This is something I wrote freshman year of high school I have not edited it in the years since then. I feel this is PG13 but if others don't feel so I will take it down. This is not for everyone you may not like it just warning you.
Rewriting the Ending
Tori just killed Jeanine. I just keep saying it in my mind. Tori just killed Jeanine. Why is that so hard to get through my mind, I wanted her dead. I have to keep moving, Tori is staring.
“Why didn’t you want her dead?” She said.
“ Its hard to explain. My mother was the looking for some sort of information when she rescued me instead. She died to save me so I could carry on trying to get this information. She was extremely intent on getting it to the public’s attention. Jeanine was the only one I know of that knew where the information was on the computer.”
“ We… We can get someone else to find it.We can find a way.” She looks like she’s about to cry. I shouldn’t have told her. I could have found it my self. I could do it I am Dauntless, I am Divergent.
We make our way downstairs. Everyone is cheering. How did word get out so fast that Jeanine is dead. Than I look from Tori to myself. Covered in blood with grim faces. Now I understand. Everyone starts congratulating me. Why would I be the one to kill her? I can’t even touch a gun I haven’t been able to since Will.”
“No, no I didn’t kill her. Tori did, Tori killed her not me.” I can’t seem to get them to understand I didn’t kill Jeanine.
“ Tris. TRIS! There you are.” Tobias is hugging me. He holds me like he just saw me die and the only way I would come back to life was to keep holding me. “ Why? Why would you do something so stupid? She could have killed you. You’re so stupid Tris, she could have killed you. Why do you keep risking your life like this I couldn’t survive without you. I wouldn’t want to.
“Tris we got someone to find the information.Everyone is going to see whatever your mother wanted them to see.” Tori is so relieved, you can see it in her face when I smile at the news she has just handed me.
All the screens that are still working quickly than a face appears in the screen. The face is a woman I don’t recognize. She is smiling despite the gruesome scene playing behind her.
“Hello, if you are watching this it means it is time to save us. We are out here dying by our own stupidity. Most kill out of greed, others murder out of spite, and yet some commit homicide for fun. Many of the people outside your fence are zombies of a sort because they are that brain dead from the drugs they use. You were put inside your fence and put into factions so you could become pure at heart. Or as pure at heart as the human race can be. You were given factions so you would each focus on one characteristic we need. You are the only hope left for humankind.” The all that plays horrific scenes and all you can hear is screaming. Drug addicts going insane, thinking their friends and families were conspiring against them. Ripping them apart and tearing them limb for limb. Being strapped down with reinforced steel chains and breaking them because of the superhuman strength they think they have, even when they should be dead by the fact they are so riddled with bullet holes they are still going. Than the image flashes and there is a man throwing himself in front of a killer to save his wife and child. Then a flash of green light and he’s dead. The killer makes his way to the nursery and the mother sacrifices herself for her only son to survive. The woman’s face is back. “This anarchy cannot survive. Must not survive.” On that the video fades out.
The pieces shatter. My peace of mind is shattered. Could there be other fences? Are there others out there like us? Are their factions the same, if there are more? If there are other Dauntless do they jump on and off trains. Or jump off buildings and zipline off the tallest buildings in the city? Or do they do something completely different? Like jump jump into a frozen lake or frigid waters. Is there somewhere out there where you don’t have to choose a faction. The idea terrifies me yet it's an exhilarating thought. A place where you don’t have allways be selfless, but you can smart, brave ,peaceful, and truthful without someone questioning your loyalty.
“Tris we need to get out of here now!” The urgency of Tobias’s voice brings me back from my daydream. People are going insane. If we don’t move soon we are going to die. There are faction members so scared about this truth, that they want to destroy the people who gave this mind-wrecking truth. Yet the factionless seem to be steaming, boiling with a unchecked anger.
“Why did we have to suffer without enough food, good shelter, and for most of us without a shred of dignity.”
