As requested by Stick, I will be starting off with a character study on Sandynose: a character I wish hadn’t been killed off.
Sandynose is a light brown tabby tom with ginger legs and amber eyes. He is the son of Clovertail and Patchfoot. His sisters are Birdwing and Honeytail and his half-siblings are Rockshade, Bouncefire, and Tinycloud. He is mates with Plumwillow and the father to Finleap, Reedclaw, and Dewspring. His grandkits are Kitescratch, Turtlecrawl, Beekit, and Beetlekit.
His Introduction and Apprenticeship
Sandynose is first introduced when he was an apprentice in the SkyClan and the Stranger mangas. His first scene is when he breaks the warrior code. He and Nettlesplash are caught and punished for eating fresh-kill while still on patrol. He then later sneaks out with Nettlesplash and Birdpaw to eat kittypet food. However, he feels guilty about it and wants to come clean. Birdpaw mocks him for wanting to do so. Overall, Sandypaw comes off as a troublesome apprentice who often broke the rules, but did sometimes feel remorse for his actions and knew what he was doing was wrong.
The Journey
In Hawkwing’s Journey, Sandypaw now has his warrior name: Sandynose. He is also the mentor to Pebblepaw after Billystorm’s death. He scolds Hawkwing for being suspicious of Darktail, accusing him of being prejudiced against non-Clanborn cats. He later helps Hawkwing fight the rogues but later flees. His father, Patchfoot, dies in the battle and the Clan assumes that Sandynose is dead after his disappearance. Plumwillow has his kits while he is gone and Hawkwing steps up as their acting father. Sandynose later reunites with SkyClan while they are journeying. He thanks Hawkwing for keeping his family safe and reunited with Plumwillow and their kits. However, he is heartbroken when the kits prefer Hawkwing. Hawkwing reassures Reedkit, Dewkit, and Finkit that Sandynose will be a good father, telling them that they just need to give him a chance. After his kits become apprentices, he bonds with them more and they learn to appreciate him as their father. I really loved Sandynose in Hawkwing’s Journey. He seemed like a cat with a good head on his shoulders and I felt really bad when his kits wouldn’t accept him at first. He has seemed to matured a lot since his SkyClan and the Stranger appearances.
At The Lake
Upon Twigpaw’s decision to join SkyClan, Sandynose becomes her mentor. He is determined to train her as a SkyClan warrior despite being done with her training in ThunderClan. When Finpaw injures his tail, Sandynose gives Puddleshine approval to amputate it. As Finpaw recovers, Sandynose disapproves of his close relationship with Twigpaw, due to his suspicions that she was still loyal to ThunderClan. He confronts Twigpaw about their relationship, saying that she was distracting him from his training. Twigpaw later chooses to return to ThunderClan at her warrior ceremony. Sandynose defends her choice to Leafstar, explaining that she would be no use as a SkyClan warrior with half her heart in ThunderClan. Finpaw then leaves SkyClan to follow Twigpaw to ThunderClan, stating his family can manage without him. Sandynose later receives his third apprentice, Quailpaw. I can see why some people might not like Sandynose because of this portion of his life. He was often harsh and overcritical when it came to Twigpaw and even his own son Finpaw and their friendship, but I honestly enjoy him for it. I’m glad he at least defends her decision to rejoin ThunderClan.
StarClan’s Disappearance and The Impostor
Sandynose’s apprentice Quailpaw is now a warrior named Quailfeather. He agrees with Bramblestar’s impostor when it comes to punishing the codebreakers, saying that they should be exiled. He also doubts Rootpaw and Tree regarding Bramblestar’s spirit. However, he does later seemingly change his mind and side with the rebels in the battle in Veil of Shadows, along of the rest of his Clan. However, he is killed in this battle. I feel like he was a really good background character and his death was a waste of potential, along with many of the other deaths in this battle.
What do you think? What do you all think of Sandynose?
