmer, callous and with dirt under the fingernails. It was his father who had fought in wars, not Kell.
โYouโve come a long way.โ The voice came from his left, and Kell restrained himself from flinching. He had been preparing himself to march up to the first person who crossed his path, but it seemed his presence at the outpost had not gone unnoticed after all. The voice belonged to a man with dead lizards hanging from his belt. Kell pried his gaze away from the oozing carcasses and up to the manโs bearded face. "I was hoping you'd seen a traveler on the road up here? About yea high, long blonde hair, big ego, generally a bastard."
Unfortunately Kell knew exactly who the man was referring to. He had seen many terrible things on his journey. The most recent was still burned in his memory: an armless body slumped against a tree, his blonde hair pulling over his shoulders. The pestilence of the forest had gotten to the body long before Kell had, and he had left without giving it a proper burial. He had not wanted to meet whatever could rip a manโs limbs clean off. Call it cowardice, but he was trying to get a monster killed, not the other way around.
โIโm afraid he met the same fate as your lizards,โ answered Kell honestly. A younger version of himself would have feigned ignorance. But he knew now it was better to be honest than kind, especially in a world as bloody as theirs. Then he qualified, โIf the body I saw in the forest is the same man.โ
He kept his tone neutral and hoped โgenerally a bastardโ had not been a term of endearment. Death was a fact of life that was impossible to ignore in such dangerous parts. He could not summon the sympathy to mourn for a man he had never known.
Angel-eyes prodded his shoulder with her nose, and he shrugged her off impatiently. โLook, Iโm trying to find a monster hunter. I have coin for the beastโs head and for the trouble of finding it.โ The change of subject was perhaps insensitive, but he needed to cut to the chase. Either this person was able to help him or he wasnโt. And Kell would rather know the truth sooner rather than later.
The journey back seemed impossibly far, but in truth it was only a ride of a day or so through the mountains. His search had taken him in a near circle. He tried not to consider how much damage had been done since he was gone. A vision of raized houses was etched behind his eyes. Fields of grain turned to blackened ash. A girl falling from the sky. It was no wonder he had trouble sleeping, lack of feather pillows aside.

- - - Aw poor kid has a dragon problem </3 - - - Lavender Sterack's Peak; Guild Outpost . with Kell Lavender saw the man's face sour, โIโm afraid he met the same fate as your lizards.โ
He swore and brought his hand up to his neck. That would explain Novick's tardiness, though it wouldn't be the fate he wished upon the trader, even one as crooked as Novick was. Lavender sighed. He'd have to report Novick's death to the guild, and that would be paperwork. "Now what am I supposed to do with these," he muttered under his breath, even more annoyed of the stain the lizards were leaving on his pants. He'd have to find Rawn and hopefully the large hunter would know someone who would take them off their hands, though he doubted they'd get as good of a price as the bounty Novick's contact was offering. Lavender thought to ask where, exactly, the traveler had seen the body, and if perhaps he still had his money pouch on him. . .
โLook, Iโm trying to find a monster hunter. I have coin for the beastโs head and for the trouble of finding it," the man said. He looked more determined than before and Lavender shook off his own thoughts.
Lavender couldn't help but grin as he waved a hand to the camp. "Any man, or woman, here would do such a job. If you pay 'em enough. Though we all have our specialties; there's a gal that can charm pixies, a few that tame hawks to hunt dragonflies, a man called Stonejaw only takes bounties on bears." Lavender shrugged and rolled back onto his heels. "Plus, I've killed my fair share of beasties. Whatcha looking to kill?"