“Tris we have to go now.” Before he was even finished with his sentence he starts pulling me toward the door. Lynn, Cristina and Uriah follow right behind us. Caleb jumps right in the way of the door as if he were going to stop us. Like he wanted to do what his leader might have done to keep everything the same. Even though he betrayed our parents, his family, but most of all me, it was sickening to hear the bang and watch my brother crumple to the ground dead. Two people, two different reasons, but both crumpled. I was so close to both and their deaths will stay with me forever but the impacts are different. One a best friend, one a traitor. Will and Caleb. Two very impactful people in my life gone, one without knowing what was happening, the other out of his own choice.
We ran and we kept running. We turned from street to street through the maze of the city. I could no longer tell where we were and only knew the place we had been when we started. Tobias and the others slow down. We are at the the fence. Our oxygen-deprived lungs screaming with every gasping breath and muscles tense and aching with lactic acid. Tobias opens the gate and it clicks shut behind us.
“What now?”Uriah says. “What are we going to do. We’re outside the fence, we don’t know where to go from here, and all we have between the five of us is four guns and Tris’s knife.
“We have to get far from the fence. They will come check the Amity compound for us and tell the Amity the news. The farther out into the “dangerous” unknown around us, the better.” Tobias’s logic must be working much better than mine right now.
“Ok we need food, water, shelter, and some clothes. Oh wait I still have the makeup.” Christina might need to readjust her priorities to survival mode ofr she’s just going to be dead weight.
“You were good until clothes and being so excited about your stupid makeup. If we’re going to survive no one is going to care what any of us look like.” My logics starting to work again. Tobias is right about that.
“Now here’s the hard choice which way do we go since we have to stay away from Amity?” I really don’t know what were going to do but I might be crazy enough to know what to do. “Maybe we should head into the tree cover and try to find some sign of humanity.”
“Why would we try to find them. Did you not see those people in the video those people killed for fun. Are you that mentally deficient after all those experiments that you want to get us all killed.” Lynn might be a real cool person, but she is a really pessimistic pain in the neck sometimes.
“She’s right though. As long as we don’t walk up to them or let them find us, we can get food and supplies than we find an isolated place to set up camp. But we should be close enough to rescue anyone who wants out especially the Divergent.” Again Tobias is already prepared for everything that’s happening. How is he so prepared already? “To the trees people”.
We walked and walked the seemingly endless path toward the trees keeping away from the Amity compound so we wouldn’t be seen. The lactic acid seems to keep getting worse until it finally it just stopped hurting.
A thicket of brambles in front and a slight valley behind it. The perfect place to set up camp. It provides protection from any attacks on any side because of the other thickets we discovered that encircled the rest of the valley.
“This place will be good for now, but what about when we need to get people out of the fence there’s only enough room for us? We could use this if we are just getting a couple of people out and we find another bigger place to set up permanent camp. Than only a couple of us go to get them and the rest stay at the camp. We could make sure that our new society ,that is going to save the human race from self-extinction, is safe and taken care of until we can find out how to save everyone from themselves.Tobias will you shut your logic up? You make me feel dumb. You’re not even the one who got Erudite as a result on your aptitude test or I don’t think you did anyway.
I woke up as the sun was rising and I sat for a while watching the colors mix and fade into a single shade of slowly changing blue. I have a horrible stomach pang and remember that its been forever since I last ate.
By now everyone’s awake and we start to walk but try to keep the general direction of our camp in mind. After we’ve been walking for a while we come upon the first village. It is an atrocity to look at, yet when I look away it has burned an image of itself into the backs of my eyelids. Villagers are dead everywhere. But it isn’t like an execution because some of them are still just barely hanging by a thread to life. Who could do something like this to not give someone a quick clean death if you have to kill them, but to make them suffer a long agonizing process?Than I remember the video people were doing this for fun. They did it out of greed. Our race is just a bunch of killers. There are children with their intestines hanging out, hanging up like holiday decorations. There are bodies missing their heads. I keep looking around to see if there are any survivors that we might be able to save. There are babies freshly orphaned but we can’t take them maybe there is another village of women who could take care of them. I keep thing those safe good thoughts and try the avoid the fact that those babies are going to die before they even have seen anything good in the world. Thats when I see them.
