I always felt like it wasn't shown much in the series but got mentioned in some Field Guides and such as if they were so very close before the BrambleSquirrelAsh love triangle happened when they had only three tiny scenes together in Firestar's Quest.
Scene 1: Ashfur tells Brambleclaw that his vigil is over and he'll help him find a place to sleep in the warriors den. Scene 2: They attack Smudge together while out on patrol and are in agreement about him. Scene 3: Brambleclaw sits beside Ashfur during a Clan meeting.
Granted, there probably were times with them getting along offscreen such as speaking to each other in private while doing their dailly duties as warriors but none of it is shown much except for these scenes. Then, in the TNP arc, Ashfur frequently speaks highly about Brambleclaw during Twilight which was at the time Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight didn't get along and Ashfur was the one being on good terms with her. I'm actually a little disappointed that there were no further scenes of their "friendship" happening in the Past portion of Graysripe's Vow that took place around the exact same time as when Firestar and Sandstorm were going on their mission to save SkyClan and would have been the perfect opportunity to somewhat compare their previous positive relationship to the current obviously negative one in the Now portion of Graystripe's SE and also the TBC arc.

There's also Ashfur implying he'd like Brambleclaw as deputy when Graystripe gets captured:
And defending him from Spiderleg, again suggesting he'd like Brambleclaw as deputy:
Given that Ashfur was causing trouble by trying to get Dustpelt appointed as deputy back in Graystripe's Vow, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say he wouldn't try something similar with Brambleclaw. It's a shame that we didn't see a few more of their scenes together in that book either, given they remembered that Ashfur and Cloudtail were close, but oh well.
