What ways can the Erin Hunter group go really dark on this series. Like how WOF had that one scene of a character holding a disembodied head. Doesn’t have to be as dark as that, but they go into detail on something, like a cat being put to sleep, what do you guys think?

The Broken Code has dark elements in it (mostly all about Ashfur). Forcing Squirrelflight to fight Bramblestar, her mate, whilst said mate is under Ashfur's control, was pretty dark.

I think Warriors is generally darker than WoF. Even when all of dragonkind was at war, they seem to only rarely kill each other and they never use fire breath on each other. Compare to Warriors where everyone is ripping out throats and slashing each other's eyes. The cats are far more violent per capita.

I guess this series is already so violent with cats disemboweling each other and ripping their eyes out, something I've always wanted in this series to make it more dark without upping the violence is with its themes. Like, seriously, I love psychological horror and heavy topics and I just wish they were more introduced in this already grim book series.

Needletail's entire life. She grew up in a toxic environment with cats who never really cared or respected her, and it makes me sad she feels more at home with The Kin than her Clan she was born in, only to find out they were a bunch of killers who didn't care about anyone but themselves. Needletail didn't even get a chance to live a life; she went through many hardships, and the only time she did the right thing, she ended up paying her life for it. Never having the chance to have kits with a mate, or live the life as a real warrior. Needletail grew up with terrible cats and only had Violetshine as her only true friend. Her story is probably more on the emotional side than dark, but I totally understand why she won't change immediately like some of her haters want her to, and why she turned out the way she did. She's probably one of the most tragic characters in the entire series, and I can't entirely blame her for acting the way she does with others, even if she's wrong, I understand her.

I think that the Warriors series is dark enough considering some of the points others have already made on this thread but cats getting drowned by others, even if it had only been implied, definitely was disturbing for books originally aimed at children/teens.

This scene in Tree's Roots where Stream gets struck by lightning. It's especially haunting when you remember how terrified Stream was leading up to this moment e__e
He turned to call encouragement. “It’s not too—” The world lit up bright white, with a simultaneous boom of thunder. His fur stood on end, and he could smell the sharp scent of lightning. Then the world was dark again. Earth’s ears were ringing. Something fell past him in the darkness, sliding and rolling. Just a rock, Earth told himself, but his stomach twisted into a knot. Blundering forward, his paws struck something soft and warm. “Stream?” Earth asked, bending to nose at the huddled shape. It was Stream, but with something strange beneath his scent. His body was hot as fire. His soft fur was standing on end. Earth stiffened, his stomach heavy with dread. Stream smelled like burning. He smelled like fire and pain. Earth gasped and staggered back a step, mud squelching beneath his paws. Stream was dead.

does cats being buried until they are unable to move any of their limbs at all with their heads remaining the only things exposed/visible count as dark? Wait, didn't you already ask this? >.>

I would like a bit more of an exploration on how death and grief affect the living characters, honestly. Like yeah, a lot of cats die in the books, but only rarely does it truly take a toll on the protagonist.

Sootfur's death was pretty dark. He tried to get to the top of a secret exit to seek shelter, then a badger comes in and crushes his spine, also breaking his legs. He drags himself with paralyzed legs to the secret exit with Squirrelflight, and when he was halfway up, a badger crashed through the brambles and grabbed him, tearing his throat open and killing him. That's a dsiturbing way to go.

does cats being buried until they are unable to move any of their limbs at all with their heads remaining the only things exposed/visible count as dark? Don't really understand why you deleted your original post and then reposted the same thing. People may or may not have an answer to your question, but if they do, they'll respond. But... for a simple answer to this: yes. If the cat is alive, it's probably darker than them being deceased. However, there's a fine line between what one person and another finds something like your example to be "dark."
