What would have happened if Ashfur possessed Brambleclaw just as Darktail got to the lake territories? How would Ashfur react to the rogue threat and how would his leader tenure be? Let's suppose that instead of using Shadowsight as a conduit, he instead used Puddleshine in order to possess Brambleclaw.
Ashfur in this timeline has a few advantages, namely that neither Tree or Rootspring are IMMEDIATELY around, so his ghost shenanigans won't be discovered immediately. On the other hand, he has the disadvantages of actually having to be leader during a very tense time period, so his leadership will be tested far more.
How would such an AU turn out?

I think that Ashfur might not be discovered to be possessing Bramblestar until the end of the arc (or even further than that) as it would make for a great cliffhanger. When it comes to who actually gets used and who later discovers the truth about Bramblestar, I think that his son Alderheart could be the one getting manipulated and his daughter Sparkpelt could be the one who is loyal to him for a bit while Tree is the one to discover that he's an impostor. That way, all of the current TBC protagonists roles are filled (Shadowsight was the victim of manipulation, Bristlefrost was the loyal spy and Rootspring found out what really happened to Bramblestar).
When it comes to how Ashfur would lead ThunderClan, he is definitely a lot more ruthless and brutal in his way of handling situations and reacting to threats than Bramblestar ever was or would be. So there is a lot more bloodshed.

It would be difficult to imagine the Imposter being willing to let Darktail prowl around, and the hammer would probably get brought down hard earlier on. That would be bad for the Shadowclanners in rebellion or Riverclan prisoners, but it might break Darktail earlier? Or perhaps Darktail manages to hold on, and Ashfur only hurts his relationship with his allies by being so callous about their clanmates?

Ashfur being more violent would definitely help in getting rid of Darktail faster but it could also potentionally cause the other Clans (including ThunderClan) to become wary or even scared of "Bramblestar". Some might even make comments about how he is becoming just like his father which is interesting to readers but bad for the real Bramblestar and his reputation as a previously more peaceful leader who often tries to talk things out before outright attacking someone.

honnestly, having two major villains in the same arc would be really interesting. especially if they worked against each other instead of teaming up.

How would the Imposter handle Twigbranch's love drama? Would he have allowed her to jump between clans?

Considering how Ashfur treated Twigbranch during TBC, he probably would have not allowed her to come back or even imprisoned her alongside Finleap when they went to ThunderClan.
