When Ashfurสผs body was found, Jayfeather picked up very strong emotions from Leafpool and thought that she may had been in love with him. I thought they'd use Ashfur as a red herring for the three's father, but this was quickly forgotten about and never mentioned again. I think it's super weird that they threw in this line and then never did anything with it. What do you think about this little scene?

I think they used it as a red herring in a sense as to why she was so upset, but in reality, it wasn't her having feelings for Ashfur, but because she found Hollyleaf's fur between his claws. Leafpool knew who his killer was before anyone else.

Leafpool knew who his killer was before anyone else. Leafpool had yet to find Hollyleaf's bit of fur when Jayfeather remarked her turmoil. In the prologue of Sunrise, which shows her sitting vigil, she is thinking about the wound she found on Ashfur's neck, then she notices the tuft. Back in Long Shadows, Jayfeather noted Leafpoool was acting strange before she even noticed the wound. I've never known what to make of that whole situation, meh. There's also a previous chapter in Long Shadows, not long after the fire scene, where Jayfeather felt Leafpool was getting overwhelmed by emotion. I thought that was because Squirrelflight told her she'd been basically forced to confess their secret, but apparently she wasn't aware of what happened back then.

I'm going to be honest here and confess that I would have actually kind of loved it if Ashfur had been the real father of The Original Three instead of Crowfeather because absolutely no one could have seen that coming. Him being the actual father of Leafpool's kits should have also made for an even more interesting plotline both for the kits and later in the TBC story arc.

Personally, I chalked it down to Leafpool being a very empathetic, loving, caring, compassionate and soulful cat.
She grieved over the lost lives of any warriors, and since Ashfur's was so unexpected and rather jarring, she might have felt the loss more deeply. That, or Jayfeather might have been extra sensitive to her feelings since he himself must have been feeling tense after the whole Ashfur drama ordeal.

Strange, I guess it's just one of those throwaway implied romances like Rose/Berry probably.

I THOUGHT THAT TOO! Looking back I probably should have known it was about Leafpool finding Hollyleaf's fur in Ashfur's paw, but the way it was written from Jayfeather's perspective sort of muddled it up, XD.

I always thought it was because Squirrel flight must have told Leafpool about the fire confession, and she became suspicious that Ashfur's consequent death was related to it. She could have been overcome with guilt and fear at what it cost to keep the secret hidden.
