There was a post earlier about rule 14 so I decided to make my own on another rule, with permission, of course!
The 13th rule of the warrior code reads:
I have always been a critic of this part of the code. Actually, a few years ago back in 2018, I wrote an OC fanfiction that eventually questions this rule.
My fanfiction follows the story of Adderkit, the illegal son of ShadowClan’s leader, Hawkstar, and medicine cat, Acornfall. Due to birth complications, his littermates all die but he survives with a slightly injured jaw that make his teeth stick out. Acornfall lies that he found him alone while looking for herbs. So, believing he must be a lost loner or rogue kit, a queen named Ivycloud takes him in along with her newborn kits, Ashkit and Marshkit. He grows up believing that Ivycloud and her mate Frogleap are his parents.
Early in the prologue, Acornfall received a prophecy that states:
“Many animals such as foxes and badgers can be aggressive, but an adder will only bite when it has to. The inner turmoil of an adder is whether to bite or not, and sometimes it will make the wrong decisions.”
He and his foster siblings become apprentices at the beginning of the book, and he is apprenticed to a cat named Swiftfang. He quickly gains a rivalry with an older apprentice named Duskpaw, who thinks she is better than him and even picks on his jaw a bit. He, however, grows a friendship with Duskpaw’s sister Smokepaw and the other older warrior apprentice, Applepaw and his the medicine cat apprentice Cloudpaw.
Not long after, Adderpaw goes along with Ashpaw and Marshpaw to their first gathering. During this gathering, SkyClan’s evil leader Foxstar is introduced for the first time. Foxstar starts a battle between all 5 Clans at the gathering, some of the Clans sticking with SkyClan while ShadowClan and another Clan try to fight them off. Adderpaw’s foster mother Ivycloud and his foster brother Marshpaw are both killed in this battle, and Adderpaw accidentally kills a SkyClan apprentice after losing control of himself.
A lot of the rest is a bit filler but Adderpaw eventually walks in on Hawkstar and Acornfall chatting alone at night in secret when he is going to the dirtplace, which is when he finds out his true parentage. He is upset about it for a bit, but he learns to accept it soon enough. He keeps the secret safe. The older apprentices are now warriors: Applebranch, Smokefur, and Duskstorm. And Cloudpaw got her full medicine cat name: Cloudheart.
Adderpaw eventually gets his warrior name of Addertooth, and Ashpaw becomes Ashcloud. It isn’t long until Addertooth, Ashcloud, and Duskstorm are given apprentices of their own by Hawkstar. They are named Daisypaw (Addertooth), Luckypaw (Ashcloud), and Blackpaw (Duskstorm). There is a bit of a time skip and to skip the more unnecessary stuff, all of them become warriors. Not long after that, there was a dog attack on ShadowClan’s camp and the deputy Pineshade is killed. To Addertooth’s surpise, Hawkstar chooses Duskstorm to be her deputy over him. She accepts the role. Duskstorm eventually finds out about the secret when she walks in to tell Hawkstar something while she and Addertooth are having a private chat.
Duskstorm freaks out and the next day, she calls a Clan meeting herself and demands that Hawkstar either steps down from her position or leaves ShadowClan as a whole due to breaking the warrior code. Hawkstar refutes this, saying that she will be staying leader and claims that part of the code does not matter and that her word is the warrior code, not some rules made up many moons ago. This is where this part of the code is questioned. Angered by Hawkstar’s refusal, Duskstorm and her supporters chase Hawkstar out of camp. Acornfall chases after her. Duskstorm had the most supporters backing her, so she essentially overthrew Hawkstar and Acornfall for breaking the warrior code and saying that it didn’t matter.
Duskstorm becomes leader and is awarded with 3 lives, since Hawkstar still had 6. She chooses Ashcloud as her deputy. The dawn patrol the next morning then finds Hawkstar dead on the thunderpath border between ShadowClan and RiverClan border. Addertooth is angered. He becomes even more angered when Acornfall’s dead body is found in ShadowClan territory. Addertooth wrongfully believes that Duskstar killed him, when it was truly a fox. So, he ambushes her in her den the next night, ripping all 3 of her lives from her before she can get more lives after Hawkstar’s full death. He rolled in mud prior to hide his scent and ge moves her body and Duskstar’s death is blamed on a fox, the same one they believed killed Acornfall.
Ashcloud becomes leader named Ashstar and she names Swiftfang as her deputy. Addertooth later dies in a badger attack, protecting his Clan from danger as well as his kits with Smokefur.
So...
What do you think about this part of the code? Do you think it should be abolished? Do you think Hawkstar or Duskstar was in the right? Or even neither?
Let me know!