He realized what a good opportunity this was. Without the pay for the lizards, this month's cut was looking to be thin. A new bounty was just what Lavender needed; it was almost as if the hunter gods placed this man in front of him for this exact purpose. He might even convince Rawn to help again, though without the money from their last hunt, he didn't know if the giant hunter would be especially keen to partner up again. Yanna, perhaps? Or maybe it was something he could slay on his own, from how this man was acting --and he had a horse-- he must be offering enough to keep Lavender fed for a solid month. Lavender ran his hand through his still trail-messy hair. Good fortune indeed. - - -

hi there! hope your job interview went well! c: it's been a long while since I've done a 1x1 rp and I must admit I've only done it like. twice. I'm usually more comfortable in group rps where I can bounce ideas off of other people and it's not all on me to keep the ball rolling, but this looks interesting and I'd like to give it a try! I love worldbuilding and getting deep into character arcs and character development. It's not something I typically find in warrior cat roleplays, however Cx anywho, forgive me if I'm a bit rusty rping humanoid characters with one other person. it's not personal, seriously! I'm just out of practice lmao. so! I kind of came up with this on the fly by pulling bits of inspiration from other media. It's longish bc I was pretty much just braindumping. If it's not your cup of tea I won't be offended, but obviously feel free to expand on it if it catches your fancy! Idea: modern high fantasy, magic war. Elves, dwarves, monsters, and other elements of traditional high fantasy all exist within a fast-paced, high-tech modern era. Kind of like benders in Republic City from LoK, but it doesnโt have to be specific to the 1920โs - just some time in the 20th or 21st centuries. And Iโm thinking it would take place in a fictional country instead of real ones like in the Harry Potter universe.
Loose background: magic-users/mages/spellcasters or whatever you wanna call them were once integral to society. They were respected and feared for their powers and always held the most highly-regarded offices in the land. Everything was run by a few very large, very powerful โnobleโ mage families who could trace their lineage back several generations to famous sorcerers or something. Magic was just a part of everyday life. Then some kind of industrial revolution happens, giving non-mages a sudden leg up on their magic-using rulers. Technology begins rapidly replacing magic. Mages are losing their jobs, small mage-owned businesses are losing money, mages in metropolitan areas are being crowded into the worn down older districts of the city, etc. In many places mages are now looked down upon with mistrust and fear. Their powers are considered quaint and obsolete at best, dangerous and needing to be strictly controlled at worst. Maybe thereโs still a few old-money mage families out there advocating for the relevancy of magic in a modern world, but their voices donโt carry as much weight as they used to. Children born into mage families struggle to find a balance between keeping the old magicks alive/preserving their heritage and finding their place in a high-tech world. So magic and technology continue in this sort of uneasy coexistence for a while.
Then someone who is very anti-magic for [insert reason] takes leadership and starts pushing dramatic changes. They open a โschoolโ where mages can go to, idk, hone their craft and use it to power new technologies. It promises to be a safe, inclusive place where magic-users donโt have to worry about being overlooked and forgotten, where they can still feel useful and play their part in society, blahblahblah. Turns out the schools are basically prisons/experimental labs and are just an excuse for the government to monitor the mages in a closed environment. The outside world doesnโt know about this. An underground rebellion that maybe escalates to revolution that may or may not turn into full scale war between magic-users and non-magic-users ensues.
A fistful of plot bunnies for your perusal: child of an old noble mage family who decides to embrace tech and secretly work against their family; mages being abducted in the night; mages who are captured and taken to the โschoolsโ who then find a way to break out and help their fellows escape; non-magic-user who maybe wishes they were a magic-user and wants to help the cause; mages who are pro-tech and tech-savvies who are pro-magic; different sects with ulterior motives arising on both sides; spies and assassins being hired on both sides; families and romances being torn apart; found families and romances being kindled in the rebellion; an attempted coup in the government; magic mafia targeting non-mage families and just adding to the overall chaos, etc. Yay? Nay? Too much to throw at you at once? What do you think?

Xanbar Toora Sea - Moon Wrasse Reef
It wasnโt difficult to lose track of time underwater. The way that the sun appeared was so distorted, deformed; the light seemed to last longer than its source. By the time the light reaches us, the star is already dead. Now, where had he heard that before?
Green eyes peered through strands of seaweed, watching nothing in particular. โFocus, Xan,โ Orryon reprimanded, and Xanbar flinched away from the sudden voice intruding in his thoughts. It was true, he was shirking his responsibilities, hiding in the mucous forest.