“Um… I think I found those bodies heads.” I’m trying not to puke it’s insane that anyone could do something so horrible. I had just walked in the room where the villagers must have tried to hide the babies. The heads were put on stakes, painted with their own blood to have a war paint- like pattern and set to stare as the babies died slowly because no one could help them. They had vertical lines of blood across both wrists and their stomachs were slit too. Their mothers and fathers’ heads staring as they died. This is the worst thing in the world to see. Now I understand why we have to save human kind.
“We need to get out of here. I think I saw a running farm down the road we can get food there the bodies should be left we don’t know how they like to be laid to rest. We could insult their spirits if we were to do it wrong.” Everyone agrees with Tobias on this call for sure. This has taken a toll on everyone. But it has also showed us what our enemies are fine with doing. It has taught us that we need to be even more careful.
We went back to the trees. We couldn’t care less about getting food by now. We couldn’t dare eat after what we just saw. We wander around trying to find a place where we can set up a permanent camp for everyone who wants to get out of the fence and lead lives outside the factions. To be able to set up their own rules. We must have walked for four or five hours because the sun is high in the sky by now and we are all starting to recover by now. Our stomachs don’t care any more about what we saw, they want food. Uriah is walking a little bit ahead of us when he shouts something about apples and fruit trees. Could he be going crazy because of hunger? We run to find him stand within an acre or more of fruit trees. The fruits is sitting there plumply waiting to be eaten. It would be perfect if we could find somewhere near here to set up that camp but only if there was other sources of food. We all start to climb the trees and feast on different bites of deliciousness. The fruit might not be as good as meat or steak but it is good to have something in our stomachs. We ate cherries, apples, some pears, peaches and a mixture of other fruits to eat.
After we have filled our stomachs to the point that we can’t eat anything for at least a few hours we look for good spots to set up camp. We’re going to go check out the farm that Tobias saw earlier when It gets dark outside. We have to see if we can get any other foods like some sort of protein. As we look for a campsite we stumble upon a freshwater stream. We all stick our faces in drinking as much as we possibly can. Than we jump in downstream to wash up. Feeling quenched and refreshed we continue our search. We stumbled upon more villages like the first, but there were some where people hadn’t died and were trying to find someone to help them. Christina must not have had the stomach to watch that woman break down and start crying because she ran and helped her to calm down. She pointed the woman toward another clump of fruit trees we found and told the woman everything would be fine.
It was getting dark and we still hadn’t found a possible campsite so we headed toward the farm. Because of all the villages around that had just been massacred we were being even more cautious than usual. When we got onto the farm itself, it looked abandoned. We checked the house and found it void of any decorations. Unless the whole world has Abnegation’s interior design the inhabitants left their animals and crops to wither away to nothing. That’s lucky for us because we have a good supply of anything we need now. As long as we can find the perfect spot to set up our camp.
“I think we should stay the night here just so we don’t get caught somewhere between here and the other campsite. As soon as we get a spot for the camp though we need to head to te fence and around that area to see if anyone has gotten out. If any one has we need to get them to camp immediately.” Tobias seems to know what to do in every situation that is thrown at him.No one had a problem with that especially with the first part. We were all tired and full since we had ate and drank as much water as our bodies could handle for the day.
I woke up again at sunrise but this time I wasn’t alone. Christina was staring at the sunrise. She looked sad and reminiscent.
“I miss him so much Tris. I wish he were here right now. I wouldn’t care if I survived if I knew I could be with him for even just a little while.”
Christina, Will would not want you to kill yourself. He would want you to survive and to try to help as many people as you can to survive, he would want you to be smart about this.”
We walked around for a little while in the woods between some of the farm’s fields and to our surprise there was a huge protected plot of earth where we could build buildings and set up the perfect camp.
