Trey glanced down at his napping wyvern and imagined using some of the names Austin suggested. None of them fit. "No, nothing fits."
The last student finished. Trey nearly warned Austin then, but paused. Mrs. Kimberly wasn't calling for attention yet. She was collecting the clipboards, taking a moment to look over each one before grabbing the next. It gave Austin an extra couple of minutes.
In the meantime, students and their wyverns were milling around, chatting and introducing their new companions. Trey spotted Elizabeth in the crowd, but he couldn't be sure which of the three wyvern closest to her was hers. He also noticed the petite girl with the feisty fire wyvern. She, like Trey and Austin, was sitting off by herself. It looked like she was having a conversation with herself, but, on second thought, she was probably talking to her wyvern. The little orange devil was sitting beside her like a guard dog, growling at anyone who came too close.
Mrs. Kimberly finally finished reading what was on the clipboards. Trey quickly nudged Austin with his elbow.

"You could go the funny route and name him Groot," Austin mused, but he knew that that name wasn't even in the running for his friend. He rattled off a couple more, but none seemed to catch any attention from Trey. As far as names for the air wyverns, there were a couple he might try, but at the moment, there were other things to focus on.
At Trey's nudge, Austin turned off his screen and stashed his phone into his back pocket. He had been hiding his phone use in school for years now, so he was pretty quick with his actions. However, sometimes it didn't matter how fast he was if the teacher was looking his way to begin with. Luckily for him, Mrs. Kimberly was still busy with the clipboards when Trey gave him the warning. So unless she saw they beforehand, he was confident he had gone unnoticed. "Do you have any names just in general that you like?" he asked. "Regardless if they're for a wyvern or not."

Trey slowly shook his head. "No. My mind keeps throwing basic things at me, like Rocky, or the names of famous earth wyverns like Terra and Equator. And some of the names you mentioned were cool, but they just didn't sound like him." He shrugged. "If naming kids ir pets is this hard, it's a wonder people have either."
“Alright, kids," Mrs. Kimberly spoke up, walking across the room to the short platform opposite the chests. Everyone turned to face her. Trey stood up, being careful not to disturb his wyvern. He wanted the little guy to get as much sleep as possible. They still had a full afternoon ahead of them.
Once on the platform, Mrs. Kimberly continued talking. "Our next order of business is forming your teams. Does anyone know what a team is here at Dragon Academy? It's a little different than it is at other schools.”
A girl with wire-framed glasses and a pale blue wyvern on her shoulder raised her hand. “Academy teams are reflections of Guardian teams. In fact, many of the Guardian teams today were formed right here in this room.”
“Correct.” Mrs. Kimberly paced in front of them. “Who can tell me what comprises a full team?”
This time a boy with a fire wyvern answered. “Four people and their wyverns, one pair for each element.”
“Yes. And now that your wyverns have hatched, your goal will be to find and form your eight person team — because yes, your wyverns count as teammates just as much as the people do. You all need to get along — human to human, wyvern to wyvern, and human to wyvern. If you don't, it's unlikely your team will survive after graduation.”

"Have you heard of some names famous people give their kids? I'm pretty sure they get inspo off cereal boxes," Austin joked, but before he could say more, Mrs. Kimberly was calling for attention once more.
He listened to the others as they filled in the answers to the questions. Time for teams, huh? Well, that was going to be the trickiest part of the day. Part of him wanted to think that he and Trey would be in the same one, however, despite being called a friend, the two of them already shared most of their time together. Even if he wouldn't mind being on the same team, Trey might have other ideas. So, he didn't immediately turn and ask about it. Instead, he decided to ask a different question. "What if we might get along now, but later decide that the team isn't working? What happens then?" he asked after raising his hand.

