Okay, so, at the end of Winds of Change, Mudclaw tells Onestar that he'll watch over him and that they'll keep WindClan safe together. But what if—and bear with me here—what if this was all a lie and Mudclaw went back on his promise when he started to possess Onestar in a similar way Cinderpelt did Cinderheart? A cat who's mostly in control of their own thoughts in feelings, but occasionally, the cat possessing them take over. What if it was Mudclaw who was responsible for Onestar cutting off ties with Firestar, Mudclaw who launched an attack on ThunderClan, and Mudclaw who refused to give ShadowClan herbs? All to ruin Onestar's reputation and get revenge on Tallstar. And Onestar can do nothing about it. Ashfur may have perfected it, but never forget that Mudclaw was the OG possessor.

That would've been fun.
Like Ashfur's all "Har har har I'm the first to figure out how to possess a body!" "No you're not" says Onestar. He divided in two or whatever

While I kind of like that theory, it doesn't change the fact that Onestar already sucked way back when he was Onewhisker with the whole "abandoning Darktail as a kit" situation so him getting possessed by Mudclaw wouldn't be much of an excuse because he's still a coward who rejected his mate and remaining son without the former WindClan deputy ever being able to be resonsible for it. They can both be horribe cats on their very own, in my opinion.

That theory sounds great and hilarious but I'd rather not go down the route of blaming Mudclaw for Onestar's own actions (even if I don't like Mudclaw myself lol).

saw one of my beloved tumblr mutuals mention this lol so i decided to offer my own two cents. i'm 100% serious here not doing A Funney like earlier
1. onestar's decline makes absolute sense, and is clearly the result of the situation he is placed in. onestar went like that because of the stresses of a leadership he was not equipped to handle. he had no deputy experience, and several lines in starlight imply onestar did not want to be leader (note how nervous he is mentioned to be when he is about to go to the moonpool). in addition, he likely knew that much of his clan still did not believe him to be rightful leader, and acted out not only to appease them but also out of fear of another revolt. in fact, i would argue onestar to be one of the most well-written characters, going from essentially a windclan brackenfur to something very shakespearan. onestar attacking thunderclan, refusing shadowclan herbs... it all becomes abundantly clear when one realizes the paranoia engulfing this cat. he needed no outside influence- his turn from friend to enemy is most powerful and makes the most sense when it is entirely his reactions to the situations he is put in.
2. mudclaw would have no reason to possess him. mudclaw's anger stems from the feeling that onestar and firestar were making up the claim to leadership. while mudclaw is stubborn and quick to temper, the reason he had the rebellion was because he genuinely believed firestar and onestar were lying about tallstar's deathwish, not because he didn't like onewhisker in particular. (we even see him get along w/ one in several pre-tallstar's death scenes.) with tallstar there to confirm that no, they weren't lying, mudclaw's anger is dispelled. and mudclaw clearly sees at the end what he did was wrong. he would have no reason to go bac on that, and afaik judging from his multiple starclan appearances he has no ill will towards the clans (think of the bit in night whispers where he appears specifically to discuss how the clans need to work together to stop the dark forest).
3. i'm sorry but deciding to remove onestar's frankly fascinating character arc for 'ok but what if he was possessed' is... boring. one of the actually well written characters and wc fans think 'nah let's get rid of his compelling qualities and just make him -possessed-'. very sad

I thought the Pepe Silvia meme at the end of original post would've given away that this was a joke, so I'm honestly surprised a few of you apparently took this seriously.

It's a funny theory, but I don't think it's true. We know what Onestar's reason was. He wanted the respect of his Clanmates and other Clans. Onestar is a foxheart and is 100% responsible for his own actions.
