"W-w-w...what...?" Meadowthorn looked in horror at the medicine cat. It felt like her heart had stopped. No...this-this couldn't be true! This was a nightmare! It had to be! The golden tabby she-cat opened her mouth to reply but nothing came out. Her throat seemed to not be working as something rose in her to stop her from talking. Her claws dug into the ground as the full force of the medicine cat's words smacked into her. Their beloved leader - her sister - was dead. Died after kitting. How? How could this have happened?! She had been so strong! And nothing in her pregnancy had seemed unusual or would have caused problems further on. Still, just by the immensely sorrowful look on the medicine cat's face, she knew it was true. Rosestar was gone, leaving a grand legacy and her kits behind...
Meadowthorn finally managed to swallow as she looked around the camp. Other curious heads were poking out from dens, yet no one approached, sensing the uneasy, fear, and intense pain radiating from the she-cat. Meadowthorn's ears twitched as she picked up the sound of harsh coughing. It was only a quick glance at the medicine cat's den reminded her that the deputy was - her sister's mate - was out of commission. The sickness, in all its cruelty, had infected so many of their cats, including the soon-to-be leader. The deputy wasn't even conscious right now. The fever, coughing, and dizziness had left the cats infected by it unable to be coherent after a while. The poor medicine cats had been trying to find the right mixture of herbs and spices to cure them. As it was, nothing seemed to work. And sadly enough, someone had already died. The warrior, Hazelleaf, had been young and strong. StarClan had claimed her far too quickly. Now, the deputy was approaching the final stages that Hazelleaf had show: shortness of breath, swollen eyes, and shivers. It was a terrible thing. And if a cure wasn't found soon, most likely, the tom would die. Only he would not be leaving the clan leaderless, but his kits orphans.
Meadowthorn looked around the camp, unable to fully process what to do. Obviously, the deputy could not make the trip to StarClan to receive his nine-lives. He could barely drink water right now! What was next to do? Have a senior warrior take up the mantle? But they weren't the deputy! Maybe StarClan would send them a sign? But that could take too much time! Who would lead the clan until then? A senior warrior? The medicine cats?! The elders?!?
A small meow interrupted Meadowthorn's thoughts. She could see others begin to move from the dens, wondering what was going on. Hope and fear danced across all faces, all looking at her for...guidance? Assurance? The golden she-cat looked back at the medicine cat as she looked at the younger sister of the fallen leader with unease, try rapidly - and failing - to ground herself again. "Meadowthorn...what will happen now?" |

► Rosestar was not sick, she is expecting kits!
► More cats fall ill with Hazelleaf being the first victim to succumb to it.
► Rosestar died while kitting, leaving the clan leaderless and her three kits alone. She was too young to have died and lost all of her lives already! Is the sickness that bad? |

Meadowthorn watched with grief as cats slowly came forward to pay their respects. Rosestar's leadership was far, far too short. She had been loved by the whole clan and well respected by others. She had brought them out of possible war with StoneClan and helped them through a particularly harsh leaf-bare. When the sickness had started, Rosestar had been hope for them. She swore that she knew StarClan would help them and the clan would survive. Her announcement of kits had brought new hope for them. Now, everything seemed dark.
Larkfeather padded forward to groom a patch of fur on Rosestar's shoulder with such gentleness, it was like a mother greeting her kit for the first time.
Dustyfoot followed with a soft touch to the leader's forehead.
Fawnlight was followed by a few apprentices as they nuzzled the she-cat for the last time.
Bumblefern left the leader's side to head into the nursery with Runningflower. Her gently touched her ear before nuzzling her cheek. We will take care of your kit, Rosestar. I promise.
Berrybush touched Petalberry gently on the shoulder and joined Adderspring and Thistlefrost. Her leg might have stopped her for being able to be a warrior for longer than she should have, but it wouldn't stop her from carrying out her leader. The she-cat padded behind them, supporting the back half of Rosestar.

(Yeah. I have been really busy. My mother had a heart attack and has been in and out of the hospital recently, I started a new job but continued to work my other job as well. I've just been very burned out.)