Mrs. Kimberly continued. “In a few minutes, we will all head outside to join the other three First Year classes — because statistically speaking, it is unlikely that all of you will find three other people to team up with in this room alone. But first, I have a few rules."
She began pacing atop the platform. “Rule number one: do as you're told. There are ninety-six of you First Years, and therefore we now have ninety-six newly hatched wyverns running around. We are going to head outside as a class, but once in the courtyard you are free to wander and mingle with the other three classes. There will be four teachers, and our wyverns, supervising you from the edges. If any of us feel a need to interfere among you students, there is a good reason for it and you will do as you're told immediately or you will be removed from the exercise and placed in whichever team is left with an open spot.
“Rule two: stay within the boundaries provided for this exercise. Anyone who strays from the boundaries will be removed from the exercise, with exceptions. Your wyverns, for example, are exempt from this rule. However, there will be four adult wyverns maintaining the boundaries. I suggest you let them handle any wandering babies and send them back. Do not leave the boundary after your wyvern unless a nearby teacher gives you permission.
“And rule number three: there is to be no fighting among students. That includes fist fights, petty arguments, and misguided competition over which element is best. Anyone caught fighting will be removed from the exercise. Your wyverns, again, are exempt from this rule. It can be near impossible to prevent them from getting into fights or squabbles, and we as teachers expect many of these to break out throughout the duration of this exercise. If and when your wyvern ends up in a fight, just summon the nearest teacher. And keep in mind that wyverns, even babies, are very tough creatures and can handle themselves in a fight against another wyvern their age. You needn't worry about them getting hurt until they try to pick a fight with a wyvern older than themselves.
“Are there any questions or concerns regarding the rules?”

A boy — the one that tried to start a fight with Trey — raised his hand. "Who gets kicked out if there's a fight? Just the one who started the fight, right?"
"Wrong." Mrs. Kimberly gave him a stern look. "Every individual involved in the fight will be removed from the exercise. No exceptions."
The boy scowled as he lowered his gaze.
When no one else asked a question, Mrs. Kimberly continued. “Now, what's going to happen is this: those of you who can, put your wyvern on your shoulder. Those who can't, don't worry about it for now. I only ask that you walk at the rear with your little ones, so no one trips over them. Once everyone is ready, you'll walk in two rows and follow me through the school and to the courtyard. Once there, you can immediately begin mingling. Your wyverns can come off your shoulder, or they can stay there — it's up to you and them. I will remind you that you should get them comfortable being on your shoulder, because by next week all teachers will be enforcing that as a rule when you're indoors, for all student's safety, and theirs as well.
“You will all have an hour, give or take, to meet new people and form a team. Remember: there can not be any double elements. Your team needs to have one water, one air, one fire, and one earth. The only exception to this is if the numbers are uneven this year. But for now, make it your goal to have one representative for each element.
“And another thing to remember. Your teammates are not solely up to you. When considering anyone, keep your wyverns in mind. Just because you get along famously with someone does not mean your wyverns will automatically like each other. The wyverns will be a part of your team too, and their opinions matter.
“Before we head out, are there any questions? About anything, not just this exercise. It will be much harder to ask once we're outside.”

Once everyone had gathered their things, and most of the students had their wyvern on their shoulder, Mrs. Kimberly led the way to the door. "Form up in two lines, please. If your eyvern is on the ground, remember to stay in the back. We don't anyone getting stepped on or bitten."
Trey joined the flow of students. They started out as a messy jumble, but soon straighter out into two lines, with Trey somewhere in the middle o the left-hand line.
"Alright, follow me, everyone." Mrs. Kimberly opened the classroom door and stepped out into the hallway. She went right, toward the back door of the school, and her students followed.

Unlike most schools, Dragon Academy did not have a school yard in the back. Instead, there was a meadow, stretching all the way back to the four wyvern stables. Normally, this area was empty, save the occasional wyvern sunbasking. Today, over half of it had been cordoned off by easy-build rope fences. Inside were two classes of students and their newly hatched wyverns. So far, they were staying grouped with their classmates on either side of the fenced-in area. Two teachers were awaiting them at the entrance.
"About time," one said. Trey recognized the older man. Abraham Sommers. He was notoriously grumpy and short-tempered.
The other teacher, a woman in her mid-twenties, lightly smacked his arm. "We haven't been waiting that long," she scolded in the nicest tone ever. She was new to the Academy, so Trey didn't know her well.
Mrs. Kimberly stopped beside them and ushered her students into the yard. "In you go, please. All the way to the far end. No mingling outside your classmates yet. We're still waiting on one more class to arrive."
Trey followed the leaders into the yard. They walked all the way to the far side, passing the other two classes. Trey looked around at the other classes, mostly their wyverns, but stayed with his class as they grouped up at the end of the yard.
His wyvern bounced a little on his shoulder and made a little chirping sound. Trey gentled him with a hand on his back. "I know you want down, but you gotta wait just a little longer, okay?" His wyvern settled, but watched everything going on around him with bright eyes.