โLow-tide is upon us.โ With that simple phrase, the royal hunter was swallowed up by the dark leaves again. Xanbar stuck his tongue out and blew bubbles at the manโs back. He allowed himself another moment to watch those bubbles float like diamonds upward, before he slipped after him, trying to imagine what the sky above would look like. Red and pink speckled with gold? Purple fading to grey and black? The possibilities were endless. Though they were only about thirty meters down, blue was the most prevalent color of their world. Aside from the sea creatures themselves, of course. Most evenings, Xan would get as close to the surface as he could, only breaking it on occasion. Today, it seemed, he would not get the chance to.
Orryon was right. Sunset was the perfect time for spear-fishing. Xan had volunteered to help him, and although he was now regretting it, he followed the Kingโs Fisher away from the reef. An ironic title, he thought, not for the first time. It was outdated, for one, from a time when their shoal was led by males in succession, which had been eons ago, as far as Xan was concerned. But no one seemed to think that the role Orryon held was significant enough to need a change, even if the shoal was ruled by a queen and had been for all relevant history.
He supposed if there was one thing he could count on, it was peopleโs predictability. The tendency to hold on to that which was familiar was almost overwhelming at times, for most. Donโt fix what isnโt broken. He wished he could yell this statement right in front of the queen, and force some sense into her. What she was trying to do of late, encouraging interaction with humansโฆ It was dangerous. His only comfort was knowing that Amzen agreed with him. Things would be better when she was in charge.
Orryon must have realized that Xanbar was not paying attention. He pulled up short, and his young โhelperโ ran straight into him. He swung around, obviously displeased.
โXanbar, please. If you arenโt going to try and catch anything, just go back. Get off my tail.โ Orryon ignored the look on Xanโs face as the kid tried (poorly) to suppress a smirk at his choice of words. Instead, he swam off, having decided to leave Xanbar to his own devices.
Xan should have been thankful. He was free to go, but that wasnโt what he wanted. If the royal hunter couldnโt tolerate him, what did that say about Xan? He readjusted his grip on his spear, taking a breath and releasing it. Focus. He did feel rather guilty; he was supposed to learn something from Orryon. Xan was not exactly new to boy-hood, not now that a few months had passed since the Ten-Day Transition, and he could barely be called a juvenile anymore. He had to be able to pull his weight, or be cast out, and thus far, this was a rather sorry attempt to be useful.
With new resolve, Xanbar shadowed Orryonโs behavior, approaching the mountains of rock that dotted the sea floor, scanning the clusters of coral for movement. He caught clownfish mostly, and a small octopus here and there. He was starting to feel better about his performance, that maybe this day wasnโt a loss to mediocrity after all, and he turned, preparing to return home. The last thing he expected to see was a barracuda, but there was the sleek, silver body, its sharp underbite agape. It was eyeing his full bag, which was no more than a woven net.
โScavenger.โ Xan accused the fish, putting as much venom into his tone as he could, as if the predatory fish would know it wasnโt welcome. Alas, it did not. It swam closer, and Xan waved his spear at it, to no avail. The barracuda dodged, its lidless eyes staying locked on to what it thought was its next meal. Xan was perhaps too quick to relent, but it wasnโt often anyone saw the carnivorous species. He pulled out a runty clownfish, releasing it into the current. The barracuda snapped it up in a second, but it did not swim away. Xanbar made a face and kicked past it, continuing even when he looked back to see it was still there.
It appeared he had a new friend, for the barracuda came with him, all the way home to the reef. It even followed him into the castle, down the sandstone stairs into the corridors near the servantโs quarters. Seemingly fearless, yet the fish stuck close to Xanโs side as they entered the kitchen, evidently hoping for more snacks.
