What's your opinion on this book? I have not seen one person say anything positive about it.

I'm mostly neutral about it, I wouldn't consider it very good but it's entertainable enough to read IMO.

I don't love it or anything and it's far from my favorite book, but I do appreciate some things about it.
I love Squirrelflight so obviously I enjoy seeing her character, it was nice seeing how devoted Sparkpelt and Larksong were to each other, seeing some of the old characters like Dustpelt and Cinderpelt in StarClan was cool, and I especially loved all the Squirrelflight and Leafpool moments because I love their bond(I really liked Leafpool a lot in this book in general).

I think SqH is horrible when it comes to the characterization of certain cats and the storyline was infuriating to read about because of The Sisters.
The only good things about this book are the scenes in which Leafpool and Squirrelflight interact and seeing so many familiar faces during the StarClan moments (except for the trial and Ashfur being a creep).

I think I would have enjoyed it more if Squirrelflight's POV wasn't so redundant and boring, she kept harping on the SAME thing for pretty much the entirety of the SE, it made me feel like I was reading Hollyleaf's boring ass POV again, they focused on completely different things, but it was a snore fest. Other than that, it wasn't too bad, I really enjoyed the Mousewhisker scene and the trial.

a waste of an SE. i hate how it's necessary to read in order to move onto TBC. why even make squirrelflight and bramblestar the focus in TBC if they fail to make us like them in SqH? why should we care if squirrelflight wants her mate back in TBC if she was fighting with him in the SE right before it? they failed so hard to make me care in SqH.

The emotional bits like Larksong's and Leafpool's death saved it for me. Otherwise, it sucked.

For me, any new book focusing on Bramblestar is a personal offense. I'm not the biggest fan of Squirrelflight, but she's fun and cute, and I love how firey she is. And that's why I don't really like this book, as it's really hard to see her become a shell of herself because of Bramblestar. It's just downright depressing. The way Bramblestar behaves is downright horrible, and he never once takes responsibility for his actions either. I initially felt uncomfortable with the kits thing, but when Squirrelflight was like "I want him to want them too", I changed my mind like immediately. Bramblestar kept bringing it up in this weird misogynist way even though she dropped the topic like immediately. Bramblestar really was a textbook abuser in this book. I know we need an antagonist, but this is a very bad thing to show to impressionable kids and see it normalized.
That being said, I was excited to see the StarClan stuff, as we never get in the perspective of a dead cat in StarClan. I liked the stuff with Leafpool, and Larksong.
The StarClan trial was downright messed up though. The biggest hypocrites as the judge, and whatever happened to Littlecloud. StarClan literally forced Squirrelflight into taking in The Three, and forced Leafpool to force Squirrelflight into it. What a dumb thing, this is just like Tigerheartstar being too young to remember the Dark Forest.
Getting gaslit by your ancestors is certainly not what I'd expect on death. But I won't deny, Littlecloud's aggression was very funny.
Also the fact Crowfeather ends up killing Leafpool by accident is infinitely funny to me. He's so pathetic, I love it.
The conflict was very artificial, none of the clans were starving. The clans didn't learn a thing either. Also the territory thing in general was funny in a bad way.

rookheartLittlecloud was alive when StarClan brought Squirrelflight into Leafpool's mess, and he wasn't exactly wrong in his aggression. "What's the point of there being a code if cats keep breaking it?" That's straight facts.

You would think Leafpool fed him bugs with how angry he was.

I loved the familiar faces, Leafpool, Leafpool and Squirrelflight's bond, tiny implications of LeafCrow, and Sparkpelt and Larksong. I really hated Littlecloud's characterization, whatever happened to him? The judges are so hypocrites, they've done almost the same thing and they're "You shouldn't have done that!!"

It's heavily implied Crowfeather tattled on Bramblestar, and thus caused the battle she died in.

rookheartBy the Crowfeather logic, couldn't the same be said that Squirrelflight's actually the one who caused it? I mean, if she didn't go behind Bramblestar's back and meet the Sisters, then they wouldn't have known they were there, thus, there wouldn't have been a battle in the first place. I'm not saying Squirrelflight is at fault, but if you think about it, if she would have just waited, like everyone else wanted to, then The Sisters might not have been discovered until later, after they were all ready to travel.

Oh totally, though Crowfeather is the one who did it, knowing that a battle would happen. I don't think anyone was morally wrong in this situation (Squirrelflight and Crowfeather that is), but the fact Crowfeather goes from "attack kill" to realizing Leafpool is going to die is very amusing to me. There's just something funny to me with how Crowfeather is pathetically sad. I actually like Crowfeather, and this kind of stuff is exactly why. There's no way he could have predicted she would die, but it is his direct fault if anyone is to be blamed.

rookheartYou just said it's implied that he tattled, so I don't see how he's the most at fault. He knew a battle would start if he said something, and basically went against Bramblestar just because. So yeah, the battle happened because he told Tigerstar about land stuff despite being told not to.

Hated it. Squirrelflight was stupid, Bramblestar was disgusting, the Clans were irritating, and literally the only ones I liked were Leafstar and Tree.

Its not something I'd say is a serious component to what happened, just another moment in Crowfeather's Unfortunate Events, if you think about it. More of a tragic coincidence for him.

I'm not saying Squirrelflight is at fault, but if you think about it, if she would have just waited, like everyone else wanted to, then The Sisters might not have been discovered until later, after they were all ready to travel. Honestly, if this book demonstrates anything, it's how impatient the Clans actually are. The book is set in greenleaf, three moons after TRS, and the book kicks off because Harestar pointed out that land was being wasted and the other Clans except for SkyClan agreed, and it's made pretty obvious early on that no one was really willing to learn to adapt to their new territory like Squirrelflight had initially suggested.
Squirrelflight was also the only one who actually had any sort of plan while the leaders save for Leafstar were arguing. The alternative would've been for the Clans to give back each others' lands, which would've meant that SkyClan would've been left with little to no territory to call their own. At least this way, everyone would have a home with enough territory that wouldn't go to waste.
There was also no agreement in waiting, unless you're referring to this part?
Mistystar was willing to give SkyClan a chance to think it over, but it's pretty obvious that everyone except for Bramblestar were hoping SkyClan would agree.
And Bramblestar and Leafstar are right, it's absolutely unfair to ask SkyClan to move again, especially after all they'd gone through already, but if no one else was willing to adapt and SkyClan giving back the forest would've left them in a vulnerable position, then this was the next best thing. Given the circumstances, it's completely understandable why Squirrelflight was so adamant on this. I really don't think she should be shamed for wanting to explore unknown territory, but the fact that it was unexplored also meant there was a potential risk to consider. But at the same time, what if things had escalated? After all, the incident with Juniperclaw wasn't all that long ago.
In fact, this is even something that gets addressed not long after.
Best to explore now while the idea was still fresh in their minds. Where Squirrelflight failed, however, is that she was so determined to prove Bramblestar wrong that she let her own pride get the best of her, sneaked off with another Clan leader, and then asked her daughter to lie for her. I don't agree with how Bramblestar treated her afterwards, but there were better ways both Squirrelflight and the leaders could've handled this. Wasn't expecting for this post to be so long, but I hope you see the point I'm trying to make here. That being said, there's no doubt about it that nearly every cat was at their worst during this SE.

I wonder what an alternative could have been?