Austin was still caught off guard by how big the wyverns were. It was hard to believe that the little creature he had sitting on his shoulder would one day turn into a towering beast like the ones that landed around them. They looked liked something straight out of a fairy tale, and, he guessed, they probably were. Or, rather, he could see why fairy tales would have included wyverns within their pages. He stared in awe, looking between all four, studying every detail he could make out clearly, and almost didn't register that they had been told they could mingle.
As the other students bumped into him lightly to try to reach those they wished to speak to, his attention came back to the present task. No time like the present to ask. Since he had stopped by Trey, and there was still someone beside him, he didn't even bother to look in his roommate's direction before speaking. "Alright, I'm going to ask you something, but do not feel like you have to accept it. You will not hurt my feeling if you refuse," he started. "Do you want to try and make a team with me? I know we're going to be spending pretty much all year in the same classes and room together, so I understand if you don't want to add another thing to that list. Friends we may be, but I know I'm a lot. So if you had others in mind, go on and ask them. I've got a few ideas as well, so if you want to be on different teams, that'll be fine with me."
When no reply came, he glanced over to his friend. Perhaps he wasn't sure how to answer in case it hurt his feelings? However, that wasn't the case. It wasn't Trey he had beside him, but another scrawny looking boy, holding a lighter brown earth dragon looking understandably confused. "I don't think we've met before," the kid answered. "I'm pretty sure I would remember if we did.
Austin was surprised, more by the fact that he hadn't seen or noticed when Trey had left his side. Then again, he had been distracted by the wyverns. It could have been possible that he had disappeared during that time. He gave an apologetic smile. "Ah, yeah, sorry 'bout that. I thought you were someone else.
"Clearly," the other boy said.
Not sure if that was supposed to be taken as an insult or not, Austin decided to leave it at that. "Well, there may be a chance we run into each other again before the day is over. But I've got to go find my roommate," he dismissed himself. Then began to pick his way through the crowd.
Being tall had their advantages. It was easy to see over everyone, getting a somewhat better lay of the laid. However, there was no sight of Trey to be found. He could try shouting to him, but he felt as if that might be frowned upon. Besides, if Trey had slipped off without telling him, then it was possible he already had an idea of what kind of team he wished to form. So Austin didn't put too much worry into finding his roommate. He would focus on finding other elements to work with first, and then try to find Trey again before class was over. So, time to switch to Plan B.
Instead of searching for Trey, Austin scanned the crowd for red hair. There were several people here with that color, but none that were short and had a wyvern ready to attack. He walked around their class's waiting spot, searching for signs of fighting or signs that people were avoiding one spot.