“Ok. Now it’s time to figure out who is going to go on the rescue mission and who is going to stay and start to building our camp. Of course i’m going but I need one other person to go. Tris would you like to go on the first one?” Uriah seemed upset that he had to stay but Lynn and Cristina seemed fine with staying and working on the camp. Before we left Uriah and Tobias went and got a cow from the farm for meat for the next day or two since Uriah and the others couldn’t stray far from the camp. We started to walk back toward the fence with a rucksack full of jerky, fruit, and bread from the farm. All we had between us otherwise was his gun and my knife.
By nightfall we had already made it back to the original campsite. We ate a little jerky a piece of fruit between us and a little bit of bread. We stayed there for the rest of the night and woke up before the sunrise the next morning.
When we had reached the fence we found Some eager people ready to be saved. There were six Dauntless, three very young Erudite, a Candor, and no Amity, Abnegation or factionless.Tobias told them about the camp and how we were going to take anybody willing there so we can save the world in whatever way possible. One of the older Dauntless, Fred, offered to stay and gather up groups that wanted to get out if a couple of us would come every few days to take them out. With twelve of us it should have been easy to spot but no one did. We had just hid deep enough tree cover when a large group of cars came rolling down the path toward the Amity compound. We either would have to make a straight shot to the big camp or we would have to find a way to fit every one over in the small one. We had to see what would make sense with the group we had this time. All of the people who got out his time could have had their choosing ceremony this year or they were younger by one or two years. We just have to make a straight shot to the big camp. We came so close to that first village and a couple of people started to run towards it. Before we could stop them they were in the village and saw what had happened. Tobias stayed with the rest of the group and I went in to get the other two out. I am not going on any other missions I can’t stand to think of this happening every time. To have to run into this village that now is filled with the scent of rotting, bug-infested bodies of people who were murdered. I tell the two that ran in not to tell the others what they saw there. We made it back to the camp and made everyone eat. While we ate we learned the names of the newest members of our sort of tribe. The five Dauntless were fifteen year-olds, Maya, Ron, and Zoey. The other two, Jaclynn and Antonio, were thirteen. The Erudite were all twelve, Rhonda, Jaquinta, and Edwardo. The one Candor girl was Gloria. They all said they were Divergent, and wanted to break out of having to be with a single characteristic all their life.
“Well, all of you have to work for a while. We need to start to build lodging for everyone. Someone will have to work at the farm. If there are many more people coming we will need to work on the productivity of the plants and animals if we are going to have enough food. Everyone will have to do their part no matter what it is. We will not fight because we are like a family now we are together no matter what and we no longer have factions holding us to specific jobs. We will do whatever were best at and that is what we will try to stick to. Anyone who does not do their part will not get any say in what we do.” Uriah likes to have the power he does but next time he can go to with Tobias. Jaquinta says she wants to work with the productivity of the plants and animals. That she showed great signs of being a great biotechnician but Jeanine told her parents that even though she showed the signs she was not fit to work in that profession. “Ok, well when you go to the farm to do your genetics stuff you will need to be accompanied.”
In the morning we looked at what had to be done. We need to figure out all the food we have available. Than we need to figure out where each building is going to be and how many people should be able to be lodged in each one. We also figured out who would do what. Tobias and Uriah are going to go to bring people to the camp. Jaquinta and Edwardo would do genetic stuff with the food products. Rhonda would work with Christina on clothing and bedding and cooking. Zoey and Maya would patrol and keep people from killing one another. Ron, Jaclynn, and Antonio will help to construct the building. Gloria and I would help to settle everyone in and assign new people their jobs.
Two weeks later we have the first three cabins completed and every four days Uriah and Tobias went to get the groups from Fred. After a week the groups stopped completely and Fred came with the last group. We have been doing well. No one has fought or done anything stupid. We are still waiting for our GM plants and animals but it shouldn’t take much longer because other Erudite knew how to make different things grow faster. We will be able to survive for as long as we need to. The human race has killed itself out except for us from what we know of but, we don’t know where others might be. We found the people who killed all the villagers in every village around. They had hung themselves. I guess the rest of the people in the fence will have descendants to save us when something like that happens to us.