Xanbar glanced around. The head chef had his back turned, speaking with one of the maids. It seemed they were short of staff today, which was strange, considering there was supposed to be a feast tonight. The entire shoal would celebrate the Queenโs first trip above ground: visiting the nearby human kingdom tomorrow, with whose monarchs she intended to forge an alliance of sorts.
Xanโs unease reared its head like a moray, twisting his stomach into knots. Who knows what the future will bring? Amzen would say something like that, reminding him not to be so pessimistic. He released a breath he didnโt realize heโd been holding, emptying his haul into a basin designated for fresh catches. His barracuda approached and he swatted it away, only semi-surprised when it didnโt try to bite him. It certainly deserved a reward for its patience, and although it wasnโt really entitled to anything in this kitchenโฆ
โDonโt tell anyone.โ Xan plucked the tail from a fish-roll on the counter and fed it to the barracuda. Fins were mostly decorative anyway; they had little nutritional value, but all the same, tasty to anyone who wasnโt a picky eater. They snuck back out into the hall, quiet as sea stars, and almost bumped into another, younger male, headed into the kitchen. His eyes were wide, his quiet apology barely concealing his panic as he passed.
Xan almost left, then. Whatever it was, was not his concern. Probably nothing. Mind your own business. But then he heard what it was, and suddenly, the desire to be nosy grew exponentially.
โThe queen is missing.โ

[ Yoooo I'm alive! Hopefully you guys are doing alright too. Sorry I vanished for a few days; it's been an unexpectedly wild week. The good news is that my cats survived lily toxicity, but it's been a whole ass event moving them between vets and getting them tested and everything. Plus my aunt came down with covid so I've been shopping and making trips to get her what she needs. Anyway, I'm here now and hopefully whatever was happening astrologically is chilling the hell out. ]
[ Tealraven I finally read through your proposal and I love it! I think the idea of technology versus magic is a really interesting one and definitely one we can explore. I was planning on having all of these plots take place in the same world, which poses a slight problem in terms of the level of technology utilized. Would you be open to the city which is experiencing a technological boom being more mid to late 19th century? That way it's feasible for advancements to have taken place and certain things like guns or machinery can be involved, but the more rural or traditional places can still coexist in the same universe? Other than that I'm totally on board. A school/prison with people with magical abilities is an awesome idea. Would you be open to opening the plot up for others to be involved since you enjoy having multiple collaborators? ]
[ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ Brownie I'm getting posts up for both of you today! ]

KELL Brownie { Country: Miyera , Region: Ashurst Bluffs , Town: Sterack Outpost }
โWhatcha looking to kill?โ It was a simple enough question, and a fair one at that, but Kell paused before answering.
He did not have a name for the creature. A woman in Eska, the town nearest his own, had called it a dragon. Of course he was familiar with the dragons of the tales, the ones with glimmering scales and scorching breath. These were the creatures that had populated the stories of his childhood. Certainly one of those would have been capable of doing what his beast had done: burning homes, setting fire to the fields, dropping people and farm animals from the sky. But there had been something different about this beast.
โI donโt know what it was,โ Kell said honestly. โIt burned my home village to the ground. It tore people in half and disappeared into the skies. But it did not look like a dragon, per se. In fact, its shape morphed and twisted like a shadow.โ
He swallowed, and noted that his throat was dry. He was withholding some information, not because he wished to mislead the bearded man, but because he could not put it into words. He studied the man with the oozing lizards on his belt. โEver heard of anything like that?โ
No one he had met in his travels had a word for the creature he described. When he told them of its deadliness, its flight, and its shapelessness, they usually came up with some excuse. He could not blame them. It was easier to make money by killing less dangerous monsters near home. Who knew how much those lizards would catch in the marketโten, twenty silver pieces? And that was only a half dayโs work.
What Kell needed was a man or woman who was after more than just coin. Pride, ambition, revenge, curiosity, spite, generosityโsome motivation strong enough to make them agree to his challenge. At the end of the day, though, he was bidding against people's fear and self-doubt. Even a purse of gold coins was not enough to override those two things.