The students didn't hesitate. With Mr. Sommers’ words, the four classes converged.
Trey went with them, at first just because he got caught up in the flow of bodies. But once he got free, he kept moving, for he found that so long as he was moving, his wyvern was content to stay on his shoulder. Anytime he stopped for too long, his wyvern got antsy and wanted to get down.
Trey wasn't sure what he was looking for in a team. He would have liked to ask Austin if he wanted to team up, but they had gotten separated and Trey was yet to find him in the crowd of nearly a hundred students and their ankle-biter wyverns. Elizabeth would be good, too, but if she had gotten earth as well, then she wouldn't work. Other than those two, there really wasn’t anyone Trey wanted on his team.
Others apparently wanted him, however. During his search, Trey was stopped by various students with water, air, or fire wyverns. They saw his earth wyvern sitting calmly on his shoulder (one of only a small few doing so; most earth wyverns were on the ground, picking fights, it seemed) and came up to interrogate him.
It was like a bunch of rapid-fire job interviews. The other students, sometimes one, sometimes two or even three, would approach him. They asked him a handful of questions, appraised him and his wyvern closely — some even circled him outright — and then most asked if he would join their team.
Trey's answer was always the same: “Thank you. I'll think about it.”
He would make his escape, often leaving whoever last asked rather irritated.
As he fled his most recent request, Trey came upon a trio of girls. Two had their backs to him, and there was an earth wyvern beside one and an air wyvern beside the other. He couldn't clearly see the third girl, but it sounded like the first two were asking her to join their team.
He made to move around them, but suddenly his wyvern went rigid, all his attention zeroing in on the third girl's water wyvern.
Trey stopped. “What's—” he started.
His wyvern launched himself off Trey's shoulder and ambushed the one girl's earth wyvern.
The two girls shrieked, jumping away from the fighting wyverns. “Hey!” The owner of the smaller earth wyvern was glaring at him. “Call off your beast!”
Trey could only stare, slack-jawed. His wyvern had picked a fight. It was so shockingly out of character that Trey couldn't think to do anything to stop it.
Luckily, the fight didn't last long. The smaller wyvern disengaged and booked it. Trey's wyvern chased it a bit, then stopped and stood triumphantly as the two girls ran after the fleeing earth wyvern. Then he calmly went up to the water wyvern and introduced himself, wyvern style.
Trey finally looked at the third girl. He gave a start, and everything suddenly made sense.
It was Elizabeth.

Elizabeth had waited patiently in the crowd as the gathered. Well, she gave the appearance of patience anyway. She didn't mind crowds, but that was when she had enough elbow space to be able to move freely, not to mention keep her personal space bubble free of intruders. But there was only so much room in the field, and a lot of students who needed to pair up with teams. She did her best to keep to her spot and out of everyone's way. It helped that she had Nerida and their goal ahead to help keep her occupied.
The water wyvern sat perched as gracefully on her shoulder as a newly hatched wyvern can manage. While she wasn't fond of being off the ground, she was even less fond of the idea of being stepped on. So she tolerated her sitting place while the call to begin their socialization. Elizabeth knew of a few people she would try to seek out. One being Trey, since she knew he had an earth wyvern. That, and since the two knew each other already, their ability to work as a team would probably be the best. As for the other two, she had already scoped out a couple of potential air and fire pairs. One being a girl that had been next to her during the hatching process who seemed to have a knack for caring for her air wyvern. Another one of the kids from a family friend of her mothers. While she had only spoken to him twice before herself, they had been together while choosing their eggs. She had talked with him briefly and knew there was a chance he would have either a fire or earth wyvern. So she would like to speak with him to see which one he was bonded to.
At least, that had been the plan. Like Trey, there were plenty of other students who know of her, or better yet, her family's name. While her family wasn't a big player in the Rider community, her family did have several accomplished Riders that have been recognized for their abilities and work done with their teams. It was frustrating, to say the least, to be held up in her search, but she responded as politely and eloquently as she could. She never rejected the offers, and she was sure to make a mental note of the people she thought might actually be a good choice if her go-to team didn't work out. Everyone had always been polite back, smiling, thanking her, and wishing her luck - to which she would return in kind. It was a good flow despite being a hindrance to her own search. Yet that changed when two girls crossed her path to talk.
She had seen these two around the girl's dorm room the night before, and from first impressions from afar, she hadn't really felt like speaking to them. Not because they had done anything bad, but rather their personalities just didn't seem like the type she would get along with. It reminded her a lot of the group of friends from the beginning of Legally Blonde, and while she wasn't saying they acted dumb, there was just a bit too much of that “popular” kid vibe. But like the others, she gave them the same polite treatment in hopes she would be able to be on her way. The girls, on the other hand, seemed to think her agreement to join a team was all but confirmed. As she stood there, she listened to them talk back and forth about how they could all hang out in each other's dorms, study together, and other random things. She didn't want to be rude and make a break for it, so she waited and listened. But when it was clear they weren't going to move on anytime soon, she was beginning to form an excuse to leave. Luckily, an excuse was not needed.
In the blink of an eye, the earth wyvern on one of the girls was jumped on by another. She watched in surprise as the two tussled briefly before ending in the attacked wyvern running away for safety. Both girls took off after it. It was such a strange turn of events, that it took a second before Elizabeth turned to see who the attacking wyvern belonged to. When she did, she laughed. "I see you got yourself a feisty little wyvern," she commented to Trey.

