So I reread RoS recently which was a huge nostalgia bomb (I used to check it out at my school library like every month as a wee lass alongside the Graystripe trilogy). I'm curious what you guys think of Scourge's backstory and character development? What would you add or change?

for some reason, i feel like darktail and scourge r similar. darktail just has a clan parent that abandoned him and his mother, meanwhile scourge was beaten up by a clan cat as a kid.
i just wish scorge knew about firestar being his half brother. maybe he would be more rageful if he knew that his brother had a better life than he did?

I think The Rise of Scourge is a good book, since it clearly tells us that his actions weren't justified and he was a very bad cat. His backstory in itself was also quite creative.

I would make him be a bad cat from the start willingly going into the city in search of power after not being satisfied with his kitty pet life

It's not the best manga now (Because other ones have hit that mark for me now that more are out) but it was certainly one of the better ones at the time. I like Scourge's backstory and I'm pretty satisfied with what we were given.

I like it a lot and how it deals with his fall into being a villain pretty organically. Unlike other baddies, we actually get to see some reasoning for it, namely that he had to fake it 'till he made it to survive. His first kill could even be considered justifiable, when he defends his subjects from Brokenstar's goons. But it's easy to see how power could corrupt him.

I like that Scourge was a cat that held no regrets in his change from a timid kit to a cold-hearted yet strangely competent leader. The power he gained from his kills and deeds was used to further not just him, but the cats he gained as followers. Scourge was cruel and cold and hardened from his childhood and never turned back, never wavered in his goals and never hesitated to get his deeds done. He was completely irredeemable and he relished in it, and for that, he’s still one of my favorite characters in the series. Firestar killing Tigerstar would have been nice, but Tigerstar was always just a generic villain to Firestar that the whole clan needed to take down. To Scourge, Tigerstar was the cat that traumatized him, cemented the cruelty in the world that Scourge unfairly received, and tore apart that last shred of innocence that he never got back. Scourge killing the cat that brutalized him as a kit is satisfying in itself, hence why I loved that twist as a kid.

I think it would have been cool if Smudge briefly mentioned hearing about a cat called Tiny getting attacked by forest cats, when he is warning Rusty about how dangerous the clans are. Other than that I think his backstory is pretty decent! My class of Japanese 5th graders love him lmao, he has those edgy anime boy vibes.

Unless there's a timeline goof in both BP and TROS, Scourge was considerably older than Firestar. He was a kit (probably 5-6 moons old) when Tigerstar was still an apprentice, and iirc (judging by other characters) that was around two or three years before Rusty left his housefolk, putting Scourge around the same age as Whitestorm. So it happened well before Smudge was alive --and there were no witnesses, anyways.
