if a leader (edit) retired or ran away with like 3 lives left, the next leader would only get 6...? is this right?
i think it'd be pretty interesting to see how this would work in the series. two cats out there with multiple lives.

I don't know how it works now, but back in the day, if a leader had any more than one life left, the next cat didn't get any extras.

Well this happened with Sunstar. Pinestar left with his one life and Sunstar then had eight lives remaining.

It might be because Pinestar actively stepped down too. We never see leaders step down, so it's hard to know how it works otherwise I know Rowanstar returned all of his lives but one, I believe, to Starclan...and then he died so Tigertrash could be magically granted all 9. In Nightstar's case, Brokenstar hadn't stepped down or given his lives back, so Starclan still saw him as leader. If he'd stepped down, I'm assuming Nightstar would have gotten 8 lives

I see why Nightstar was so desperate to kill Brokenstar. Honestly, Nightstar would have probably been a really solid leader too

In Nightstar's case, Brokenstar hadn't stepped down or given his lives back, so Starclan still saw him as leader. If he'd stepped down, I'm assuming Nightstar would have gotten 8 lives I think it also has to do with the fact that Nightstar was never a deputy. And StarClan is all about warrior code, so they can't or won't give cats who haven't been fulfilling the role of deputy 9 lives, because they haven't trained to be leader or something.