He ran a hand over his chin, as if already accepting defeat. Then he cocked an eyebrow at the other man, posing the silent question. Are you my champion?

AMZEN ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ Brownie { Country: Toora Sea , Region: Mooon Wrasse Reef }
โItโs just so selfish,โ Yste was saying. Amzen paused in her work and looked up, brow furrowing in gentle confusion. She had not been listening to her friendโs rambling. It was a poor habit on her part; she had a way of drifting off in conversation, like a fish caught in a strong current toward the deep sea. Thankfully Yste was not looking for validation, and continued speaking.
โI mean, what if this starts a war? Fifty years avoiding conflict with the landfolk, peace across the sea, all for what? To dabble in half-hearted diplomacy?โ Ysteโs nimble fingers were crafting a necklace with pieces of broken shell. They paused every few seconds as the young female emphasized certain words like war and diplomacy with blatant hostility.
โMhm,โ Amzen murmured every few seconds. She was making jewelry as well, a pair of earrings from the pink rocks she had discovered in an octopus den. In truth, she was better at it than Yste was. It was how she occupied much of her time: creating little items that elicited oohs and aahs. But this was the sacred time of every high tide, when the two of them gathered in the shallows and gossiped about reef politics. It was less about crafting and more about socializing. Amzen always looked forward to their little meetings, because it provided an excuse to leave the bustle of the castle. There was more light in the shallows, and always sat serenely in the sand below the waves.
โAll I can say is that Iโm looking forward to the day that youโre queen,โ Yste said. Then she stopped to hold her necklace up to her throat. She modeled it with a sassy raise of the shoulder and a pursing of her blueish lips. She was a beautiful wrasse, though quite different from Amzen. The color in her scales was vibrant like a rainbow fish, especially around her temples and throat. She had begun to show the signs of the Transition, her shoulders were broadening, and her face growing more square. She was a few months older than Amzen, who was still slender and soft around the edges. โYou like?โ
Amzen nodded in encouragement. โBeautiful!โ she gushed, and bubbles of laughter escaped her lips. She floated up, feeling the cool water on her legs, and glanced back toward the reef. She knew it was time to return. If they lingered much longer, she would be scolded by the guardwrasse.
โArenโt you looking forward to it?โ Yste was asking. A school of common silver fish was darting toward them from the deep, perhaps escaping a dolphin or tiger shark. Amzen glanced back toward her friend.
โTo what?โ she asked distantly.
โTo being queen,โ Yste reiterated with a hint of annoyance. Sensing it was time to go, she began swimming in the direction of the reef.
Amzen shrugged. Xanbar had asked her that question many times before, but she still did not have a good answer. โI suppose so,โ she said vaguely. An answer in the affirmative was clearly what her friend wanted, and Amzen knew she ought to have been more ambitious. But she had known for most of her life that she was in line to be queen, and the appeal of it all had faded very quickly. She saw how much pressure was placed upon a rulerโs shoulders. And she witnessed how wrasse criticized her predecessor for every wrong move. But she did want to do right by the reef. She could see where the current queen had made serious missteps, and Amzen knew exactly how to remedy them.
โI donโt understand you sometimes,โ Yste noted with an emphatic eye roll. She swam ahead by a few strokes, angling her body back so she could watch her friend. โI would love to be queen. The best rooms in the palace! Wrasse waiting on your every request! Suitors in every color of the rainbow!โ
Amzen laughed again. Yste was ridiculous, but she never failed to make Amzen laugh. โThe suitors wonโt be necessary,โ she amended. They both knew she was not in search of a mate. Xanbar had been hers since they were little more than minnows. He was her equal in every way, her perfect counterpart. She wondered where he was in that moment, and could almost imagine that she was seeing through his eyes.
In her reverie she failed to notice Yste freeze as they neared the reef. Only once she felt her friendโs hand grip her upper arm did she realize the mood had turned. โWhat is it?โ she asked.