Trey shook his head to clear the remaining fog in his brain. "No, actually. He's usually very calm. That was... very unexpected." He looked down at their wyverns. His was trying to make friends. "But you know... I think it was his way of saying he wants to team up with you guys. If... that's okay?"
☆~☆~☆ Remi was overwhelmed.
Some of it was good. She bonded an egg, and from that egg hatched a wyvern who was already proving to be her closest friend.
And some of it was bad. Malaya had picked a fight in the classroom, she refused to sit on Remi's shoulder, and she was making it very hard to find a team. A couple people had approached, but each time they did, Malaya ran at them and attacked their wyvern (if it was on the ground), or bit at their ankles (if their wyverns were out of reach). Many had seen this display, and now no one was bothering to approach them.
Remi felt despair creeping up on her as she slowly made her way down the feild by the fence line. She had given up looking for a team; at the moment she wanted to get closer to the adult fire wyvern. Made it would... knock some sense into her little firecracker.
Malaya was walking beside her, keeping her little body between Remi and the crowd. She was so small that she hardly seemed capable of being any real barrier, and yet no one was coming near. It made her feel very alone.

Nerida, who had made her way to the ground a little before she had been intercepted by the pair of girls Trey had helped her escape from. Elizabeth watched as she curiously extended her neck to sniff Trey's wyvern, wary after the small fight that had happened. After a tense few seconds, she gave herself a small shake and seemed to relax. Elizabeth smiled. "That's a good sign, since I had been on my way to find you about just that," she said.
~~*~~
Just as he had thought, Austin eventually spotted the girl near the edges of the field. He had been keeping a good distance where he could see the fences and still be able to scan the crowd. On his way, he had been approached by other students, but he was on a mission. Before anyone could really speak to him, he would excuse himself and slip on by. Was it a smart move? Probably not. But he didn't want to waste time. His efforts were rewarded as he neared the corner of the field monitored by the adult fire wyvern. He spotted that familiar red hair easily since she was the only one heading away from the masses. His target in sight, he picked up his pace.
"Hey!" Austin called out, jogging over to catch up to her. In doing so, he had to move his wyvern from his shoulder to his arms, just so he wouldn't jostle or make him fall. "Wait up a sec!"

"Her name is Nerida," Elizabeth answered. As she spoke, Nerida tilted her head to one side and sniffed at the hand outstretched towards her. Her reaction to his was neither one of approval or disgust, which could be taken as a good sign. She merely gave herself another shake and eyed Trey with clear, pale green eyes.

"Hey, hey, hey, now!" Austin said, having to hop and almost dance around the fire wyvern as she rushed him. The last thing he wanted to do was step on her as he slowed. "I'm a friend, I promise. Or would like to be at least." Trying not to do anything to anger the little wyvern, he glanced over towards Remi. "Tell her! We know each other, remember? "I've kind of had the names prepared before getting here," Elizabeth said with a small laugh. "I had one for each element, just in case, but I chose Nerida because it means 'sea nymph.' I figured that would be a very close comparison for any water wyvern. I'm just glad that she liked it. I didn't have a back up."

Austin, even though he was being cautious of the wyvern, didn't seemed bothered by her. In fact, he was grinning. "Why to talk to you, of course!" he responded cheerfully. But you seem like a really cool person, and I tend to annoy the ones I make friends with more than anybody else."

"I can help think of some if we have time before class is over," Elizabeth offered. "As for others, there was a girl beside me in class that showed real skill in caring for her wyvern when it hatched. I believe she got an air wyvern. Then a very distant family friend believed he was going to get either an earth or fire wyvern. If he has earth, clearly it won't be a go, but never hurts to find out. Who all were you thinking of?"
~~*~~
"About being on a team," Austin said, matter-of-factly. It was at this point when his wyvern renewed his efforts to get down. While he knew that might not be a good idea, if she agreed to be on a team with him, their wyverns would have to make friends eventually. So, he bent over enough to let his wyvern drop to the ground safely.
