So, I just found this very interesting video and remembered that there are quite a few people on here who also know a lot about this particular subject. I'm actually trying to have a better understanding of it myself so my OCs and cats in AUs and their family trees no longer look completely insane although sometimes they will continue to do so as these are still fantasy books about battle cats.

I watched that yesterday, and I could be wrong, but I think they're incorrect on some of their points. Like, with the calico/tortie mother, and the sons taking which color from her, that the father also has, that's true for daughters, but calico/tortie cats can have both ginger and black sons in a litter, no matter what color the father is, so Lionblaze could have been ginger. Also, Sandstorm was changed into a calico, and Firestar was changed into a brown tabby, so Leafpool could have been a brown tabby still. Other than that, it's an interesting and insightful video.

think of all the gingers, calicos, and torties we'd have....YES PLEASE. imagine if leafpool and squirrelflight were both torties? ugh, i love it.

It’s a fun video, but yeah, Webfoot is right, some of the information is wrong. Other than what Webfoot mentioned, they made Hollyleaf a calico tabby when she really still could’ve been black even with Leafpool being a tortie (even though like Webfoot said, Leafpool still could’ve been “brown”/black tabby). The explanation some of the genetics at the beginning is oversimplified and not entirely accurate, and it also bugs me how the creator dismisses the possibility of cats carrying recessive genes a lot. Some of these cats could possibly be solids (not tabbies) or have long fur if both of their parents carried the gene(s) but the creator usually doesn’t consider this, so some of these cats could’ve actually looked closer to how they do in canon.
I don’t mean to sound overly critical though, I do enjoy watching videos like this, I’m just saying this since you (OP) said you were interested in learning more about cat genetics. Feel free to PM me anytime if you have any questions or want help with cat genetics for your OCs or anything, by the way!

I will indeed get back to it after choosing which ones should have more realistic genetics but for now, I'm feeling like having some not so realistic designs for talking battle cats with an organized religion is fine/fun as well.
