I like these kinds of discussions for some reason so I thought I'd revive a thread idea I did last year! 🥰
What are some things (characters, designs, events, etc.) that you feel the fandom has skewed or...misinterpreted, through art, writing, whatever you get my point.
Istg every time I see someone say that Firestar died because a tree fell on him I almost bust a vein /j. That one really bugs me because it's so obvious he died from his wounds from the battle/the fight against Tigerstar.

The Firestar one bothers me too! Here’s a list of some others that bother me:
• This is a huuuge nitpick but... the position Tigerstar was in when Scourge killed him. I see many fan interpretations show him leaping for Scourge and then he slides under him, slashing his underside. When actually, Tigerstar was knocked down to his side with his belly exposed, and that’s when Scourge struck.
• Some of the fandom gets character ages / family confused and I feel annoyed to have to correct them, but their misconceptions would only lead to more confusion. I know it’s hard with so many cats, but as someone with this stuff memorized it can be infuriating.
• That Nightcloud actually loved Crowfeather. Neither of them actually loved each other. Crowfeather used her to prove his loyalty to WindClan and Nightcloud used him to have kits. It is said that she didn’t particularly like him. Most of WindClan didn’t, despite being the son of two honorable cats. If I see another MAP with Nightcloud crying and like “oh pity me!” because she thinks Crowfeather doesn’t love her back and loves Leafpool instead, I am going to snap. The fact that some people say Crowfeather was abusive to Nightcloud drives me insane.
• That Thistleclaw wasn’t that bad. I’ve seen people say that he’s “just aggressive” when he’s much more than that. If he was “just aggressive” he would’ve gone to StarClan! Also, by the way, Bluestar never chased him out of StarClan!
• Squirrelflight is not “oh so innocent” in regards to her relationship with Bramblestar. Yes, he is MUCH worse, but she’s not too good to him either. She’s not perfect or a complete victim. Nor does Bramblestar PHYSICALLY abuse Squirrelflight. • I’ve some people think the impostor Bramblestar is the real Bramblestar, and that bothers me. I always correct them, but I’ve had someone talk back to me about it.
• Many people exaggerate the actions of Mapleshade’s victims. Ravenwing is usually the most spot on. However, most interpretations show Frecklewish getting angry at Mapleshade for no reason and/or have Appledusk seem much worse than he actually is. A lot of the community paints her as a “girl boss.” Is brutally murdering 3 people and attempting to kill an uninvolved pregnant woman out of jealousy “girl boss?”
• A lot of the fandom ships are so bandwagon-ey, even if the characters involved have little positive interaction, I see people shipping them. This especially is the case for same sex ships, likely due to the lack of representation.
I just think a lot of the fandom either:
1. Never read the books OR 2. Read them a long time ago so they do not remember much from actually reading
So instead they just rely on fan animations and sites such as Twitter or Tumblr.

When Hollyleaf dies in fanart or in animations, she always dies like a dog without putting up any fight. In the book, she beat back Hawkfrost and he actually ran away before she collapsed

Definitely the Firestar one! Out of any misconception, that's probably what bothers me the most. I remember some people being confused how Sandstorm died as well.

2. Read them a long time ago so they do not remember much from actually reading The second one seems more likely, which is why I always try to provide actual quotes from the books when arguing for or against a character. There's nothing more annoying to me than someone criticizing a character just because they misremembered something or took a specific line out of context. This doesn't even just go for this fandom, but in general.

I honestly feel like the forum has much better knowledge than anywhere else, so I really like to stick here when it comes to Warriors discussions. I usually deal with stuff like that in Youtube comment sections though. Sometimes I try to correct someone on something nicely, but then they take is personal and become super defensive about it, even when I try to provide proof. It’s really annoying.

- People saying how generous Ivypool is about DovexTiger, and this comment alone usually irritates me. Like, slashing Tigerheart's face, and cutting ties with your own sister because she's seeing her boyfriend, isn't exactly "generous" behavior to me, lol. She's keeping the secret? Cool. But to be fair, she brought this upon herself in the first place and caught them together as Ivypaw back in NW, and kept getting HERSELF involved in AVoS since. She really didn't do Dovewing any favors.
- Squirrelflight being right because she "did things out of love". Do I understand her emotions, that she was hurt, and do I sympathize with her in some cases? Yes. But just because she truly believes she did the right thing, doesn't mean she didn't hurt cats. Her lie caused a lot of damage, ending a life and ruining her daughter's life. She messed up big-time here, and while I can deeply sympathize with her pain, she really didn't have the right to lie to everyone about the Three. And Leafpool is pretty guilty of this herself.
- I really don't think Nightcloud loved Crowfeather. Both mates were bad to each other, period. Nightcloud literally clawed Crowfeather's back, dragging him away from Leafpool while her own son was WAILING for them to stop fighting. It was the only time I actually felt sorry for Breezepelt. That's not love. Nightcloud is aggressive, jealous, and possessive of Crowfeather. I don't think these two worked out together because Crowfeather needed someone softer and more understanding, and Nightcloud was nothing like that. There's really no proof that Nightcloud ever loved Crowfeather; when we see them together, even SHADOWCLAN points out how Night and Crow always fight and spit a ton of insults to each other. And they're absolutely right.
- Needletail not caring about Violetshine. Just because she was a bad friend to Violetshine, doesn't mean she doesn't care about her. A friendship is not perfect, and while I'm not excusing Needletail's actions, she never really knew how to properly show affection for anyone, growing up in the toxic environment she had during her childhood. However, there were MULTIPLE times Needletail showed that she cared about Violetshine, even calling her a sister and sacrificing her life to save her. Is it called a redemption? Not really. But to me, I've always seen Needletail's sacrifice more as a cat who just really cares about someone, so much that they're giving up their own life. It's admiring to me in a way because Needletail could have chosen to kill Violetshine, she had that option so she can live, but she was so generous and gave her own life she didn't even have a chance to live for Violetshine's sake, so Violetshine can end up living her own life. And because of this sacrifice, Violetshine is happy with a family and kits and a loving mate who respects her. None of this would've happened if it wasn't for Needletail. She really showed how much she cared about her there, and I can't understand why people say she didn't.

