When it comes to the types of media you consume, do you find yourself enjoying more things with a female lead, a male lead, or have you not really noticed a difference?
For me, I actually tend to favor stuff that has a female lead, minus YA books, but I stay away from that drama bore fest for the most part XD. But yeah, my favorite movies, shows, and animes (well, from the few that I've seen), all have female leads. Books on the other hand are about an even split.
Sorry for not adding non-binary+ on the list, I can't think of anything I've seen where the lead was non-binary, but it would be great to have some content!

It doesn't really matter to me in the long run as long as either lead types are developed well.

Male. The type of character arcs that men have (what it means and what it takes to be a hero/protector) speaks to me a lot. Female leads sometimes get that arc, but it's way more common with men. Like all the works I can think of off the top of my head with a male lead have some variation on that arc; whereas of the works I can think of with a female lead, most have some other theme driving the story.

Well written and/or likeable female leads will ALWAYS be the best, but they're very rarely well written so I usually lean towards male leads.

It depends on the story and character arc for me, I've enjoyed both male and female leads (and a lot of my favorite narratives are ones where you have both, like The Bartimaeus Sequence or Over the Garden Wall). I do tend to prefer female villains tho? idk why exactly

Both can be good and both can be bad but I think male leads are typically better written. There are some outstanding female leads but there are some tropes to many books have that ruin female characters.
Of course there is also lots of Misogyny.

Usually female leads. Due to the sewage that is misogyny having long, long since spilt out into every nook and cranny of the world, it's not uncommon to find the male leads outshining the female ones. This is no fault of the character of course since they are fictional; those books are simply a product of our times. That is, unless the character is a Mary Sue, or is written with the intention of being one. Male, female, whoever, I find those boring as heck. I like a character that has depth - a rich personality, an interesting backstory (only as a bonus), a strong sense of self, believability. Give me an interesting character and I'd gladly read about them. Just know that if I had a magic wand to wave around, I would probably make them physically female, especially if they are the main protagonist. There's plenty of Nathan Drake clones running around, we definitely need more female representation, along with all other minority groups.

Female lead for sure. I would much rather have a female lead and most content I consume has female leads or an assorted cast (meaning there isn't 1 main character per se and the mixture of boys to girls is generally equal) Most anime/manga/video games/shows I watch tend to have female leads. And in a video game I'll always choose the girl option (RIP to male Byleth from FE3H because I forget that man exists lmaooooo) But I also really enjoy romance/slice of life which tend to have more female leads. And I also like wlw romance since that is what I relate to the most so. Unfortunately in most video games you play as a dude tho RIP. Shout out to my girl Aloy from horizon zero dawn tho. Love her. And depending on the game there's usually some good female supporting cast I can get behind.

I don't have any hzd stuff because I didn't get into print buying until I played persona 5 lol but I loves that game. Definitely one of the most fun I've ever played. I'll get the second one if I can ever get my hands on a PS5 which will probably never happen. (Apparently its supposed to come out on ps4 too but my ps4 is basically on her last legs so I'd rather just update to the new system)

I'm more of into the plots and elements surrounding the character rather than the main character themselves tbh. I mean, if they had more books where males had close friendships with people, and that wasn't all action, adventure, and fantasy, then I might enjoy them more. However, some male-lead books are great like Hatchet, The Outsiders, etc. That's just for books though, as for shows and movies, other than the sports ones, which my favorite has a female lead, 90% of things I watch have a female lead, but if they had a male lead, I might like it just the same, idk.

I'm the opposite. I tend to consume more character driven content. Like. I really enjoyed K-On and there 100% isn't a single plot in that show. It is all about enjoying the characters and their little interactions and day to day lives. Would I have enjoyed the cast as much if they were boys? Maybe. But who knows. Same things goes for Laid-back Camp or Flying Witch. But I did watch Outburst Dreamer Boys and that show was fun. But the MC was a girl who was just hanging out with a bunch of nerdy boys avfksbfks so idk if that counts. Most other shows I enjoy have a split cast that's usually 50/50

Most other shows I enjoy have a split cast that's usually 50/50 Same actually, I tend to care wayyy more about the characters than the plot, which is another reason why I like female centric ones, because in those, they tend to talk more with other people, whereas male focused ones are more oriented in action, at least from what I've noticed. Like in Warriors, I could honestly not care less about the prophecies, the major plot, etc, what I look for are the character interactions, especially the background characters. To me, a story is nothing without a strong cast of characters, well it's something, but not something that interests me.
