Here’s to my favorite TBC era cat (sorry Rootspring and Flipclaw-)
What do you guys think about our rebellious LionCinder kit?
I personally love her a lot. I was worried about her chararacter as first because I thought her and Bristlefrost would have a jealousy/rivalry over Stemleaf, but I’m so glad that didn’t happen. I really started liking her in The Silent Thaw, when she and Stemleaf are the first cats to really start rebelling against the imposter Bramblestar. Still, I felt like she didn’t have enough screentime for me to LOVE her. I felt bad when she got punished for simply accidentally crossing the WindClan border.
Then comes Veil of Shadows and the assassination attempt on imposter Bramblestar’s life. She, Stemleaf, Conefoot, Dappletuft, and Kitescratch ambush the imposter to try to kill him. However, the imposter overpowers them with help of ThunderClan cats and Spotfur and Kitescratch are the only ones that survive. I knew either Spotfur and Stemleaf were bound to die, but I was still heartbroken over Stemleaf’s death. I was personally disappointed with Bristlefrost’s reaction to her former crush’s death, but Spotfur’s reaction pleased me and was well-written.
Then comes Darkness Within, where I REALLY start liking Spotfur. I really felt bad for her this book. She seemed so out of it on the trip to find the Sisters along with Bristle, Root, and Needle. But when it was confirmed that she’s expecting Stemleaf’s kits, she freaks out. She doesn’t want to raise kits without Stemleaf, because they would only remind her of the life she could’ve had with him. She also feels ThunderClan is an unsafe place to raise kits at the moment. She even seemingly attempts suicide/an abortion with the hawk. With the help of the Sisters and Bristlefrost, she learns to accept these kits.
She doesn’t get much screentime in The Place of No Stars, but it is revealed that her littermates, Flywhisker and Snaptooth, have left to become kittypets. She is understandably heartbroken. It seems like so much is going wrong for poor Spotfur. Also, she calls her father Lionblaze out on his BS which I absolutely loved.
Spotfur’s Rebellion is a good novella, especially when it comes to character content. I love Spotfur’s personality here as well as her bond with Stemleaf. I also found her sort of “rivalry” with Shellfur to be interesting and made me dislike him even more. I also liked when her and Stemleaf convinced Bramblestar not to send apprentices out alone during a harsh leaf-bare. It was great seeing some of her point of view of the whole rebellion against the imposter and this book only made me love her even more, although I believe the novella itself was the worst of the set.
