Other than all my other problems with Squirrelflight. Her freaking out over the possibility of Bramblestar outlasting her just felt foolish to me. Squirrelflight, did you forget your dad was leader? That he died before your mother? (Like I imagine normally this would be a concern for most cats but with Squirrelflight’s experience, her worries are the exact opposite of the reality she experienced.) Onestar died before Whitetail. (Provided if she is his canon mate, but I know it’s a popular opinion,) The only other leaders she has seen in her lifetime were typically single cats: Tallstar, Leopardstar, and Blackstar.
A side note: I wonder how Leafstar felt watching Squirrelflight tell her daughter to keep a potentially harmful secret from her mate. Placing all the burden on her sole daughter like that. I wonder if Leafstar was remembering her lost daughters, Stormheart and Firefern in that moment. And if she considers Squirrelflight a more negative version of how Sharpclaw first behaved in testing her leadership? (Except Squirrelflight isn’t even doing that either.)
Also forgot to note, I am not done with SQH. I’m near half way done though. So Uh, I don’t really want further spoilers on the later half.

Honestly, her thinking in that book was just...dumbfounding. And the fact that she was so upset at the idea of Bramble outliving her, moving on, and finding happiness again just rubbed me the wrong way. It's like she would be the complete opposite of Silverstream. Silverstream was encouraging of Graystripe and Millie's relationship as long as he was happy, and Gray made it clear he loved them both. Like I get it's a normal type of "fear" but at the same time it was just nonsensical considering the circumstances.
As for Leafstar, I don't think she approved at all. She even mentions how Squirrel was going behind Bramblestar's back, her leader, and she didn't seem to approve of it. So I doubt she'd approve of Squirrel using her position as deputy, and Sparkpelt's mother, to convince her to stay silent and lie to Bramble and the others.

I genuinely did not remember Squirrelflight breaking down over the idea that Bramblestar might outlive her. I must have bleached that part of the book from my brain.

I genuinely did not remember Squirrelflight breaking down over the idea that Bramblestar might outlive her. I must have bleached that part of the book from my brain. It was there! It was during one of their earlier arguments that she then freaks out mentally that Bramble will outlive her and move on.

Page 25-26 They hardly seemed to notice she was there. She felt barely there herself. The argument with Bramblestar buzzed in her head. He might have kits with another cat when I’m dead. She’d never really considered before that he would likely outlive her—by several lifetimes. Her heart sank as she understood suddenly, for the first time, that she would never become ThunderClan’s leader. The kit good dreams she’s shared with Leafpool would come to nothing. Bramblestar would outlive her, and she’d only ever be the leader’s mate. Sadness swamped her. What would she leave behind when she died? Would another cat replace her as soon as she was gone?
It then goes on to say that her heart ached to lie beside Bramblestar so she sleeps in the warrior’s den. The beginning of this part is just Bramblestar discussing a meeting with Harestar and the other leaders/deputies. Meanwhile Squirrelflight fixated on something else entirely because it’s how she is.
Squirrelflight also seems to forget she’d be known as Bramblestar’s first deputy. Honestly it’s like that role doesn’t even matter to her. She complains later that being deputy isn’t enough and wants to be leader. Leader sounds like it wouldn’t be enough for her, just make this gal into a Sister or perma queen, she’d be happier in that role at this point.

Its just such a weird book to me, I feel like squirrelflight and bramblestar are really OOC.. anyone else feel like that? Bramblestar just seems more worried and overtly anxious on keeping a fragile peace. Also not helped with having to deal with his nephew, Tigerstar. So he seems more in character, just probably more harsh since his deputy is being a regular disobedient warrior instead.

Its just such a weird book to me, I feel like squirrelflight and bramblestar are really OOC.. anyone else feel like that? To a degree? It single-handedly drove me to write my "Squirrelflight never grew up" piece. There are still questionable actions here and there, but if SH wasn't canon, then some of her other decisions could be rationalized away.

It makes even less sense because I recently read in one of my animal psychology books that females tend to outlive males most of the time. Although this doesn't neccessarily have to apply to the Warriors universe due to nine lives and other such magical stuff.

It was bad.
I didn't feel bad for Squirrelflight at all.
Tigerheartstar was being awful as always. Dovewing belittling others too? This book did no service to her.
Bramblebrat was in character.
The only cats I felt anything for in this book were Sparkpelt and Tree.
At least Leafpool's death had some soul to it.