Honorable mention: - Thistleclaw. People act like he's a soft big boi who loves Snowfur, but he's a monster and it's shown in the books. It amazes me how people blame Bluefur for all these things, taking Whitekit away from Thistle, Blue not stopping the fight between Tiger and Tiny, Blue never giving Thistle a chance, etc... like where did these ideas even come from?? There's evidence in the book that Thistleclaw is an asshole. I am sure I've read him saying he wanted bloodshed right after he almost killed Oakheart, and I STILL see people defending him, and I just- I just don't get it, really...

-Ivypool "Ohhhh she was SO brave spying!" What? No. Then they go on to say "While Dovewing, oh her dumb dopey sister didn't even help! Yeah, like one time, just before the battle" If you count that, Ivypool was just as useless as her sister. I hate it when the fandom says, Oh, Dovewing was useless, while Ivypool was so heroic, being the best spy ever! Yes, she was brave. But she was a terrible spy.
-CrowNight Some people firmly believe Nightcloud was so innocent, and she was being used when she was using Crowfeather as well.
-Breezepelt I can bet anything they don't remember OotS clearly. And they remember CT when they try to defend Breezepelt. "You see, in Crowfeather's Trial, Breezepelt is shown to have been tricked..." Nope, when the villains say he can take revenge, he says, "yes, and crowfeather's going to be my first victim!" When he attacks at the Moonpool, he says "You need to know what I feel! So be framed!" Evil dude Breezepelt, now a soft, cuddly teddy bear
-FireSand People saying Sandstorm was like hate to love immediately after Firestar rescued her. That's like, so not true.
-Needletail being a good person She's not.

Wait people actually defend Thistleclaw's actions like the Tiny incident? The only defense I've really seen for him is people defending the fact that he loved Snowfur and Whitestorm (which he did).

Yeah, I've seen a lot of arguments about people blaming Bluefur for not stopping Tigerpaw fighting Tiny, even though that was completely Thistleclaw's own responsibility. Some of these arguments just don't make any sense imo.

The "Firestar died from getting hit by a tree" misconception still makes me so MAD! But not really at the fandom, rather at the authors/editors for making his death be seemingly so unclear to the readers.

Sweetpaw's death. I think a lot of people like it purely because of how horrifying and gory being buried alive is, and how it's unique to Warriors, but the fact that it's just not true and people insist it is gets on my nerves.

Cinderpelt's leg having cat scratch marks on the hock. Also reducing Cinderpelt to girl-with-broken-leg-who-loves Firestar like those are her only character traits.

Another Firestar related one, but in the same vein as Tigerstar as in same book. Firestar did not lose his first life by getting a neck wound, Scourge more or less sliced Firestar's head open. This is-- why I can't help but headcanon Firestar with forehead scars akin to Gin from Ginga Nagaraboshi Gin and Ginga Densetsu Weed

The fact that people view Scourge as evil or 'edgy' when he was just cold-hearted.
And the Thistleclaw thing. Thistleclaw is not, and never has been, a tiny little uwu baby. He is an ambitious, predatory, bloodthirsty monster. Don't blame Bluefur, rabid Thistleclaw fans. She wasn't the one who was a creep towards Spottedpaw nor attacked Tiny.
And in art, when Hollyleaf kills Ashfur, she has this big murderous smile in most artworks and...no. That's not how it was.

Oh, I just remembered another one, and that's Lionblaze enjoying his dreams of killing Heathertail.
This is only partially true, he did indulge in the idea of killing her, but right after he wakes up? And the next time he has these nightmares? He's very clearly disturbed by them. And, well, they're dreams. It's not like he can control them anyway. And considering that Tigerstar appears in at least one of them and it's also mentioned that he keeps sneering at Lionblaze for not indulging in it further, it's not that far-fetched to assume he sent them.
It gets so bad that Lionblaze even starts to resent the prophecy for the first time in his life, and the entire reason he refuses to go to WindClan in the first place is precisely because he's afraid of hurting his former friend, even when he still thinks she betrayed him.
Another misconception I've seen regarding this is that Lionblaze literally almost killed Heathertail in the tunnels, but he never did; it's very clearly stated to have been a vision and he never even took a step towards her when she confronts him. And considering how he acted the last time they met, it's no wonder she compared him to Tigerstar. I doubt she literally knew about his vision unless she's some kind of mind reader now.

Squirrelflight is drawn as this cat who cries during the fire scene, like she's pleading to Ashfur to not kill the Three. Homever, in the books, she has a big burning anger towards Ashfur and even faces him confessing that those are not his kits.
|
|
|
Post by vectoring34 on Jun 4, 2021 16:35:50 GMT -5
I do feel a mild understanding towards the scenes with Squirrelflight in the fire. In canon, her face is hard and cold because she's trying to bluff Ashfur into thinking that because they're not her kits, she doesn't care if they die or not. However, I can see how Squirrelflight just staring while stone faced in that scene would look odd in an animation that doesn't have the appropriate dialogue and context after the fact. I suppose it depicts her internal thoughts more accurately whereas being stone faced would deceive the audience as much as it deceived Ashfur.
Still very blatantly wrong tho.
