It was a dark and stormy night, the night of the final battel. The Dark Forest was rising up just like the gamers. There was death left and right. Blood flowed like a waterfall. Screams ripped through the air like sonic jetplanes breaking the sound barrier. Chaos reigned.
And that's how it was when Sandstorm was confronted by the most dreaded warrior of the Dark Forest, Mapleshade.
"Ah, a young, pretty she-cat," Mapleshade hissed. "I'm going to enjoy this."
"Not as much as you think," Sandstorm spat. "And who are you calling young? I've got grandchildren that look like they could be around your age."
"Oh, you have grandchildren?" Mapleshade purred. "That must be nice. Are they in good health?"
"They are," Sandstorm replied slowly, unaware that Hollyleaf was getting mauled to death by Hawkfrost as they spoke. "One was born-"
"WISH MY CHILDREN LIVED TO GIVE ME SOME, BITCH," Mapleshade screeched as she pounced. Sandstorm snarled as the malicious tortoiseshell's claws shredded through her pelt. She leapt backwards and readied her own battle position. The fight was on-
"STOP!" a familiar voice yowled. Sandstorm's eyes widened. Mapleshade rolled her eyes. "Oh, f*ck off." Both warriors turned to face the owner of the third voice, who charged toward them with widened eyes and outstretched claws.
"Spottedleaf..." both of them hissed.
"Mapleshade, stop!" Spottedleaf yowled. "You can't hurt Sandstorm!"
"Why not?" Mapleshade sat down and examined her claws in annoyance. Sandstorm closed her eyes and started counting to ten.
"Because she makes Firestar happy!" Spottedleaf retorted. "I can't let you-"
Sandstorm's eyes snapped open. "Can you PLEASE butt out of my marriage, Aunty Spottedleaf?" she snapped. "This really doesn't have anything to do with you."
Spottedleaf blinked, hurt. "I'm not trying to hurt your marriage. I just wanted to-"
"I know you wanted to help!" Sandstorm screeched. "I also know that you can't keep your paws out of my daughters' and grandson's dreams! I said butt OUT!"
"Oh, sweet Sandstorm," Spottedleaf cooed soothingly. "Don't worry, I don't intend anything wrong by it. I just wanted to make sure that your family is as safe and happy as possib-"
"She said butt the f*ck out, Spottedleaf," Mapleshade interrupted, standing up again. "Your obsession with Firestar and his entire family is frankly creepy as shit. Can't you just respect her wishes and leave them some space?"
Spottedleaf scowled. "It's NOT creepy! I loved Firestar and he cared for me, too! There's nothing wrong with me looking after his family!"
Mapleshade hissed in frustration. Sandstorm started chanting her old coping mantra underneath her breath. "I'm not a *uck, I'm not a c*ck, I'm not a cu*k, I'm not a cuc*..."
"Besides, you're not so innocent yourself, Mapleshade!" Spottedleaf continued, her eyes stretched wide with righteous anger. "You haunted your former mate's entire bloodline just for revenge! You're even more obsessed than you claim I am!"
Mapleshade rolled her eyes. "Yeah, and I very clearly earned my place in the Dark Forest. What's your point?"
Spottedleaf spluttered, but a new voice intruded on the conversation before she could even attempt to reply. "What's going on here?" Spottedleaf and Sandstorm both jumped up as they saw Firestar stroll into the conveniently mostly empty clearing.
"I'm not a cu- I mean, Firestar, get out of here!" Sandstorm yelled.
"And leave you two to fight this Dark Forest warrior by yourselves?" Firestar replied. He unsheathed his claws. "Not a chance."
Mapleshade yawned. "Sweet to hear that you're every bit the hero these two meow about as being worthy to share a nest with, but I think she meant 'get away from the medicine cat'."
"She did NOT!" Spottedleaf spat. "My love, the Dark Forest warrior is trying to trick you!"
"Actually, I didn't really mean to say that aloud, but she was right," Sandstorm muttered beneath her breath.
Firestar blinked. "I'm confused. Is that she-cat a Dark Forest warrior or not?"
"I am but that's not the point." Mapleshade sighed. "The point is that you and your mate clearly have some issues to work out regarding one obsessive medicine cat that wants to have your babies and doesn't mind acting like she's your daughter's and grandson's spirit mom."
"I am NOT!" Spottedleaf cried. "I'm just watching over them because I love you!"
Sandstorm started chanting again. "I'm not a *uck I'm not a c*ck I'm not a cu*k I'm not a cuc*..."
Firestar blinked again. "Sandstorm? Are you alright? Why are you saying such-"
They were interrupted again by Graystripe bursting into the clearing. "Firestar! And Sandstorm! There you are-" He blinked. "Is that Spottedleaf?"