โSomethingโs wrong,โ Yste said softly. Only then did Amzen spot the males diving in from the surface, or the fish darting nervously in and out of the coral. The two females angled swiftly for the palace, instantly dropping their childish chatter. Once they were inside it was clear that something had indeed transpired. The great hall was bustling with wrasse whose eyes were wide and glassy. Murmuring could be heard from all directions, too low to Amzen to make out. She spotted Xanbar up ahead and left Ysteโs side to approach him.
โWhat happened?โ she asked, searching his face for answers.

( hey, I'm glad the interview went well and your kitties are okay! no worries about vanishing, we all have busy days. take your time and remember to take care of yourself as you're taking care of others, too! <3
I'm glad you liked my proposal c: I'm sorry it was so long to read through - my imagination does get a tad carried away sometimes lol. When an idea comes I just roll with it! re: time period - mid to late 19th century sounds good to me! I was thinking of starting in media res, so to speak. That way some of these advancements could already be under way and developing around our characters as we go. What are your thoughts on these events coming to a head in some kind of open conflict?
I'm also totally down to open this up to others if you'd like! I think that would work well should we choose to incorporate all of those plots c: Were there any plots in particular that stood out to you? )

( I like that idea as well! Archetypes are always fun. c: Perhaps the family involved in the tech boom sent their magic-using child away so they wouldn't become a stain on the family name. This leaves the child with some self-esteem issues and a very negative view of magic, seeing as it was the manifestation of their abilities that took them away from their family. Like, they never asked for this, why did it have to be them, etc. Upon meeting the student from a wealthy magic-using family there's immediate resentment/envy on their side and that sorta kicks off the rivalry between the two? I think it would be interesting to incorporate a "magic is a gift vs. magic is a curse/burden" theme.
If we want to throw in a non-magic-user... what if there's this impoverished family that's lost their business and had to go into hiding because one of them has suddenly manifested magical abilities? And then this family member vanishes one night (this could be part of the mages mysteriously being abducted all over the city plotline) and the completely normal, no-powers sibling/childhood friend/whatever tracks them to the magic school/prison and finds out that's where all the missing mages have been going? Then we have an interesting contrast of this wealthy, sheltered student who thinks they're hot stuff, the student who has been outcast by their tech-savvy family, and the ordinary street rat who's snuck in to rescue their family member. I imagine each would have different skills to bring to the table due to their differing backgrounds. Does that appeal to you? )

( monday vibes indeed. I got my second vaccine today and owey-ow-ow does it hurt like sin lmao. forgive me if my ideas are less than coherent, my head is feeling rather fuzzy at the moment.
Okay ANYWAY yeah, those are good ideas, too! Maybe the student from the less prominent magic-using family sees the wealthy student as an opportunity to "move up in the food chain" and decides to befriend/seduce them in order to increase their family's social standing? It would be entertaining if they actually end up developing real feelings along the way lol. (or not - an odd couple friendship is just as valid!) It could knock the wealthy student's ego down a peg by being exposed to & having to ultimately work with these characters from different backgrounds. We love character development, yes? As for the orphan/foreigner archetype... hm. Perhaps their family was one of the magic-using families who decided to retreat from the modern world to preserve the Old Ways, and that's why this student is clueless about the politics of tech vs. magic? Maybe they practice a special ancient kind of magic that's really rare these days or is ~forbidden~ for some reason idk.
While I think it would be fun to come up with more archetypes, I also like the idea of fleshing out the world some more and allowing others to use that to come up with their own character ideas c: )

( Sounds good to me! We could make a handful of archetypes available for claim in addition to leaving it open for others to come in with their own character ideas; that way people have the option c:
I think we should establish a baseline for all magic - like some basic abilities that all magic-users have to begin with? And maybe they're genetically predisposed to learn certain types of magic bc their family has a strong line of, say, fire magic-users in their history. But that's not to say they couldn't learn other types as well; we could come up with a few generic "schools" of magic that they can choose to specialize in. ex: elemental magic, spirit/healing magic, hexes & curses, etc.? )
