As suggested by Stick, I will be doing a character study on Daisy’s lone surviving kit, Mousewhisker next!
Mousewhisker is a big, muscular gray-and-white tom with green eyes. He is the son of Daisy and Smoky and the littermate of Berrynose and Hazeltail. His half-siblings are Rosepetal, Toadstep, Daisy, and Coriander.
Kithood
Mousewhisker is born as Mouse to Daisy and Smoky in the horseplace. Not wanting Twolegs to take her kits, Daisy takes Mouse and his littermates to ThunderClan. He is then renamed Mousekit accordingly. He and his littermates were caught and scolded by Brightheart for messing around in the medicine cat den. After the battle with the badgers, Daisy takes her kits back to the horseplace out of fear for their safety, which upsets Mousekit and his siblings. However, Brambleclaw and Cloudtail later convince her to come back much to Mousekit’s excitement. He seems to be a happy kit who prefers the Clan life over the loner life.
Apprenticeship
Mousekit later appeared in the Power of Three arc as an apprentice named Mousepaw. His mentor is Spiderleg, who later fathers Mousepaw’s half-siblings. He introduces Lionpaw to the his first gathering. He appears to have a thing for Minnowpaw, a RiverClan apprentice. Later, he and Cinderpaw are assessed to catch as much prey as they can. To prove that he can catch a squirrel, Mousepaw climbs the Sky Oak, but freezes in fear at the top and cannot get down. Cinderpaw climbs the Sky Oak to help him down, but she falls and breaks her leg. Mousepaw later receives his warrior name of Mousewhisker. His half-siblings, Rosekit and Toadkit, are also born. He appears to be a standard apprentice during this time, friendly and excitable, but also maybe a bit reckless at times with his crush on Minnowpaw (which would be against the code) and climbing the Sky Oak not knowing if he could make his way down.
Mentorship and Dark Forest Training
In the Omen of the Stars arc, Mousewhisker is now the mentor to Bumblepaw. When Dovepaw tells the Clan about the brown animals blocking the stream, Mousewhisker sarcastically asks if they were Twolegs who had sprouted wings. His apprentice later becomes a warrior. Mousewhisker and his niece Cherrypaw accidentally eat hemlock, but Cinderheart saves them. He begins training in the Dark Forest but not much is given about his training. He goes to the WindClan border with some other trainees to practice battle moves. When the Great Battle begins, he is hiding beneath a bush with Birchfall and Blossomfall, until Ivypool convinces them to fight for the Clans. Not much is seen of Mousewhisker, but his character seems somewhat consistent throughout. In Dovewing's Silence, Mousewhisker and the other former Dark Forest trainees struggle to regain the trust of their Clanmates, and they all swear an oath of loyalty to ThunderClan. Dovewing patrols with him and the rest of the trainees when Cherrypaw and Molepaw purposefully lead them towards a trapped fox. After they kill the fox, the apprentices apologize and the rest of the Clan forgives Mousewhisker and the former trainees. In Bramblestar's Storm, Mousewhisker tries to help Cherryfall when she gets stuck on a beam in the abandoned Twoleg nest, but he accidentally causes her to fall on Bramblestar, and he apologizes to her. After evacuating camp and setting up in the tunnels during the storm, he is often seen helping his Clan. He also fights beside Stoatfur in the battle against the badgers.
Faded Into the Background
Mousewhisker is very much in the background throughout the A Vision of Shadows arc. His sister Hazeltail and half-brother Toadstep die of greencough off-screen prior to this arc. He voices his doubt over Twigkit being special and often leads border patrols to keep an eye on the Kin. He doubts the Clans will ever be defeated by Darktail. This makes me think Mousewhisker may have a bit of a pessimistic nature. He is also later appointed the mentor to Plumpaw.
StarClan’s Disappearance and The Impostor
In The Broken Code, his apprentice Plumpaw is now a warrior named Plumstone. He is seen with his brother Berrynose sharing their concerns over the lack of connection with StarClan. Mousewhisker also becomes the mentor to Baypaw. He is seen by Bristlefrost in the Veil of Shadows battle, fighting off Dewspring. He survives the battle but his brother Berrynose and half-sister Rosepetal do not. Mousewhisker later agrees in favor of executing Ashfur in Bramblestar's body, believing that Bramblestar won't be coming back. Yet again, Mousewhisker seems to be a pessimist. He has a major role in Daisy’s Kin. He comforts his mother over the loss of Rosepetal and Berrynose and tries to make sure she stays busy. Daisy gets him to come along with Smoky, Sorrelstripe, and Alderheart to help with Coriander’s kitting. He is saddened when Coriander passes and helps with his new half-siblings. Daisy tries to get him to form a relationship with his father. It starts off awkward and Mousewhisker often seems to try to avoid Smoky, but Mousewhisker eventually shows to have a sort of respect for his father. I think Daisy’s Kin was necessary for Mousewhisker’s character because he had been pushed into the background for the longest time. I was happy to get more of his character when I read the novella and it made me like him more.
Overall, Mousewhisker has been pushed to the side for most of his development. I wish more of his Dark Forest training was shown and I wish the idea of him forming a relationship with Minnowtail was pursued. There’s a lot of wasted potential with his character, but I really like him especially after reading Daisy’s Kin and I really hope he doesn’t die anytime soon.