Spottedleaf nodded. "Hello, Graystripe."
Mapleshade's eyes glinted with sudden interest. "Graystripe, eh? Silverstream's boyfriend, Feathertail's and Stormfur's father?"
Graystripe scowled. "Yes? And who are you?"
Mapleshade shrugged. "Nobody. I don't have any beef with you personally, just your former mate and kids. Sorry-not-sorry about Silverstream's and Feathertail's demises, by the way. Though I know what it's like to lose a kid."
Graystripe's eyes blazed for a second before he remembered why he'd been searching for Firestar and Sandstorm, then his tail drooped. "Listen, we can let you go for now. Firestar, Sandstorm, come quickly. Hollyleaf is-"
Spottedleaf gasped. "Oh, no! She's hurt, isn't she! Oh, I should have been there-"
"I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!" Sandstorm screeched. "Just go away! Get OUT of the lives of my family! Keep your nose out of it! Leave!"
Firestar was shocked. "Sandstorm, listen-"
"No, YOU listen!" Sandstorm snarled. "I've gone pretty much our entire married life trying to deal with this! She used to seek you out in DREAMS! Then after she said she'd stop, she started visiting our daughter instead! And then our grandson! Does NOTHING about this seem off to you?"
Spottedleaf started tearing up. "BECAUSE I CARE! There's nothing wrong with doing something because of love-"
"Hi," Mapleshade said.
"-or for watching over your loved ones to make sure they're safe!"
"YOUR loved ones?" Sandstorm screeched. "You've never even MET Leafpool - much less Jayfeather - while you were alive. Starclan's kits, you barely knew FIRESTAR when you were alive! You keep on forcing your way into our family affairs! How is it in any way REASONABLE for me to have to deal with the fact that my f*cking AUNT who was in love with my husband keeps peering over my shoulder because she just can't let go?"
There was a tense silence as everyone present digested Sandstorm's outburst.
"Your... aunt?" Firestar shuddered.
"Damn..." Mapleshade muttered, shaking her head. "I think you need therapy. And that that medicine cat needs a restraining order."
"You're just paranoid!" Spottedleaf tearfully wailed. "We. Were. In. LOVE! It ISN'T unreasonable for me to care about my darling's children and grandchildren! In another life, they might have been mine! There's nothing wrong with it!"
"Hold up," Firestar raised his tail. "Your AUNT?"
Sandstorm glared at him for a second, unsure of where he was going with this before she realized that she'd just admitted to what she'd been trying to keep under wraps for everyone's sanity. "Oh..."
"Please tell me she was at least from a younger litter," Firestar begged.
"She... wasn't." By now, Sandstorm was mumbling. "My father and Spottedleaf were littermates."
Graystripe barfed. "WTF!"
"I need an adult," Firestar mewed plaintively.
"Uh..."
"An adult that isn't your aunt," he added hastily.
Spottedleaf was shocked at how everything had seemed to turn against her so quickly. "Firestar, my beloved, age is just a number!"
Mapleshade sighed, suddenly feeling every bit her age. "And the Dark Forest is just a place. I think I've seen enough." She turned to Sandstorm. "See about talking to a medicine cat or something. Bottling up those issues can't be that healthy." She jerked her head at Firestar, who was staring into the distance. "And see about one for him too. He might be stupid but suddenly finding out he was in a relationship as a youngster with somebody that much older than him can't be good for him."
Sandstorm, numb, nodded before going back to chanting "I'm not a **** I'm not a **** I'm not a **** I'm not a ****..."
Spottedleaf didn't like this at all. "Not so fast!" she cried, springing at Mapleshade with her claws out. "You ruined everything!"
Mapleshade sidestepped her furious assault and - with a single swipe - tore Spottedleaf's neck open. Normally, she would have taken great pleasure in inflicting a mortal wound on some cat, ANY cat... but the old tortoiseshell's heart just wasn't in it after what she'd just seen.
Spottedleaf collapsed, gagging on her own blood. She looked up at Mapleshade and spoke her last. "You sought out Sandstorm... because she had the life you never did... didn't you? And you killed me... because I tried to protect her."
Mapleshade snorted. "Actually, I just killed you because you're cringe."
Spottedleaf wheezed out her real last. "But you wanted to kill Sandstorm..."
"I literally had zero reason to attack Sandstorm specifically. Sure, she had a long, happy life, but so did a lot of other she-cats." She turned around to pad away into the darkness. "But tell yourself whatever you have to to convince yourself that you had to die today."
Spottedleaf turned her gaze to the traumatized Thunderclan leader and spoke her really real last. "I died... for love..." She sighed happily, then faded into nothing.
Graystripe barfed again.
